New Unreleased Canon Lenses Show Up For Certification (but what are they?)

Two new and yet unreleased Canon lenses have been spotted at a certification authority. We wonder what lenses are coming.

Spotted by Nokishita, the two lenses with SKUs 4858C005 and 5564C005 (image on top) are mentioned along with the recently released RF 5.2mm f/2.8L Dual Fisheye lens. We think these are two more RF mount lenses but are not sure what lenses. One might be an entry level lens. For all we know the two lenses might well be the RF 18-45mm f / 4-5.6 IS STM and “RF 24mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro, both should be relatively affordable lenses.

These Might Be The Canon EOS R5c Specifications

Remember the Canon EOS R5c? It’s Canon’s rumored EOS R camera for Cinema (hence the “c”). New bits emerged from the interweb of rumor mills.

Canon Rumors reports with high confidentiality a set of possible Canon EOS R5c specifications. Without further ado, here they are:

  • Canon Log 3
  • Canon Log 2 is still being discussed
  • Unlimited 8K30P recording in Cinema RAW Light. XF-AVC and MP4
  • Timecode in/out
  • The same multipurpose hot shoe as the EOS R3. Which will work with accessories such as the Tascam XLR module.
  • Active cooling
  • 3/8″ or 1/4″ mounting point on the EVF for a top handle that won’t interfere with the hot shoe.
  • Full-size HDMI Port
  • The LCD has been moved further back to accommodate the cooling fan. So this likely means that it won’t recess into the body like the Canon EOS R5.

“Active cooling” sounds interesting. Might make it bulkier, and allow for long recording times with 4K and 8K. Announcement of the Canon EOS R5c is expected in 2022. The moniker comes from the community and not from Canon.

Here is a new Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM review. The RF 16mm is an interesting and affordable lens for the EOS R system.

At a glance:

  • RF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Aperture Range: f/2.8 to f/22
  • One Aspherical Element
  • Super Spectra Coating
  • STM Stepping AF Motor
  • Customizable Control Ring
  • Rounded 7-Blade Diaphragm

Photography Blog posted their Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM review. They gave a 4.5/5 and “Highly Recommended” rating. From their conclusion:

[…] the Canon RF 16mm F2.8 STM is a very cheap and very cheerful ultra-wide-angle prime lens that delivers sharp images in the centre, fast and reliable auto-focusing, usefully close shooting distance, and surprisingly good build quality, all housed inside a tiny, super-lightweight design.

It delivers excellent sharpness at the centre of the frame throughout most of its aperture range, even performing very well when shooting wide-open at f/2.8. It’s a different story at the edges of the image, though, which are much softer, with best results obtained from f/5.6-11.

A Few More Bits About The Rumored Canon EOS R1

Shortly after we got the Canon EOS R1 rumor there was more stuff that surfaced from the interweb of rumor mills.

We were told that the Canon EOS R1 might get released in Q3 2022, and that it will “let all competitors behind” (whatever that means). Over there at Canon Rumors they got a few more bits immediately after we posted our rumor. Here are the new bits:

  • Global shutter? Despite being on the wishlist of many, it seems once more it was a hoax. No global shutter on the EOS R1.
  • Where is the EOS R1 positioned? According to a source, the R1 is “A jack of all trades, and a master of none. Except that it will be a master of everything.” (whatever that means(
  • Is the EOS R1 ready? Not yet, apparently. It seems some of the EOS R3 feedback will go into the EOS R1
  • How many megapixel will it have? More than the EOS R3 but no one knows yet how many. Might well be above the 45MP of the EOS R5.
  • Video? Most likely it will have 8K video on board
  • What about the price? Moe than the EOS R3 but less than $10,000.

As you can see, no real beef on the fire here. Sound more like educated speculation than specification to us. Time will tell.

Canon EOS R1 To Be Released In Q3 2022, Will Let “all competitors behind”

A new, fresh rumor about the Canon EOS R1, a not yet released Canon mirrorless camera.

According to our source, the Canon EOS R1 might be released around Q3 2022. Not much has been told to us about the specifications. Just that the Canon EOS R1 will incorporate technology that will “let all competitors behind“. Whatever that means.

The Canon EOS R1 (moniker comes from the web, not official Canon name) will be Canon’s flagship full frame mirrorless camera. The next step after the already game changing EOS R3. No doubt left here that the EOS R1 will be another game changer in the industry.
