Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 M IS STM to be announced in April

canon rumors

New tidbits about the prime lens for APS-C DSLRs Canon is rumored to announce on April 5. It may be the Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 M IS STM.

As you can see it’s not the wide angle lens that was suggested until a few days ago. And there is this “M” in the moniker. Most likely the M stays for macro but we do not know for sure so far.

It’s a pity it’s not a wide angle lens. Hopefully it’s really a macro, possibly with built-in LED lights like on the EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM.

Hopefully it will be a macro lens, otherwise I don’t see much point. There’s already the excellent 40mm f2.8 STM, and whilst this is an EF full frame lens it works perfectly well on crop bodies. In other words not that different in focal length with the same maximum aperture. If it’s a macro lens I will eventually add it to the 5 macro lenses I already have for my Canon system (you can never have enough macro lenses, and a 35mm macro lens has its uses).

Yes, hope for the same. Do not get the need of a 35mm on APS-C. A wide angle would have made more sense imo.

Where is the rumored wide angle prime for Canon crop??

  • Fred

You’re mistaken. It’s not a lens for the EOS M system.

  • CW Steve

It’s an EF-S lens, for Canon crop sensor (APS-C) DSLRs.

A ~30mm f/2.0 or 1.8 would make perfect sense for the crop sensor bodies, giving then a fastish normal prime option. Even Nikon managed to do this for their DX bodies.

56mm, yeah people are clamoring for that focal length.

It’s a curious naming. I have no idea about what this lens is.

35mm f2.8 STM IS M .. M can’t be for macro. Canon calls their macros, “Macro” so why would they confuse the issue, especially with a 60mm 2.8 USM Macro already in existence.
