[CW3] Canon Rebel SL2/EOS 150D coming in August 2015 with 24MP and 19 points AF?

Rebel SL2

Will Canon soon announce the successor of the world’s smallest DSLR, the Rebel SL1/EOS 100D? That’s what a new rumor suggests, and some specs did also appear.

Northlight Images got a tip that the Rebel SL2/EOS 150D will be announced between July and August 2015. These are the rumoured specs:

  • 24.2MP
  • 19 point AF
  • 4.5 fps
  • 1080/30p video
  • Hybrid CMOS AF III focus system
  • 7560 pixel RGB + IR metering
  • Fixed 3″ LCD touchscreen
  • Wi-Fi + NFC

Sounds good and plausible, and if true this specs will make up a pretty small yet powerful DSLR.

[CW2] Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and EOS-1D X Mark II delayed because of new flash system?

Canon RumorCanon Rumor

I have been told (thanks) that the announcement of both the EOS 5D Mark IV and the EOS-1D X Mark II may be delayed because of the new TTL system and new flashes Canon is deveolping.

It seems Canon wants to be sure that the 1D X Mark II and 5D Mark IV are working flawlessly with the new flash system, and hence has extended the developing and testing period of both cameras.

Though the rumour comes from a new source I consider it plausible. There have been rumors of a new flash system that’s developed by Canon, and for sure the company wants to be sure this new system works with their flagship cameras.

About our rumour rating:

  • CW1 – probably fake rumor, not reliable (less than 15% chance to be real)
  • CW2 – rumor from an unknown/new source, but otherwise at least a plausible rumor (15%-40% chance to be real)
  • CW3 – around 50% chance to be real, coming from a known source, or from new source with good insight in Canon’s business
  • CW4 – rumor from a known source that was right in the past, high probability to be true (60%-80% chance to be real)
  • CW5 – as good as certain to be true

[CW3] First Canon EOS 5D Mark IV test units out in the wild?

Canon RumorCanon Rumor

Have the first Canon EOS 5D Mark IV test bodies been handed out to select photographers? That’s what a new rumour suggests. There are no new specifications to talk about, just some suggestions that the EOS 5D Mark IV will not feature the same DIGIC processor that’s expected to come on the EOS-1D X Mark II. Announcement of the EOS 5D Mark IV is still expected for Q4 2015.

Very little is known so far about the EOS 5D Mark IV. Here at Canon Watch we had a tip that the 5D Mark IV could come in two variants: one more video oriented, the other being a straight update to the EOS 5D Mark III.

Stay tuned…

[CW1] Canon working on a professional underwater camera?

Powershot G7 X

A weird rumor surfaced. The rumor suggests Canon is working on a professional underwater camera that “would not require an underwater housing” and that is “far superior to any of the point and shoot options” out there.

I do not know how deep an underwater cameras has to go to be called a professional underwater camera. On the other hand I am pretty sure to know that without an external housing a camera can hardly be taken “seriously” underwater.

What do you think?

A new EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 STM coming (next APS-C kit lens)?

EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6

Egami (translated) spotted a patent filed by Canon for an EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. This lens will replace the EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (released 2009). We got some rumors saying that this lens will come with STM on board. Egami itself suggests it could be the next kit lens for Canon’s high-end APS-C bodies.

[CW2] Canon Rebel SL2 coming Fall 2015 (24MP, smaller than SL1)?

icasl1k1z

Some rumours about the Canon Rebel SL2 surfaced. Canon Rumors reports:

We’re told that an SL2 is definitely on the way and may be shrunk even further. While the thickness of the camera can’t change all that much because of the EF mount, the length, height and weight could be further reduced. One of the ways to reduce the size is implementing an EVF instead of an optical viewfinder. Sony has done this with the A77 DSLR, and Canon has said when the technology is good enough, they may also introduce it into the EOS lineup.

Except for the EVF (Electronic Viewfinder) I think these are plausible generic specs, though it is not clear if the EVF is part of the rumor or just a speculation by CR. I can’t see the point in featuring an EVF on a DSLR, I think it is better suited and makes more sense on a mirrorless camera. The Rebel SL1/100D is (or was) the world’s smallest DSLR and it is nothing but a logic evolution if Canon shrinks the SL2 even further.

It is safe to assume that the Rebel SL2 will have the same 24MP sensor featured on Canon’s recent Rebels, the EOS 760D/Rebel T6i and EOS 750D/Rebel T6s (read about the sensor issue).

What about the name? While it is pretty sure that the SL1 replacement will be named SL2 in the US, there are still no reliable rumours about the EU and Asia names. In EU it could be EOS 150D.
