Digicame (translated) posted what I am not shy to define as the first reliable rumor on what Canon is going to announce at Photokina 2014. Yes, these lenses are going to be announced at Photokina 2014!

  • EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM
  • EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM
  • EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM

The EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM was previously rumored to be an EF lens, instead it is an EF-S lens. Not yet sure if it will be a pancake lens.

The EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM is aimed at full-frame shooters, who will soon enjoy the benefits of the STM technology for their video shooting. This lens will probably be the next kit lens for the 6D. It will for sure be cheaper than an “L” grade lens. No one saw this lens come.

Finally, the EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM lens is the successor to the Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS. Several patents filed by Canon in the past pointed in this direction, the latest patent being this one.

Stay tuned, I am sure pictures will follow soon.

A New EF 24mm f/2.8 Pancake Lens Coming From Canon?

EF 24mm f/2.8 Pancake Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens

Last week a rumor surfaced suggesting Canon may announce a new EF 24mm pancake lens. A possible f/2.8 aperture is murmured/assumed. Moreover, a new wide angle zoom might also be on the radar. Speculations point to the previously rumored 15-85 f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens. Finally, a no further specified standard zoom is mentioned.

The news comes from CR, where the rumor is classified as plausible and coming from a new source.

Samyang 24mm f/1.4 Gets Same DxOMark As Canon 24mm f/1.4L II

DxOMark felt the pulse of the manual focus Samyang/Bower/Rokinon 24mm f/1.4 (price & specs), and it turned out the Samyang got the same DxOMark score (31) as Canon’s Ef 24mm f/4L II lens (price & specs). The Canon is sharper and has less distortion but the Samyang produces less vignetting and chromatic aberration are better controlled at all apertures.

From the conclusion:

Although the Samyang is a phenomenal performer, when stopped its sharpness wide open doesn’t match that of rival high-speed designs. Given the modest pricing [$669] it will no doubt continue to be a popular model but it would be all the more attractive with the addition of automatic aperture control and perhaps AF-assist (though it’s often unreliable without experience). There’s another, often overlooked benefit from the inclusion of data transmission – EXIF data stored in Raw files could be used by third-party software suppliers to apply lens corrections. Future updates such as these would seem likely but for now the Canon mount version is overshadowed by the better performing rivals.

It is up to anyone to know if a manually operated lens like the Samyang is ok for their needs. The optical performance is very good and if you have at last a minimum of photographic experience, then this lens shouldn’t be a problem at all.

Canon Working on EF-S 24mm STM Lens, And On A New USM Motor (C-USM)?

EF-S 24mm
EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens

New rumors surfaced on the web.

Canon may announce an EF-S 24mm STM lens later this year, some time in the Summer 2014. No specs so far.

And it is murmured Canon is working on a new USM motor technology, called C-USM (Compact Ultrasonic Motor). The new C-USM motor is said to appear first on a 50mm lens, and could also be announced later this year.

Both are new rumors, take with a grain of salt.
