Canon EF-M 85mm f/1.8 IS STM around the corner? [CW1]

eos m3
Canon EOS M3

A lot of us think that Canon will push the EOS M system after the announcement of the Canon EOS M3. What to some degree is missing are native lenses for the system (though you can use any Canon EF and EF-S lens thru the adapter).

That’s where this rumor perfectly fits. The rumor suggest that a Canon EF-M 85mm f/1.8 IS STM lens may be around the the corner. I am just wondering if a 85mm lens is the most urgent thing to release to push the EOS M system. Other focal lengths would be more appreciated, and also more useful for the EOS M system.

What we heard (here at CW) is that Canon will announce a new EF-M 18-55mm IS STM kit lens, to pair with the new EOS M3. I have no candidate announcement date for the new EF-M 18-55mm IS STM lens, but if the rumor is reliable then an announcement in Q4 2015 could be plausible. Canon would be in time to bundle the new kit lens with the EOS M3, ready for X-Mas sales.

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV murmurings (nothing really new) [CW3]

Canon RumorsCanon Rumors
A rehashing of old Canon EOS 5D Mark IV rumors in a package mimicking new information surfaced on the web. Some of the suggested specs leaked first here on Canon Watch.

  • The EOS 5D Mark IV will come after the EOS-1D X Mark II announcement
  • Q1 of 2016 is the ship time Canon is aiming for
  • EOS 5D Mark IV will have 4K (we were the first to report this)
  • New Speedlite metering system coming with the EOS-1D X Mark II and EOS 5D Mark IV
  • Sensors ranging from 18mp to 28mp are in testing for full frame cameras. I suppose this implicitly means “in testing for the EOS 5D Mark IV”. We were told something else, and I wonder who really believes the EOS 5D Mark IV will have an 18MP sensor (but see next point)
  • EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R were a test for “two model viability”, a model split of the EOS 5D Mark IV still possible. First reported on Canon Watch, Canon may announce a second, cinema oriented EOS 5D Mark IVc with an 18MP sensor
  • New DIGIC processor

All in all nothing that hasn’t been rumored before. I agree with the possible announcement at the beginning of 2016, though it is still possible that Canon may announce the EOS 5D Mark IV at the end of 2015. The reasons for a 2016 announcement of the EOS 5D Mark IV in 2016 may have to do with issues with the new TTL flash system Canon is developing. Hope we will soon get some fresh EOS 5D Mark IV rumors. All EOS 5D Mark IV rumors.

Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II out in the wild, to be announced within next 6 months [CW3]

EF 35mm f/1.4L II
The Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L

New Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II rumors surfaced. The replacement for the EF 35mm f/1.4L could be announced within the next 6 months. The new EF 35mm f/1.4L II is said to feature the latest coating technologies developed by Canon. Being an “L” lens it will obviously be weather sealed.

A smaller filter thread is also rumored, and the EF 35mm f/1.4L II may be a bit longer and bigger than its predecessor. According to the rumor, first samples are undergoing testing by select photographers. No announcement date is suggested. I guess the Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L Mark II will be announced in Fall 2015.

[CW2] More Canon EOS 6D Mark II talk (to shrink and move upmarket?)

Canon RumorCanon Rumor
New bits about the Canon EOS 6D Mark II surfaced on the web. Again the EOS 6D Mark II is said to “move upmarket”, though this time only “slightly”. I do not believe the EOS 6D Mark II will move upmarket. It will remain Canon’s entry-level full-frame DSLR. It may be that the EOS 6D Mark II will have a higher price tag than the EOS 6D had when it was introduced, but that doesn’t mean moving upmarket. The rumor also says the EOS 6D Mark II will be an evolutionary update of the EOS 6D, which, in my opinion, contrasts with the “move upmarket”. Just my two cents.

The rumor also suggests the EOS 6D Mark II will be smaller in size and of lighter weight. The EOS 6D Mark II will not feature the same sensor as another Canon FF DSLR, just like the EOS 6D. NFC should also be on board along with a not specified “new connectivity feature”. The announcement of the EOS 6D Mark II is expected beginning of 2016.

Time ago we got a supposed EOS 6D Mark II specification list (which you should take with a huge grain of salt):

  • 28MP
  • 6 fps
  • ISO 100 – 102400 (expandable to 204800)
  • new AF system (but not the same as on 5DS)
  • 98% viewfinder coverage
  • Single SD card slot
  • WiFi, NFC, and GPS
  • small improvements for video features

[CW2] Canon full-frame astrophotography DSLR coming 2016?

EOS 60Da
Canon EOS 60Da

A new rumor suggests Canon is about to release their first full-frame DSLR for astrophotograhy. No specs, just that it may be anounced “some time in 2016”. There have been two astrophotography DSLRs by Canon so far: the EOS 20Da and the EOS 60Da. This would be the first FF astrophotography camera by Canon.

Could this point to another 5D model later this year? Some time ago we got a rumor saying that the EOS 5D Mark IV will come as two variants, one being a straight update to the EOS 5D Mark III, the other being more cinema oriented. Could the source have confused something? I wonder if the rumored FF astrophotography DSLR is one of the two rumored EOS 5D Mark IV models.

What do you think?

[CW3] Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 Mark III in the works? Canon patent for 16-35mm f/2.8 lens spotted

16-35mm
embodiment: 16-35mm f/2.8

Last week I got a rumor I didn’t take seriously. The rumor suggested that Canon is working on a new version of the highly popular EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM lens. Well. I think I was wrong in not trusting the source. The EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM was released in 2007, so a replacement is not out of the realm of possibilities. Given the patent, I rate the rumour CW3.

Egami (translated) spotted a patent that appears to support the rumour of a EF 16-35mm f/2.8 Mark III lens.
