Canon EOS 5DS Low ISO Dynamic Range up to 2 Stops Better Than EOS-1D X?

Some interesting (and yet unverified) news coming from people testing a pre-production EOS 5DS surfaced.

Northlight Images received a comment from a user testing a pre-production 5DS with DPP4. It appears that at low ISO the dynamic range of the EOS 5DS is 1.5-2 stops better than the EOS-1D X, while high ISO performance (i.e. ISO 6400) falls slightly behind the EOS 7D Mark II. The same comment/rumor says the 5DS sensor is similar to the 7D2 sensor from a technological point of view (puzzles me), and that the 5DS sensor has been tuned to deliver the best possible low ISO performance.

Another comment says that the colour filter array of the EOS 5Ds is much closer to the EOS-1Ds Mark III than to the EOS-1D X.

The video above is an interview DPReview conducted with Canon’s Chuck Westfall, the talk is about the new Canon EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R. In the interview Mr. Westfall says the 5DS and 5DS R have no improvement in dynamic range over the EOS 5D Mark III.

Asked who made the sensor in Canon’s high resolution DSLRs:

Westfall said the 50.6MP CMOS sensors in the 5DS and 5DS R are developed and produced by Canon. When asked whether they were created in collaboration with Sony as some rumors indicated, Westfall responded by saying: “Absolutely not. The sensors were developed completely in-house, by Canon

This should put an end to the rumor suggesting Canon may use sensors manufactured by Sony on their future DSLR.

As far as dynamic range is concerned, we’re told that the new 5DS and 5DS R should give the same performance as the current EOS 5D Mark III. If true, this means that the new cameras won’t be able to offer the same industry-leading dynamic range of Sony’s current APS-C and full-frame sensors, but at least it isn’t a step backwards. And hey – 50MP!
[…] Without a doubt, the headline specification of both the EOS 5DS and 5DS R is their incredible pixel count, but characteristically, Canon hasn’t skimped on useful core features. No doubt learning from both Sony and Nikon’s early missteps, Canon has implemented new mirror lockup options with variable exposure delays between 1/8 and 2 seconds in normal OVF shooting mode.

our first impressions are pretty positive. Without a doubt, most photographers don’t need 50MP (nor 36MP or 24MP for that matter) but some do, and this places the 5DS (and especially the 5DS R) firmly in medium-format territory for studio and wedding photographers.
