DPReview posted their Canon EOS R50 hands-on review. They also tackle the question many are wondering about: can or does the EOS R50 replace the hugely popular Canon EOS M50 Mark II? DPReview says:

The similarities between the two cameras [EOS R50 and EOS M50 II, editor’s note] are plentiful. […] In short, they seem to be targeting the same user base of casual users, beginners and those seeking a small, simple camera.

So what does the R50 mean for the M-mount?

Canon hasn’t said anything official on what the future holds for the M-mount, but it’s been four and a half years since the last EF-M lens launch and two and a half years since the last new EOS M body. The M50 was one of Canon’s best-selling EF-M mount models and yet we haven’t seen any movement or new support to expand on the EF-M mount in years. Now, in addition to having no new news, we’ve gotten what looks like a direct upgrade/replacement of the M50 II, new and improved in every way.

Canon Ends “Kiss” Camera Lineup In Japan (and “Rebel” lineup too?)

After almost 30 years, Canon is killing the popular “Kiss” camera lineup in Japan (and Asia).

The news comes from ITMedia News, and is nicely summed up by Digicame-Info:

  • On February 8, Canon announced the APS-C mirrorless “EOS R50” that inherited the concept of the company’s entry-level single-lens camera “EOS Kiss” series.
  • The R50 is a model that aims to improve image quality with the EOS R system while inheriting the concept of the company’s “EOS Kiss” series, “simple, clean, compact”. However, it does not bear the name of Kiss, and is not a direct successor to the current model “EOS Kiss M2” of the same brand. Nonetheless, while covering the entry level targeted by Kiss, it will be developed as a model that conveys the appeal of mirrorless cameras more widely.
  • The Kiss series is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, but as mentioned above, the R50 is an entry model but not the “Kiss” series. According to Canon Marketing Japan, camera needs have diversified with the changing times, and in order to convey the appeal of mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras to a wider range of people than Kiss users so far, it has been integrated into a model name that is used globally instead of the Kiss brand. It is said that
  • Kiss is a brand name that was originally used in Japan, for example, the overseas name of the EOS Kiss M2 was “EOS M50 Mark II”. However, in addition to the EOS Kiss M2, the EOS Kiss series including single-lens reflex cameras such as the “EOS Kiss X10/X10i” are still on sale, so the Kiss brand will not disappear soon.

This makes me wonder if Canon will kill the Rebel camera lineup too. I guess they will. The new Canon EOS R50 seems to introduce a new entry-level camera lineup that might well replace the Kiss and Rebel lineups.

Any idea?

Canon Patent: 18-100mm F4 And 14-60mm F4 Lenses

Another Canon patent application today, for a 18-100mm f/4 lens and a 14-60mm f/4 lens.

Canon patent application 2023018409 (Japan, published 2/8/2023) discusses optical formulas for two lenses we think are for the RF mount, 18-100mm f/4 and a 14-60mm f/4.

From the patent literature:

To provide a zoom lens that is compatible with a short back and suppresses variations in optical performance due to focusing in a wide-angle range with a wide angle of view.

Description of the Related Art

There is a demand for a compact and lightweight zoom lens compatible with a so-called mirrorless camera without a quick return mirror. For example, it consists of a first lens group with positive refractive power, a second lens group with negative refractive power, and a subsequent group including a plurality of lens groups, arranged in order from the object side to the image side, and the second lens group is the main lens group. A zoom lens with a variable power group is known (.

Further, in recent years, in order to reduce the size of the zoom lens, an imaging apparatus has been proposed that electrically corrects distortion mainly in a wide-angle range among various aberrations of a zoom lens. However, in such an image pickup apparatus, field curvature fluctuations, in particular, become large as aberration fluctuations during focusing.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

It is an object of the present invention to provide a zoom lens that is compatible with shortback and suppresses fluctuations in optical performance due to focusing in a wide-angle range with a wide angle of view, and an imaging apparatus and an imaging system having the zoom lens.

Canon Patent: RF 100-300mm F2.8 x 1.4 Extender Lens

A new Canon patent application for another RF mount lens. Canon patent application 2023018429 (Japan, published 2/8/2023) discusses optical formulas for an RF 100-300mm F2.8 x 1.4 extender lens.

From the patent literature:

A zoom lens having a large aperture and a long focal length is provided, in which the focal length range can be easily changed to the long focal length side by an extender, and good optical performance can be maintained even before and after the extender is inserted.

A known method is to change the focal length of the optical system by inserting an extender (magnification conversion group) separate from the main optical system.

However, since a large air gap is required to insert the extender into the optical path, if the position for inserting the extender is inappropriate, the size of the main optical system and the extender will increase. Also, in order to maintain good optical performance before and after inserting the extender, it is necessary to appropriately set the refractive powers of the lens groups before and after the extender.

In the present invention, by inserting an extender into the main optical system, the focal length range can be easily changed to the long focal length side. The purpose is to provide a long zoom lens.
