Canon RF 28-70mm F/2L DxOMarked (impressive optical performance)

Canon RF 28-70mm F/2L Review Rf Mount Canon Eos R

RF 28-70mm F/2L at a glance:

  • RF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Aperture Range: f/2 to f/22
  • Ultra-Low Dispersion Elements
  • Ring-Type Ultrasonic Motor AF System
  • Customizable Control Ring
  • Rounded 9-Blade Diaphragm

DxOMark posted their review and test results for the Canon RF 28-70mm F/2L, a highly regarded lens for the EOS R system.

DxOMark gave the RF 28-70mm F/2L a score of 33, and see it performing better than the amazing Canon EF 24-70mm F2.8L II.

From the conclusion:

With such a fast F2.0 maximum aperture at all focal lengths, the new Canon RF zoom certainly feels like it’s showcasing the potential of switching to the new RF mount. Given the possibilities for low-light shooting, when switching between primes isn’t ideal, a lens like this is sorely tempting. At a dollar shy of $3,000, though, it is a pricey proposition. Still, it has very impressive optical performance, and when viewed overall, it’s even a slightly better performer than the highly-regarded Canon EF 24-70mm F2.8L II USM. Its appeal is somewhat niche, but if you need a lens like this, there isn’t anything else on the market quite like it.

Next f/2 Zoom For The Canon EOS R System Might Be The RF 16-28mm f/2L

Canon RF 28-70mm F/2L Review Rf Mount Canon Eos R

Last week a rumor surfaced suggesting Canon is working on a f/2 zoom lens for the Canon EOS R system.

A few days later another rumor surfaced suggesting it might be a RF 16-28mm f/2L lens that Canon is working on. This focal length would nicely complement the already released RF 28-70mm f/2L lens.

Take it with grain of salt, the Internet is flooded with low reliability EOS R rumors. And stay tuned for more intel.

Canon Working On Another f/2 Zoom Lens For The Canon EOS R System?

Canon Eos R Price

Another low ranked rumor surfaced form the web.

Canon might be working (even “hard working”) on another zoom lens with f/2 for the EOS R system. There is already an f/2 soon lens for the EOS R system, the remarkable Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L.

No hints on the focal length of the rumored lens. Actually we are still waiting for Canon to release a series of EOS R lenses they have already announced, among them what is usually referred as the “holy trinity” of lenses: RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS, RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS and RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS.

Please take this with a solid grain of salt. We (and it seems others) are flooded with unreliable EOS R related rumors. It’s the hype of the moment.

Stay tuned.

Canon RF 35mm f1.8 IS STM Macro Lens Review (highly versatile lens, DPReview)

Canon RF 35mm F1.8 IS STM

Canon RF 35mm f1.8 IS STM at a glance;

  • RF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Aperture Range: f/1.8 to f/22
  • Super Spectra Coating
  • STM Stepping AF Motor
  • 1:2 Max. Magnification, 6.7″ Min. Focus
  • Optical Image Stabilizer
  • Customizable Control Ring
  • Rounded 9-Blade Diaphragm

DPReview posted their full review of the Canon RF 35mm f1.8 IS STM Macro lens for the Canon EOS R full frame mirrorless system. They gave it a score of 86%.

From their conclusion:

This will no doubt be an obvious walk-around lens for many EOS R-series users, at least for the time being while the RF lens range is still growing. With a classically popular focal length, a respectably wide maximum aperture, image stabilization and close-focusing capabilities, it clearly has broad ambitions and many useful applications.

[…]

The [Canon RF 35mm f1.8 IS STM Macro] has been put together well and handles nicely, and you soon start to appreciate the presence of the Control Ring as you use it to make small tweaks while shooting. The focusing system isn’t the most discreet but it is fast, and it works very well during video shooting

The [Canon RF 35mm f1.8 IS STM Macro] is certainly capable of delivering nicely sharp images too, and while vignetting, curvilinear distortion and lateral chromatic aberration are all visible to some extent, the worst of these can be banished quite easily through the camera-based corrections. LoCA is present at wider apertures and can be visible in out-of-focus areas, but it’s most prominent in out-of-focus high contrast regions, where you may see purple and green fringing. That, and the ‘catseye’ bokeh that can result when shooting at wider apertures might be a concern for those who intend to use the lens frequently in this way. Heavily defocused areas and more natural backgrounds, however, are generally rendered very pleasingly.
