Canon set to announce two new lenses this week: EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II and EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III

Canon Rumors Canon Full Frame Mirrorless

After a long row of rumors we finally have a solid confirmation. Canon will announce two new L lenses this week.

One lens is the EF 70-200mm f/4L II, which indeed was due for a replacement. The other lens comes as a surprise. It’s the new version of one of the most popular Canon L lenses among professionals, the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L III.

While we have no exact date for the announcement, we can, based on Canon’s announcement patterns, expect both lenses to be announced either Thursday or Friday of this week (that’s June 7 or 8, 2018, depends also where you geographically are).

I love hacking projects like this. They may be useless for some people but I think they are way cool.

Photographer Bastiaan Ekeler designed and 3D printed a Canon EF mount adapter to fit a Canon telephoto lens on a Game Boy. It’s the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 with a Canon 1.4x extender.

As Bastiaan sums it up:

I designed and built a Canon EF Mount for my Game Boy Camera. The GBC has a sensor size of about 3.6mm² which seems equivalent to a 1/4″ sensor (Wikipedia). This gives the GBC a crop factor of about 10.81. With my 70-200 f4 mounted on a 1.4x extender, this gives me a max equivalent focal distance of about 200×1.4×10.81=3,026.8mm.

The lens adapter was designed in Rhinoceros 3D and printer on a Monoprice Select Mini v2 in black PLA at a pretty rough layer height (for speed). Minimal supports and cleanup are required to make the lens fit semi-snugly. The GBC sensor PCB screws into the back of the 3D print and with a little cutting and filing, the whole things mounts onto the partly-disassembled GBC, all with the original hardware. If there is enough interest, I might make some modifications to the 3D model and post it on Thingiverse for others to print and experiment with.

[…]

Fun fact, this combination gives me almost the exact focal length to get the moon to fill the tiny 128×112px frame. Shooting the moon handheld with a ~3000mm equivalent lens on an unlit gameboy screen that updates at about 1fps in low light situations is not an easy task but I got a couple of shots in!

Be sure to read his article to get more insight, and check the sample photos. Kudos Bastiaan!

New Canon EF 70-200mm lenses coming in June?

EF 70-200mm

A rumor that turned out to be wrong last year is getting new heat, and some backing from news outlets.

It’s suggested that Canon may announce two new 70-200mm lenses. One is said to be the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II, the other the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III. The originator of the rumor is 100% sure about the former, and 95% sure about the latter. We are not.

The lenses that are supposed to be replaced aren’t that old. The EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS II is less than eight years old, the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS is about 15 years old. At least the latter can be considered ripe for substitution, and there have indeed been some serious hints it may be announced somewhen in 2018. We never heard anything about the fabled 70-200mm f2.8 IS III.

Please consider that if those lenses are scheduled to be announced in less than a month we should have seen some leaks so far, or will see them very soon. Take this with a huge amount of salt.

Stay tuned.

Canon EF 70-200mm F/4L IS II USM lens may be announced before Photokina 2018

Canon EF 70-200mm F/4L IS II

The Canon EF 70-200mm F/4L IS II USM lens might be announced soon, likely before Photokina 2018, according to Nokishita.

There have been rumors on other sites about an EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III lens. Unfortunately it turned out to be wrong.

The upcoming Canon EF 70-200mm F/4L IS II will replace the Canon EF 70-200mm F/4L IS (announced in 2003).

Sigma’s new 70-200mm f/2.8 ART and 70-200mm f/4 CONTEMPORARY lenses coming ahead of Photokina, not CP+

sigma

Weeks ago we were told Sigma may soon announce new 70-200mm f/2.8 ART and 70-200mm f/4 CONTEMPORARY lenses. We were expecting the announcement before  CP+. But nope.

The same source has now told us, Sigma has delayed the release of these new lenses until September, 2018. This makes us think Sigma is set for an announcement ahead of Photokina (September 2018). So far we have no hints about price and specifications.

Stay tuned.

Sigma set to announce two new 70-200mm lenses ahead of CP+ (ART and CONTEMPORARY)

sigma

Sigma will soon announce two new lenses for Canon EF and Nikon F mount. Both lenses are said to be on display at CP+ (which starts March 1, 2018). That’s what NikonEye is reporting. Well, they are reporting the F mount version but we have been told both lenses will come for the Canon EF mount too.

The two rumored lenses are a 70-200mm f/2.8 ART lens, and a 70-200mm f/4 CONTEMPORARY lens. No hints about the price for the time being.

We also expect Canon to announce a bunch of stuff ahed of CP+. Latest rumor has it there may be a prime lens for the EOS M system coming before CP+.

Stay tuned.
