Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM Review (best RF kit zoom)

Canon RF 24-105mm F/4-7.1 IS STM Review

Here is a Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM review. The Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 STM is a budget lens for the EOS R system.

It’s good to see that Canon is releasing many budget oriented lenses for the EOS R system. And it’s also good to know that those lenses perform very good, despite not being boutique lenses.

CameraLab’s Gordon Laing posted his Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM review, and he is rather positive on this lens. From his conclusion:

The Canon RF 24-105 f/4-7.1 STM is the budget kit zoom the EOS R system has been waiting for. Sure, it may lack the glamour of the brighter aperture and more exotic models, but every system needs a low-cost general-purpose zoom to bundle with the entry-level bodies as a starting point.

Thankfully modern lens design coupled with in-camera corrections actually makes it a lot better than you’d think, especially for the size, weight and money. In my tests it delivered respectable sharpness across the frame, throughout the range and even with the aperture wide-open. By employing a variable aperture that dims to f7.1 at the long-end, Canon’s been able to keep size, weight and cost down, making it a very practical and attainable option, while the reasonably close focusing increases its flexibility further.

Will Canon Give Up The EOS M Lineup After 2021?

Canon EOS M50 Mark II

Bad news for those who like the EOS M system, myself included. A new rumor suggests Canon might not continue the EOS M lineup after 2021.

The EOS M mirrorless system has already been declared dead many times. Now it seems it might eventually happen. According to the rumor, Canon will end the EOS M lineup in favour of two upcoming RF mount cameras with a APS-C sensor (so far only one EOS R with APS-C was rumored).

It’s also rumored that Canon might not release dedicated RF-S lenses (i.e. lenses for the RF mount but only for APS-C sensors). Instead, future lens design will “fill the void of no dedicated APS-C lenses”. Whatever that means. Guess it means that they are designed to work well for both APS-C and FF EOS R cameras. Sort of compromise? The upcoming RF 18-45mm IS STM might be the walk-around lens for an EOS R camera with APS-C sensor.

There will be EOS M cameras on market after 2021, and the EOS M50 Mark II won’t be the last EOS M camera. Stay tuned.

Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS Review (Canon got it right, D. Abbott)

Canon RF 24-70mm F/2.8L IS Review

Here is a Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS review from our favorite gear reviewer.

Dustin Abbott posted his exhaustive Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS review. As usual with his reviews, it comes with a huge set of sample pictures, test charts, comparisons, and answers basically every question you might have about the RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS. From his conclusion:

It isn’t a perfect lens.  It is expensive ($2299 USD), which will be the chief obstacle to many potentially interested customers.  It’s also a bit heavy and is on the larger side, though the size isn’t unusual for this class of lens.  There’s some barrel distortion at 24mm that is a bit complex, and the vignette is very heavy there as well.  Fortunately both of these can be corrected for, but what the RF 24-70L has that some competitors do not is fantastic image sharpness across the frame even at F2.8.  Add to this excellent autofocus, great stabilization, and fantastic handling, and you’ve got a pro-grade lens worth owning and using for many years.  The Canon RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM was an important lens for Canon to get right, and I think that’s exactly what they’ve done.

Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS at a glance:

  • Standard wide-angle to telephoto zoom lens is designed for use with full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless cameras
  • Bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture maintains consistent illumination throughout the zoom range and suits working in low-light conditions as well as affords increased control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
  • Three UD (Ultra-Low Dispersion) elements help to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing in order to provide greater clarity and color accuracy.
  • Three aspherical elements are used to correct spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
  • An Air Sphere Coating (ASC) has been applied to lens elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for maintained light transmission and high contrast in strong lighting conditions.
  • An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by five stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
  • Nano USM system utilizes both a ring type USM and an STM mechanism to realize quick and accurate focusing that is also smooth and nearly silent to suit both photography and video applications. This focusing system also affords full-time manual focus control when working in the one-shot AF mode.
  • Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
  • Protective fluorine coating has been applied to the front and rear element to resist fingerprints and smudges and to make cleaning these elements significantly easier.
  • As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens has a weather-resistant design that protects against dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions.
  • Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Canon’s High Resolution EOS R5s Might Have 90MP, And With Pixel Shift More Than 300MP

High Resolution Eos R

Some bits of information about the long rumored high resolution EOS R5s (moniker from the community not official)

Canon Rumors reports some high resolution EOS R5s specifications:

– Approxamently 90mp sensor

– “Pixel-shift like feature” to add resolution. Total resolution “north of 300mp”.

– Nearly identical body design as the Canon EOS R5.

– Video features are “NOT a focus” of the Canon EOS R5s.

– Image stabilization will be a “slightly different version” than the current RF mount cameras.

– Pricing will be “similar” to the Canon EOS R5.

– Announcement scheduled for Q1 of 2021

The interesting piece in the list above is the “pixel-shift like feature” which is able to raise the resolution to more than 300MP. This feature might be similar to what is featured on the Fujifulm GFX 100.
