Can Panasonic DFD (Depth from Defocus) Hold Up To Canon Dual Pixel Autofocus?

Dual Pixel Af Panasonic Dfd

Panasonic’s proprietary autofocusing technology, Panasonic DFD (Depth from Defocus), is not everyone’s darling.

Panasonic DFD is a technology that calculates the direction and the amount to move the focus lens at a single movement by predicting it with 2 images that have different depth of field (more here).

Canon’s Dual Pixel AF is an established technology and the reference in the industry. The next iteration of this autofocusing technology has already by filed as patent application.

The video below by DPReview TV, Chris and Jordan discuss Panasonic DFD and how it compares to Canon Dual Pixel AF.

Bold Statement: Canon, Nikon and Panasonic Mirrorless Systems Are Flops (Northrup)

Mirrorless

Tony & Chelsea Northrup posted a 28 minutes video with a pretty bold statement: Canon’s and Nikon’s and Panasonic’s mirrorless systems are dead end, flops, failures.

According to Northrups, Sony E-mount and Fuji X-mount are the most “future proof” mounts. The statements are based on Amazon US data and a lot of more or less educated guessing.

Northrup’s predictions give Canon and Nikon respectively 28.8% and 12.4% market share in the full frame mirrorless market and 12.8% for both Canon and Nikon in 2022.

There are a lot of questionable affirmations in the video below. Please comment in a polite way (if you want to comment).

The Evolution Of Autofocus By Comparing Canon EOS R, Sony a7 III and Panasonic G9 Technology

Autofocus

We all know Canon has the best on sensor AF, Dual Pixel AF. But there are other AF technologies.

The video below by Gerald Undone compares the technology behind autofocus systems like Canon’s Dual Pixel AF in the new EOS R, the hybrid phase-detection in the Sony a7 III, and the Depth from Defocus Contrast Detection found in the Panasonic Lumix G9. Enjoy.
