Canon’s new megapixel champions, the world’s highest resolution full-frame cameras started shipping, and reviews and first impression are showing up everywhere.

I expect in real terms the difference in pixel size is going to mean a tradeoff between resolution and dynamic range – though it’s too early to conclude for sure. I do believe that the gain in printability – assuming lenses that are of sufficient quality – will be noticeable. I’m also curious about some of the other lenses for the Canon system that have no Nikon equivalents – the 17 TSE, for instance, and the MPE-65.

Travel photographer and Canon Explorer Lucie Debelkova was one of the first to shoot with the high-resolution EOS 5DS R and, as she explains to CPN, she found 50.6 Megapixels brought her much closer to the magic of the north.

[…] if you want the highest possible resolution while staying with the EF system, the 5DS is the camera for you. It captures images with 8688×5792 pixels, compared to 7360×4912 on the D810, allowing you to output four inches wider at 300dpi. If we’re staying within Canon’s World, it’s a huge jump from the 5760×3840 pixels of the EOS 5D Mark III: you can output at 29x19in with the 5DS versus 19x13in for the EOS 5D Mark III at 300dpi.

It appears the Canon EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R are starting to ship in Europe. I got word from readers that resellers in Italy and Germany are going to ship pre-orders next week. Never the less, both cameras are still not available for pre-order on Amazon Germany or Amazon UK, and other Amazon EU sites.

Amateur Photographer reviewed the Canon EOS 5DS R. From the conclusion:
There’s little doubt that the Canon EOS 5DS R is one of the most impressive cameras we’ve ever seen. With its 50.6MP sensor, robust build, and reliable metering and autofocus, it’s sure to become a favourite with working photographers for whom ultimate resolution really matters. Indeed, with 20% higher linear resolution than 36MP cameras, it lays down the gauntlet to Sony and Nikon to play catch-up again, although it would be naive to expect this to take long.
[…] Image quality is superb, and the ‘fine detail’ picture style is capable of packing practically all the captured detail into the camera’s JPEGs. I’d still expect most users to shoot raw, but it’s great that JPEGs are much more usable than on recent Canon DSLRs. The only caveat is that low ISO dynamic range still doesn’t quite match its peers, so you can’t dig as much detail out of deep shadows as you can from cameras such as the Nikon D810.

LensRentals posted the results of their initial testing of the Canon EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R. They used the following lenses to test the sensor: Canon EF 50mm f/1.4, Zeiss 21mm f/2.8, , Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 Otus, and Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II.
In the conclusion they write:
Just as it was the Nikon high resolution cameras were released, it will take months of testing and photographer experience to determine which lenses do exactly what with the new cameras. But it’s not a critical thing to know at first. Every lens will provide better on the new cameras, at least in the center of the image. How much of a difference will range from noticeably better, to “wow” depending upon the lens, type of photography, and subject matter.
