The Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L Is Coming Soon (most probably)

EF 11-24 f/4L

More or less 2 weeks ago the image above showed up on kakaku.com, disappeared shortly after, and was spotted and shared by digicame-info.

It appears, at least I have been told so, that the lens is real and should soon be announced. This comes from a source that was _not_ always right in the past, so take it with a grain of salt. However, a lot points to the fact that we have a serious rumor here. First and foremost, the pic looks truly authentic and not photoshopped. Second, there is a patent for a 11-24mm f/4 lens that surfaced some time ago (January 2014). Third, I have this source insisting that it will be announced soon :-) In one word: the picture of the lens appears to have been a real leak, for whatever reason.

To some degree all this copes well with a long running rumor suggesting that Canon may eventually announce an eagerly awaited (and much rumored) high resolution DSLR. Recently, even Canon itself mentioned the development of a high resolution sensor in an interview with Mr. Masaya Maeda, Managing Director and Chief Executive, Image Communication Products Operations at Canon. The EF 11-24mm f/4L could be announced together with this high res camera. While I still have some doubts about the high res camera, I think the 11-24mm has a very good chance to be real.

Stay tuned. Your comments and thoughts are welcome, let me know in the comment section.

Weird Rumor: Next Rebel T6i/750D With EVF?

750D
A rather weird rumor surfaced on the web. It’s suggested that the next Rebel (i.e. T6i/EOS 750D) may feature an EVF (electronic viewfinder). Moreover, this new DSLR is said to feature the same sensor as the EOS 70D and a DIGIC 6 processor. The announcement is expected for Q2 2015.

What do you think? I can’t really believe an EVF makes sense, at least not on a “classic” DSLR. The 70D sensor and DIGIC 6 sound both plausible, if not logic. It’s common practice by Canon to mount features of higher models in more affordable cameras after a year or so. If someone can help me understand the usefulness of an EVF on a DSLR, I would be glad :-)

Maybe the next Canon Rebels will be mirrorless? Or have a translucent mirror like Sony’s SLT cameras?

Next Canon Full-Frame DSLRs Will Feature Dual Pixel AF (and 6D Mark II has tilt-able display)

Canon Rumor

A trusted source told me that the EOS 5D Mark IV and EOS 6D Mark II will feature a sensor with Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS Auto-Focus technology. Apparently Dual Pixel AF will not come with the EOS-1D X’s next iteration. The same source told me that the EOS 6D Mark II will feature a tilt-able display.

Previous rumor has it that the EOS 5D Mark IV will be announced in 2015, and that it will feature 4k video.

CW’s take:

Dual Pixel AF on Canon’s next enthusiast and semi-pro full-frame DSLRs makes sense. First, Dual Pixel AF is a groundbreaking technology that has to and will be featured on all next Canon DSLRs. Second, Dual Pixel AF is a videographers dream. The 5D Mark IV will be committed to videography as the 5Ds before. Third, Canon just announced their first STM zoom lens with EF mount (i.e. for FF DSLRs), the EF 24-105mm IS STM; Dual Pixel AF and STM lenses work perfectly together. The fact that there is a full-frame STM zoom lens gives some credit to the rumor.

What do you think?

Canon Set To Announce A 46MP Professional DSLR Next Month?

Canon

Thanks Sally

On fredmiranda.com a thread showed up where it is suggested that Canon might release a 46MP professional DSLR next month, for PhotoPlus in New York City.

The supposed high-res camera is said to come for $8,000-$9,000. This rumor is less implausible than you may think. Just a few days ago a truly authentic looking image of an 11-24mm f/4L lens showed up. If the lens is real it might point to an announcement to come soon.

Canon Working On A New Powershot Camera With Large Sensor? (Update)

PowershotPowershot

Canon Hong Kong‘s page about the latest announced products contains a curious note. The note is at the end of the page, after the Powershot N2 description. It says:

New PowerShot Digital Compact Camera Under Development
Featuring large image sensor, high zoom capability and compact body

Canon is developing a new premium digital compact camera that combines the merits of both large image sensor and high-magnification optical zoom lens in response to the demands from users looking for high quality high zoom performance. Offering both convenience from a compact body and excellent super telephoto performance, this camera is perfect for everyday or travel shooting in high quality.

Sounds like a development announcement. Is a large sensor, super-zoom compact camera coming from Canon?

Update: DCwatch posted an article where this upcoming Powershot camera is mentioned. Below you see a picture of a slide where the development announcement is shown.
