A Canon surprise coming at NAB 2016 (working 8K camera and 8K displays)

C500

In a short interview by the NAB Show, Tim Smith, Senior Advisor, Film and TV Production at Canon, when asked what we can expect Canon to showcase at NAB 2016, said:

We will be showing not only our existing product line, with a few surprises, but we will also be showing working 8K cameras and 8K displays that look into the future of production.

The 8K camera will most likely be the replacement for the EOS C500, the EOS C500 Mark II we wrote about it in the past. When asked what he thinks will be trending at NAB, Tim Smith said:

I think you will be seeing some low-cost high-quality offerings that open up many possibilities for both big-and small-budget productions.

NAB 2016 is just 3 weeks away. Stay tuned…

Canon mirrorless camera coming with 4K? [CW3]

Full Frame Mirrorless

After having ridiculed each and any rumor we posted about Canon’s plans with 4K technology, some of the rumor sites now started to post one Canon 4K rumor after the other. Funny.

The latest bits suggest Canon will release a prosumer mirrorless camera with 4K on board. The rumor is a bit confusing since it refers to three different models, at least one featuring 4K. Canon might announce two mirrorless cameras with an APS-C sensor (already rumoured), and one with a full-frame sensor (leaked first here one CW; see here too). A Canon mirrorless camera with fixed lens is also rumoured (something like the Leica Q and Sony RX1 R).

Canon Watch’s take: with Canon already investing in 8K technology, and given the ubiquity of 4K from smartphones to cameras, it is a safe bet to assume that a Canon full-frame mirrorless camera to be announced in 2016 will indeed have 4K on board. Canon itself talked about their mirrorless plans in a recent interview, and then in another interview.

Beefed up Canon EOS 6D Mark II instead of Canon EOS 5D Mark IV? [CW1]

Eos 6d Mark Ii

I got an EOS 6D Mark II rumor I want to post in its completeness. While I do not think this rumor is reliable, I decided to post it for two reasons: 1) it’s a scenario that’s at least possible, and 2) it will make the rounds sooner or later. The rumor (slightly modified from the original):

Canon is going to make some changes to its full-frame line-up. The replacement for EOS 5D Mark III is going to be the same camera which will replace the EOS 6D, and its name will be EOS 6D Mark II. That’s right, there won’t be an EOS 5D Mark IV, and the EOS 6D Mark II will be upgraded in its market position compared to the EOS 6D but at the same time downgraded compared to the EOS 5D Mark III. I personally find it odd that Canon took this decision and I haven’t been told why it did so. My guess is that this would be a reasonable decision if and only if a lower-cost model derived from the EOS 1D line hit the streets as a replacement or upgrade to the EOS 5D Mark III. I have no information regarding the EOS 6D Mark II specifications except that a dual-pixel autofocus sensor is under last-stage testing at Canon, but I’ve no idea whether it will make it in the end product, this will depend on the testers’ feedback. However, a non-DPAF sensor is also in last-stage testing, so it cannot be said at the moment whether the EOS 6D Mark II will feature DPAF or not. The engineering team had significant difficulty incorporating DPAF capability on the full-frame sensor within the cost constraints they were told to honor, so it’s not guaranteed that the result will pass the requirements if the “shortcuts” taken by the engineers to stay within the cost constraints didn’t work. I also learn through another less-trustful but still believable channel that the price point of the EOS 6D Mark II will stay at the same level as that of the EOS 6D.

No EOS 5D Mark IV (all rumors) but a beefed up EOS 6D Mark II (all rumors) instead? What do you think?

Canon EOS 5Dx coming with 4K recording? [CW4/CW3]

Eos 5d Mark Iv

Another suggestion of 4K coming to the EOS 5D Mark III replacement. As a reminder: we were the first to leak it (in July 2014), and we got another pertinent suggestion a month ago.

The interesting thing with this rumor: it comes from an unexpected site. It’s online retailer DigitalRev on their blog to post the latest suggestion about the EOS 5D Mark III replacement. They also suggest the moniker EOS 5Dx, something we leaked last year. To sum up what they posted:

  • 4K will be on board
  • A new Auto-Focus system based on 1D X Mark II is suggested

And then:

The new 5D will also include Canon Log and Wide DR gamut, allowing the camera to capture a much wider dynamic range and opening up more possibilities in post. The camera will reportedly include both a CFast card slot and an SD card slot, presumably to accommodate 4K video.

The 5DX is already in testing with a select number of photographers, and should be ready for production once any software bugs have been ironed out.

Things are getting interesting, and all of our EOS 5D Mark IV rumors are hitting the web again. As I wrote many times, 4K on the EOS 5D Mark III replacement is no longer a matter of speculation but a matter of common sense. Would it be possible for Canon to announce such a camera without 4K on board? Don’t think so.

I rate the rumor about 4K on the EOS 5D Mark IV with CW4, the suggestion about the moniker EOS 5Dx as CW3.

Yet another mention of 4K on the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV

Eos 5d Mark Iv

We were the first to leak it (in July 2014), and we got another pertinent suggestion a month ago. While we have never been quoted by any of the big rumor sites, it appears some of those sites are now also starting to suggest the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV (or whatever it will be named) might feature 4K video recording.

As I wrote in the past, 4K on the EOS 5D Mark III replacement has become matter of common sense. It is hard to imagine Canon can afford to announce the fourth iteration of their high popular EOS 5D line-up without featuring 4K.

The announcement of the EOS 5D Mark IV is still a matter of speculation. Somewhere in Summer or late Summer/Fall is likely. Stay tuned…
