Canon EOS 5DS, EOS M3, EF 11-24mm f/4L Price and Availability in Italy (and Europe)

Thanks! I got word that Italian Canon resellers have a prospected schedule and price tag for some of Canon’s latest gear:

  • EF 11-24mm f/4L availability end of February 2015, price €3,300
  • EOS M3 kit with EF-M 18-55mm IS STM availability in May 2015, price €770
  • EOS 5DS and 5DS R availability in May 2015, price €3,800 and €4000, respectively

This schedule and the prices are indicative for the rest of Europe, possibly Germany and UK will start shipping earlier. The EOS M3 is already available for pre-order at Amazon UK for £599 and Amazon DE for €749. You can also pre-order the M3 at at DigitalRev (ships internationally).

This is just for fun. However, it seems Canon is making fancy coffee mugs for the Canon EOS 5DS marketing campaign. Well, the images speak for themselves :-) The “small” 36MP are a clear reference to Nikon’s D800 series.

With a 50MP sensor Canon is again the resolution champ in the full-frame domain (interview with the man behind the 5DS). For a round-up of hands-on reviews see after the next pic.

Interview with the Mastermind behind the Canon EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R

Canon Professional Network published an interview with Mr. Tsunemasa Ohara, Senior General Manager of Camera Research and Development at Canon Inc., the mastermind behind the development of the 50 MP Canon EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R.

From the interview:

CPN: What are the key technical advantages of the cameras compared to existing competitor high-resolution DSLRs and medium format cameras?

Tsunemasa Ohara: In terms of megapixels, the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R are almost the same as a medium format camera and offer the same levels of image quality too. The key advantage from an EOS perspective is that handling and mobility is much better than a medium format camera. This is a major advantage with our product because it is smaller and lighter and can be used in a wider variety of situations.

Canon EOS 5DS & 5DS R Technical Review by Tony Northrup (and thoughts on lens resolution)

Tony Northrup does an exhaustive technical review of Canon’s new EOS 5DS and 5DS R (preview videos). There is a lot of talk about resolution and how much resolution modern lenses have. He does some math do compute a “perceptual resolution”, i.e. an approximate figure of an optic’s resolution, to get an idea on how well a given lens could do on the 5DS and 5DS R sensor.
