Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4 To Come For Photokina 2014?

Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4
The Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4

Two hints point in this direction. First, diglloyd posted a notification coming from Zeiss USA, saying:

We confirm the Otus 1.4/85 lens and our intention to introduce sometime in the near future.

Next, Photo Rumors reports that Zeiss is rumored to announce the Otus 85mm f/1.4 at Photokina in September. Photokina would fit perfectly into the “sometimes in the near future” schedule of Zeiss USA.

Actually there is only one Zeiss Otus lens on sale, the 55mm f/1.4 (see how it compares to the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art)

Has The Canon EOS 7D Replacement Been Delayed To Q3 2014? (and EOS M3, 750D Tidbits)

EOS 7D Replacement
Fake EOS 7D Mark II (mock-up)

Another rumor in the long series of rumors about the replacement for the Canon EOS 7D.

Latest rumors were suggesting a possible announcement in Q2 2014. But a new rumor that surfaced on the web is suggesting we will see the successor of the EOS 7D (price & specs) not earlier than in Q3 2014. The rumor further suggests that the delay is due to manufacturing issues related to the Dual Pixel AF technology that is featured on Canon’s newest sensor generation. So the delay doesn’t only affect the successor of the 7D but, according to the rumor source, also the announcement of the successor of the EOS 700D (price & specs), and the replacement for the EOS 100D (price & specs).

The rumor suggests a “higher performance” version of the 70D’s sensor for the replacement of the EOS 7D. But was does “higher performance” mean? More megapixel? And then “cheaper versions” of the same sensor are said to be featured on the 700d and 100D replacements. Again, was does “cheaper version” mean?

The rumor sounds a bit weird to me. And my sources are still suggesting a Q2 announcement date for the 7D successor. That’s not to say it is sure we will see a 7D replacement announcement before summer. It appears as if Canon is doing everything right to keep their plans hidden. We can’t even be sure the replacement of the EOS 7D will be named EOS 7D Mark II. There have also been rumors stating that there will be no EOS 7D Mark II at all.

It appears that the reported rumor was passed to various European Canon dealers to let them know that there will be a delay (everyone out there?).

And then there is another rumor that surfaced, about two possible new EOS M (price & specs) models to be announced for Photokina in September 2014. Again, it is suggested there will be an entry-level and a pro-level EOS M system camera, both appear to have the moniker “M3”.

Since the EOS M was released there have always been rumors suggesting a prosumer model in the EOS M series. Personally I think there is a lot of wishful thinking concerning a prosumer EOS M3.

Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Will Be Released April 25th (Canon mount), More Sample Pics

Sigma 50mm f/1.4

Japanese site mynavi (translated) seems to refer to an official Sigma statement when they say that Sigma will release the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM for Canon EF mount on April 25th. The price is said to be 127,000 Yen, which is a bit more than the rumored $1,000 for the Sigma 50mm f/1.4.

Sample pics shot with the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM and an EOS 5D Mark III also showed up at Gear for Image [source: SR].

Could mean Sigma will make an official announcement very soon.

Does Canon Make You Pay For Known Design Flaws?

Canon

After having reported the Canon EOS-1D X’s auto-focus issue in cold weather, an information taken from a Canon internal document, Canon Rumors claims to have more such documents, and these documents apparently show that Canon is charging for repairs of known issues or design flaws of their gear.

According to the cited source, Canon knows about

a couple of lenses with design flaws and Canon is charging $250-$450 for these repairs out of warranty and not fully disclosing the design flaw to the customer.

Which, in plain words, means that Canon may charge you for repairs that are out of warranty for gear that has a known design flaw.

I don’t know what to think about that. If true, and worse: if proven, that Canon did not disclose design flaws and even charges for the repair of such issue, it could hit customers confidence in what the Canon brand name represents. Consider that these issues concern high-end gear as the EOS-1D X, which doesn’t exactly cost a handful of peanuts. The debate if Canon Rumors should or not post the documents they say to have is still going on here.

Canon EOS 7D Replacement To Come In May (and another SX60 mention)?

EOS 7D Replacement

Another rumor-bit in the almost endless Canon EOS 7D replacement rumors series.

After a series of rumors suggesting that there will no announcement soon, now a new rumor suggests that Canon may announce the successor of the EOS 7D (price & specs) in May. Note that there is no mention of an “EOS 7D Mark II” – it is still not sure the 7D replacement will have this moniker.

Finally, the rumor says there will also be a couple of new Powershots (the Powershot SX60 HS IS among them) and possibly also 2 new lenses.

Canon EOS Smart 1
Images courtesy of Photo Rumors

Update: As it was obvious, the image is photoshopped. Thanks to visitor Prasad we know it’s the image of a luxury phone by Tag Heuer that was used for the Photoshop job.

The original by Tag Heuer

A greek magazine published an article about a Canon smartphone, named Canon EOS Smart 1. It is said to have the following specifications:

  • Android KitKat 4.4
  • 8 core 64bit Snapdragon 615 with 8 ARM Cortex A53 inside
  • 8GB RAM
  • 64GB storage
  • CPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi
  • Double lens camera
  • The first camera has 1″ sensor 12,2×8,8mm 20MP and 35mm equivalent lens
  • The second camera has 1/1,7″ 10MP sensor with 3x liquid zoom lens (with liquid optical elements that change zoom range by piezoelectricity).

What do you think? Is this for real or just an anticipated April’s Fool joke? I mean “liquid zoom lenses”? ;-)
