Photozone analysed Canon’s new pancake lens for APS-C cameras. The EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM has more to offer than the low price might suggest. The only weak point of the lens is vignetting.

From the conclusion:

[…] nothing wrong with the optical performance of the new Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM. This is especially true for the bitingly sharp center but even the border and corner quality is on a very high level straight from f/2.8. The low amount of lateral CAs contributes to the very high sharpness perception. The barrel distortion is low and rarely an issue. On the downside, the lens produces a rather massive amount of light falloff at max. aperture but stopping down to f/4 solves most of the issue already.

A lens with good build quality that offers a lot of bang for the bucks. Photozone gave the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM a “highly recommended”.

Canon officially announced the Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens. The new EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM has an introductory price of just $149 an can be per-ordered at Adorama | B&H Photo.

Incredibly lightweight, the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM is a fast and versatile lens with advanced AF and superior optics. With a 35mm equivalent focal length of 38mm, it’s appropriate for a variety of purposes. Very good specs. This is a light-weighted, small lens with an amazing minimum focusing distance. And it is equivalent to a highly popular focal length.

Canon Set To Announce New Lenses Very Soon (EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM, EF 24-105mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM, EF 400mm F4 DO IS II USM)

Digicame (translated) posted what I am not shy to define as the first reliable rumor on what Canon is going to announce at Photokina 2014. Yes, these lenses are going to be announced at Photokina 2014!

  • EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM
  • EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM

The EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM was previously rumored to be an EF lens, instead it is an EF-S lens. Not yet sure if it will be a pancake lens.

The EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM is aimed at full-frame shooters, who will soon enjoy the benefits of the STM technology for their video shooting. This lens will probably be the next kit lens for the 6D. It will for sure be cheaper than an “L” grade lens. No one saw this lens come.

Finally, the EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM lens is the successor to the Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS. Several patents filed by Canon in the past pointed in this direction, the latest patent being this one.
