Nikon might be set to launch a full frame mirrorless camera with a price below $1,000.

That’s what Japanese news site Nikkei reports (machine translated):

Nikon will introduce a new mid-price mirrorless camera product in fiscal 2019. The same interchangeable lens can be used in the product that corresponds to a sister model such as the high-end model “Z7” launched by the company in the autumn of 2006. It is expected that the price will be in the 100,000 yen range, which is easier for the general consumer to pick up than the leading 200,000 to 400,000 yen model. The aim is to develop the demand of users other than existing enthusiasts.

100,000 Yen are roughly $900. That would be a killer price for a full frame mirrorless camera. The only real entry-level FF mirrorless camera currently on the market, the Canon EOS RP, is priced $1,299.

DxOMark tested the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L lens for the EOS R mirrorless system.

The Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L is a remarkable lens, made to showcase the capabilities of the RF mount. DxOMark gave it a score of 38. This score puts the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L among the top five 50mm lenses in DxOMark’s rating. However, it’s clearly below the score of lenses that costs much less, e.g. the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM and the Zeiss Milvus 50mm f/1.4 (both not f/1.2).

From DxOMark‘s conclusion:

There isn’t a huge pool of f/1.2 50mm lens to compare the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM against, and most of its competitors have a maximum aperture of f/1.4 or f/1.8. If optimum image quality is your major concern, then the Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM A makes for a better choice, although it can’t be mounted directly on Canon’s mirrorless cameras. However, if you need the extra 1/3-stop of light, then the RF lens makes a good solid proposition that is a step up from the older Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM.

What Is Value Angle And Why Does Fujifilm Think Canon Has The Edge With The EOS M System

Ever heard about the value angle?

Without diving into too much engineering stuff, the value angle is a computed parameter that has a strong influence on the design of a camera mount and hence of the whole system. But there is more. It also gives a glance about what can be made lens design wise and how far optical engineers can push the design. In one word: it expresses the potentiality of a camera system.

The idea behind it is that a larger value is generally speaking more advantageous and that it allows the design of lenses that provide a particularly high image quality. Oh, and it’s a concept invented by Fujifilm.

The formula for calculating the value angle is: 

ValueAngle = 2 × arctan ((2 × flange distance) / (mount diameter – sensor diagonal)) 

In a recent Fujifilm summit, the company introduced the concept of value angle to discuss the X System. And it turns out Canon has a real winner here with the EOS M system. If you have a look at the table below, you’ll see Canon’s EOS M mount ranks first when it comes to this very parameter, i.e. it has the most flexible lens mount (please note: “Kleinbild” means “full frame”).

The Canon EOS M50 and EOS M100 are best sellers in Japan, especially the former.

No surprise that latest BCNRetail data for May 2019 confirm once more that Canon is doing very good in the APS-C mirrorless market, and not just in Japan.

The EOS M50 has a market share of 20.5% (most sold), the Sony a6400 has 11.5% (second most sold), and the EOS M100 has 7.8% (third ranked).
