Samyang Will Soon Announce The Lens “Of Your Dreams” (50mm f/1.2) – Update

Update: There was a typo: the lens is f/1.2 not f/2

Update #2 (thanks jevgeni): There is more than one lens coming, the English teaser says “Dreams Come True! On August 26th, your dream lenses are coming“. See the image at the end of the post.

Samyang (aka Rokinon, and other brand names) is set to announce a new Cine lens. Rumors suggest it will be a 50mm f/1.2 lens, and Samyang puts it in their VDSLR line-up.

Samyang touts the lens as “the dream will soon be true. At Aug. 26, the lens you are dreaming will come out”

So, there is something interesting coming on August 26th. Samyang made some amazing lenses in the last years, I am sure this one will also be awesome.

Some Canon EOS 7D Mark II Specifications Surfaced

Canon EOS 7D Mark II mock-up

We are getting closer to the announcement! While very few information has leaked so far, some bits managed to surface on the web [via The New Camera]. For the time being the following specifications can be considered at least as plausible:

  • Alloy body – Same as EOS 1 series DSLRs
  • EOS-1 style top plate
  • 24MP
  • Hybrid Sensor – Multilayer + Dual Pixel CMOS AF
  • No Wifi built-in
  • Not touch screen, super durable LCD cover
  • 12fps shooting (or faster)
  • New AF system

The fact that the EOS 7D replacement might not feature WiFi puzzles me a bit. Other sites were saying that it is due to the full metal body, but it’s hard to figure out (at least for me) that Canon has not the skills to make WiFi work in a full metal body. It’s just a matter of placement of the antenna.

There are at least 3 patents filed by Canon that may refer to 3 of the features in the list above. A patent for a multi-layer sensor, a patent for a new generation of Dual Pixel AF, and a patent for high frame rates for continuous shooting.

I Told You: No Canon Medium Format Camera!

Canon Rumor

I have always told you there will not be a Canon medium format camera set to be announced soon. Now also others started to correct the rumors they have posted in the weeks before.

While it is more than plausible that Canon is doing research on all kind of sensors (they are always doing it), and hence also on sensors bigger than 35mm, there are no plans to announce or even release such a camera in the near future (if anytime). Several sources told me that all the media format rumors of the last weeks where either wishful thinking or simply taken from unreliable sources.

Sorry for all those who hoped it was true.

Canon EOS 7D Replacement Build Like A Tank And Coming Without WiFi?

EOS 7D Replacement

The glorious Canon EOS 7D

A new EOS 7D replacement rumor surfaced on the web (via CR). The rumor suggests that the Canon EOS 7D replacement will have the build quality of the EOS-1 series (this was rumored in the past 1 | 2) and that it will not have WiFi built in (that’s new).

The lack of WiFi functionality may have a good reason. If the EOS 7D replacement body is a full metal body (it has to be if it is build like the EOS-1 series), WiFi transmission could be unreliable. However, it is hard to figure out that Canon would not be able to implement the antenna in a way that makes WiFi possible despite the full metal body. If true, the lack of WiFi is going to disappoint a lot of people.

The rumor also suggests that the EOS 7D replacement will have a very high frame rate. A pertinent patent was filed by Canon. And we might see a new generation of Canon’s Dual Pixel AF on the EOS 7D replacement.

The Canon EOS 7D saw some heavy discounts in the last weeks and has become a very good deal, you may want to check the price for your country: B&H Photo, Adorama, Amazon USA, Amazon Canada, Canon Canada, Canon USA

Another Mention Of A Possible Canon Medium Format Camera

Canon Medium Format Camera

If you follow Canon Watch you know that I am highly sceptical regarding the rumors that point to a Canon medium format camera. However, Photography Bay cites a source “who has had advanced knowledge in the past” claiming that Canon may announce a camera with a “sensor bigger than 35mm” in September (which means for Photokina).

While I am still not convinced about the possibility of such an announcement, I know that I may also be wrong. There is no doubt that Canon has the facilities and engineering know-how to produce a medium format sensor. Only time will tell.

What do you think?

Canon Medium Format Gossip, Again (but it’s just gossip)

Canon Medium Format

Again some gossip surfaced suggesting Canon might step into the medium format realm. It’s now years that such rumors surface, more or less at regular intervals.

The rumor says that Canon is sending questionnaires to selected users, asking them their thoughts about medium format sensors, and all the consequences it implies (lenses etc). In the last months there were similar rumors that Nikon (also considered unreliable) and Sony might develop a 50MP, medium format sensor, and my first thought was: there will soon be a similar rumor about Canon. Since this will start making the rounds soon I don’t want you to miss my point of view.

I consider this rumor as absolutely unreliable (I would like to use another term but I am too polite :-). I got the same rumor but didn’t publish it due to my strict policy about rumors. I only post rumors that are double (if not triple) checked and/or come from sources I know to be reliable. Other sites have a 4-tier system for rumors, where level 1 is the least reliable and level 4 can be considered as good as granted. Rumors published here on Canon Watch have to be at least at tier 2.

This rumor is more on the side of “wishful thinking” or “let’s make some buzz”. As far as my knowledge goes, there are no such plans in Canon’s hidden files. I may be wrong, obviously.
