[CW2] Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and EOS-1D X Mark II delayed because of new flash system?

Canon RumorCanon Rumor

I have been told (thanks) that the announcement of both the EOS 5D Mark IV and the EOS-1D X Mark II may be delayed because of the new TTL system and new flashes Canon is deveolping.

It seems Canon wants to be sure that the 1D X Mark II and 5D Mark IV are working flawlessly with the new flash system, and hence has extended the developing and testing period of both cameras.

Though the rumour comes from a new source I consider it plausible. There have been rumors of a new flash system that’s developed by Canon, and for sure the company wants to be sure this new system works with their flagship cameras.

About our rumour rating:

  • CW1 – probably fake rumor, not reliable (less than 15% chance to be real)
  • CW2 – rumor from an unknown/new source, but otherwise at least a plausible rumor (15%-40% chance to be real)
  • CW3 – around 50% chance to be real, coming from a known source, or from new source with good insight in Canon’s business
  • CW4 – rumor from a known source that was right in the past, high probability to be true (60%-80% chance to be real)
  • CW5 – as good as certain to be true

[CW3] First Canon EOS 5D Mark IV test units out in the wild?

Canon RumorCanon Rumor

Have the first Canon EOS 5D Mark IV test bodies been handed out to select photographers? That’s what a new rumour suggests. There are no new specifications to talk about, just some suggestions that the EOS 5D Mark IV will not feature the same DIGIC processor that’s expected to come on the EOS-1D X Mark II. Announcement of the EOS 5D Mark IV is still expected for Q4 2015.

Very little is known so far about the EOS 5D Mark IV. Here at Canon Watch we had a tip that the 5D Mark IV could come in two variants: one more video oriented, the other being a straight update to the EOS 5D Mark III.

Stay tuned…

(CW3) No 4k to be featured on EOS 5D Mark IV (but Canon Log instead)?

Canon RumorCanon Rumor

After yesterday’s rumour about two possible EOS 5D Mark IV models (5D Mark IV and 5Dc Mark IV), EOSHD posted a tip they received from a “NAB show visitor […] who had spoken off the record to Canon“:

[Canon] believes a 4K 5D Mark IV would completely overshadow the recently released C100 Mark II and so wouldn’t happen, but that Canon LOG would likely go into the camera to allow shot-matching with the XC10.

Doesn’t sound totally implausible. However, as usual with rumours we have to wait for the very last moment to be sure what is going on in Canon’s labs. The big question is if Canon will really make a 5d4c beside the 5d4. My guess is they will, though it may have a different moniker.

Sometimes rumours refer to prototypes, and not always sources hit the mark when it comes to specs. Take the T6i and T6s as an example. No one knew about these two Rebels until the very last moment, but some of the specs had already leaked. I got this rumour about a DSLR positioned between the upcoming new Rebel and the 70D, but at the time, and for the following months, there were no rumours suggesting two new Rebels (though bits of the specs surfaced). The rumour about a DSLR positioned below the Canon EOS 70D and above the EOS 750D/Rebel T6i turned out to be real, but we didn’t know which model it would be for long time after we got the rumour.

Stay tuned, the EOS 5D Mark IV is coming and we will soon start to know more.

(CW4) Canon EOS 5D Mark IV coming as 2 versions (5D Mark IV & Mark IVc, 28MP vs 18MP)

canonlogoQuestionMark2
I have been told (thanks) that Canon will announce two versions of the EOS 5D Mark III successor: the EOS 5D Mark IV and the EOS 5D Mark IVc. The former will be a “straight” update to the EOS 5D Mark III, the latter will be more video oriented, and it will feature 4k (while the Mark IV will not).

The source suggests that the 5D Mark IVc will have a lower resolution sensor than the 5D Mark IV, and that some of the technologies featured on Canon’s Cinema cameras will be sported on the 5D Mark IVc. The source also mentioned that the 5D Mark IVc will have the dual-channel readout of the EOS C300 Mark II (this rumor was already floating around the web).

I have some new specs to report. The source stated that the 5D Mark IVc will have

  • 18MP
  • 61 point AF system
  • ISO 100-204.800
  • 4k video (source says Canon has yet to define the frame rate)
  • Dual Pixel AF III
  • Many advanced video features
  • Features taken from Canon’s Cinema cameras

An interesting point: the source stated that Canon has yet to mark the frame rate for 4k video recording on the 5D Mark IVc. Apparently there are some heat issues with the frame rates Canon wants to deliver, which could be due to firmware problems.

The “straight” 5D Mark IV may have the following specs;

  • 28MP sensor
  • 12fps
  • Dual Pixel AF III
  • New and more advanced AF system (compared to EOS 5D Mark III), apparently it will not be the same AF as the 5D Mark IVc (which sounds a bit weird to me)
  • Anti-flickr technology (seen first on the EOS 7D Mark II)
  • Crop mode (featured on the EOS 5Ds)
  • ISO 100-204.800 (expandable to 409.600)

In general, expect many of the technologies Canon unveiled with their latest cameras to be featured on the EOS 5D Mark IV and 5D Mark IVc. Announcement of both cameras is expected between Summer and Fall 2015.

Stay tuned, and let me know what you think….
