We know that Canon will announce the EOS 5Ds and EOS 5Ds R next week – but what’s going on with the EOS 5D Mark IV?
Northlight Images says they have been told that the EOS 5D Mark IV will be announced in August. The EOS 5D Mark IV is said to come with improved video and still performance and features, and with just a modest increase in resolution.
As we reported first, the EOS 5D Mark IV will most probably have 4k video recording. This will be a DSLR oriented to the sport, action and event photographers. I am sure the EOS 5D Mark IV will push Canon already exceptional low-light performance to new boundaries.
About our rumor rating:
CW1 – probably fake rumor, not reliable
CW2 – rumor from an unknown/new source, but otherwise at least a plausible rumor
CW3 – a 50% chance to be real, coming from a known source, or from new source with good insight in Canon’s business
CW4 – rumor from a known source that was right in the past
I got some specs (thanks) for a new Powershot camera, the Powershot G3 X (or G1 X Mark III). I can not yet confirm it is the anticipated large sensor Powershot. Given the high ISOs it may well be. There is no “G2 X”, and both the PowerShot G1 X and PowerShot G1 X Mark II had an 1.5″ sensor. In any case, this is one of the new Powershot cameras Canon will announce next week.
The specifications:
Powershot G1 X Mark III (or maybe G3 X)
20.2mp 1 inch back illuminated cmos
Wi-fi
NFC
5 fps
f/2.8-f5.6. 25x zoom. 28-600mm zoom (35 equiv.)
3.2 inch touch screen
ISO 12800 expand to 25600
Full HD. 59.94 fps

UPDATE
I got some more tidbits about the specs (thanks). Here is the new specification list (lines in bold are the new specs):
50.6MP full-size CMOS sensor (53MP total count)
5DS R is without low-pass filter
Magnesium alloy body
Dust and water sealed
Dual processor DIGIC6
Regular sensitivity ISO 100-6400, expand to 12800
Continuous shooting 5 frames / sec.
High precision 61-point AF, 41 cross type
EOS iTR AF
150,000 pixel RGB + IR photometry sensor
Added “fine detail” to the Picture Style
1.3x and 1.6x crop shooting mode
Customizable “Quick Control Screen”
Time-lapse movie
Anti-flicker
Interval Timer
Bulb timer
No headphone terminal
No DAF
No HDMI output for video (clean out). Not to compete with 5D III other video features are same.
The source also stated that the sensor is made by Canon using a new CMOS manufacturing process. I rate the added specs as CW3. The new specs (if real) confirm that these are DSLRs not oriented to the videographers.
ORIGINAL POST
Image and specs of the upcoming Canon 5Ds and EOS 5Ds R leaked at digicame-info. Two models will be announced next week, the EOS 5Ds and the EOS 5Ds R. Yesss, it’s a full-frame, high resolution Canon DSLR! :-)
The specs look impressing:
50.6MP full-size CMOS sensor
5DS R is without low-pass filter
Magnesium alloy body
Dust and water sealed
Dual processor DIGIC6
Regular sensitivity ISO 100-6400
Continuous shooting 5 frames / sec.

There is no mention of Dual Pixel AF. Hence I think these cameras are not oriented to the videographers crowd. Moreover, looking at the so far leaked specs these appear to be DSLRs heavily oriented to stills photography. Another surprise is the relatively small ISO range, topping at ISO 6400, which makes me think that Canon wanted to keep sensor noise low. The pixel density of a full-frame 50MP sensor is more or less the same as on a 20MP APS-C sensor. The EOS 5Ds and EOS 5Ds R are not for the sport and wildlife photogs out there. Both cameras are for studio and landscape photography.
The two crop modes are an interesting feature, for sure it was on the wish list of many pros, and it is a primer for Canon. All in all, and judging according to the specs, these are two cameras that professional photographers will love. Looks like Canon is well listening to the needs of their customers.
The big question is: is this a Sony sensor?!? What do you think?
Do you think the EOS 5Ds and EOS 5Ds R have a sensor made by Sony?
As you probably know Canon is rumored to make a big announcement following Friday February 6. So, it comes to no wonder that we are getting a lot of rumors these days.
I have been told (thanks) that among the Powershot cameras Canon is supposed to announce before CP+ (i.e. next week), there is also the new large sensor Powershot camera that Canon themselves leaked in a few occasions.
The same source also said this camera will feature a Sony sensor, like the Powershot G7 X. No specs so far (anyone?). Since this Powershot is touted as having a big zoom range, I wonder what the figures are. All we know so far is what Canon Hong Kong wrote on their homepage some time ago:
New PowerShot Digital Compact Camera Under Development Featuring large image sensor, high zoom capability and compact body
Canon is developing a new premium digital compact camera that combines the merits of both large image sensor and high-magnification optical zoom lens in response to the demands from users looking for high quality high zoom performance. Offering both convenience from a compact body and excellent super telephoto performance, this camera is perfect for everyday or travel shooting in high quality.
