More possible Canon PowerShot announcements ahead of Photokina 2018 [CW2]

canon rumors canon full frame mirrorless

We got some more bits about Canon’s agenda for Photokina 2018, along with the rumor about the Canon EOS M5 Mark II.

Canon might announce also two PowerShot cameras around September 2018.

  • A premium, travel oriented PowerShot SX740, featuring a 40x zoom, raw file format and GPS
  • The PowerShot G7X III, with a new 1″ sensor manufactured by Canon, Dual Pixel AF, 4K, and again GPS

We feel more confident about the Canon EOS M5 Mark II rumor than on this. Time will tell.

Stay tuned.

Canon is going to attend Photokina 2018

Photokina 2018

Last week a rumor suggesting Canon (and other brands) may not be present at Photokina 2018 surfaced on the web. The rumor started because Elinchrom announced they would skip Photokina 2018.

It turned out to be wrong. Today the Photokina exhibition published a press release where they list a bunch of brands with already secured stands, among them is Canon.

Press release:

photokina 2018: high exhibitor demand

Five months prior to the start of the 35th edition of photokina on 26 September 2018, the organisers are expecting every single exhibitor space in the halls in Cologne to be filled. Leading companies of the industry like Arri, Canon, Cewe, DJI, Epson, Fujifilm, Kodak Alaris, Leica, Manfrotto, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Profoto, Sigma, Sony, Tamron and Zeiss have already secured their stands at the coming event. The application phase is also moving full speed ahead for photokina 2019.

Canon may pull out of Photokina 2018, or just wait for the next one

Photokina 2018

Over at DIYPhotography they got word that some big brands, including Canon, Elinchrom and Profit, may pull out of Photokina 2018.

So far only Elinchrom has released a statement:

ELINCHROM TAKE A BREATHER FROM PHOTOKINA.

It goes without saying that the photo industry is going through major changes; photographer’s habits and expectations are evolving so rapidly.

In order to respond to this new environment, the photokina international exhibition has repositioned itself as an annual event to be held over 4 days in September this year, and then annually each May from 2019.

“After close to 30 successive participations we feel this is a transitional year for photokina and this break will help Elinchrom to analyse and refocus on what is really important for our customers in the coming years.” said Simon Whittle, CEO of Elinchrom.

The launch of the ground-breaking ELB 1200 location stills and video light and the ELB 500 TTL is proof of Elinchrom’s commitment to their customers.

Full information on the complete Elinchrom range remains accessible on-line and locally from Elinchrom’s Distributor and Retail network, throughout the year.

Keep in mind that there will be another Photokina in May 2019, so it’s possible the mentioned companies are just adjusting to the new schedule. Canon hasn’t confirmed or denied anything so far, and it’s still a rumor and hence may never happen.

Photokina, world’s leading event for photo, video and imaging will take place every year from now on

Photokina
If you are into photography you likely know Photokina, the world’s leading event for everything related to photography, video and imaging.

As for now, Photokina was an event occuring every two years. Starting from this year, Photokina will take place every year.

photokina will take place annually as of 2018. It will in future thus optimally reflect the fast-paced nature and the ever briefer innovation cycles of an increasingly digitalised industry. As of 2019 the trade fair will also have a new date in May. In addition to innovations from the core areas of the imaging workflow, the entire range of products, applications and services of relevance for imaging shall in future be presented in Cologne. With these changes, the transformation process begun in 2016 shall be consistently continued: under the umbrella of “Imaging Unlimited”, photokina last year inspired both exhibitors and visitors and accessed new target groups for the industry.

“The digital transformation of the imaging industry is advancing, and thus opening up new perspectives and value creation potential. The new date and the annual cycle should in future make photokina even more attractive to all providers of the imaging ecosystem. In this way, we show the specialised trade, the media and our users an even broader bandwidth of state-of-the-art products, applications and services in Cologne which especially suits the young imaging culture,” Rainer Führes, chairman of the board of the photography industry association (PIV) is pleased to state.
