Canon EOS R3 Sensor Resolution Confirmed To Be 24MP

It seems the uncertainty about the imaging sensor resolution of the upcoming Canon EOS R3 is over. It’s 24MP.

Pictures taken at the Olympic Games made it into a forum. Looking at the EXIF data shows the sensor resolution is 24MP. Not 45MP, not 30MP, but 24MP. I already hear the usual folks scream and call it a scandal.

Die-hard Rumor About Canon EOS R With APS-C Sensor Gets New Push

It’s years now hat this rumor comes up at regular intervals. Canon making an EOS R with APS-C sensor.

It seems the rumor about Canon allegedly working on a camera with RF mount and an APS-C sensor has now been downgraded to Canon “actively been doing market research” to learn if such a camera makes any sense. We stated since this rumor came up: it does not. Neither is the future of the EOS M system uncertain or unknown. It’s a best selling APS-C mirrorless camera line-up.

The rumor about a camera with RF mount and APS-C has always had a home in the interweb of rumor mills. It’s years old, it started a few weeks after the release of the first Canon EOS R, and has always been utterly unrealistic. At least to us. The rumor got a climax in June 2021 when the suggestion of not less than three EOS R cameras with APS-C sensor came up. It appears now it is like we are “going to see one someday” in the best of cases.

There is the question of the successor of the Canon EOS 7D Mark II, Canon’s pro-oriented APS-C DSLR. A rumor we got suggests Canon does not think there are enough 7D2 shooters to justify a replacement. The EOS R system appears to be the cure for everything.

Mainstream Media Suggests Canon EOS R3 Might Have 45MP

We know plenty about the upcoming Canon EOS R3, with the notable exception of price, announcement date, and imaging sensor resolution. A mainstream media article backs our rumor about a 45MP sensor.

Discussing the rumored specifications of the Nikon Z9, Techradar reports an allegedly solid rumor suggesting the Nikon Z9 might have a 45MP imaging sensor doing up to 30fps. Techradar writes:

Canon hasn’t yet officially confirmed the resolution of the Canon EOS R3, its equivalent mirrorless camera for pro sports photographers, but rumors have strongly suggested that it’ll also be a 45MP camera. We do already officially know that R3 will be able to shoot 30fps bursts and oversampled 4K video.

Other sources have suggested a 30MP sensor is going to be featured on the EOS R3. Time will tell.

Latest intel suggests an EOS R3 announcement in Fall is likely. Expect the EOS R3 to get eventually announced in September 2021. In the meantime you might check some product images, or have a look at an interview with a Canon exec. Here are are the known and rumored EOS R3 specification in one list:

Canon Set To Release A Sub $800 Full Frame Mirrorless Camera?

Is this possible? A mirrorless camera with a full frame imaging sensor for less than $800? A new rumor suggests it is.

Canon Rumors reports with confidence that Canon might release such a camera in 2022. An EOS R model that will go over the counter for less than $800. Mind the EOS RP launched at $1,299 (and is currently at $999). Along with a kit lens this could sell for less than $1,000.

No specifications or other information for the time being. Not sure what to think about this rumor. Is this even possible? What do you think?

A New Professional Canon 4K Camcorder Might Be Released Soon

Canon might be set to soon release a new 4K video camera, a new rumor suggests.

The possibly upcoming Canon 4K camcorder might feature-wise be below the Canon XF705. These are the so far rumored specifications:

  • 4K 1″ sensor
  • full-sized HDMI ports
  • 12G
  • similar codecs as the EOS C70

Name and pricing are not known yet. The new Canon 4K camcorder might get announced at NAB 2021 in October.
