Some More Bits About The Canon EOS R3 Specifications (45MP, Quad-Pixel AF)

Canon Eos R3 Specifications

We already got a few hints about the Canon EOS R3 specifications. Now another source confirmed some of the information we got.

Just to remind you that Canon announced the development of the Canon EOS R3 but said very little about its specifications. Last time we got this list:

  • 45MP image sensor
  • 60 fps full pixel quad-core auto-focus
  • 20 fps mechanical shutter
  • 30 fps electronic shutter
  • New white balance system
  • 8K / 30p RAW shooting

The new suggestion we got confirms the 45MP sensor. The source also added that the EOS R3 will have a pixel-shift feature on board (it was already rumored, and there is also a patent). Pixel-shift would allow to have a higher resolution than the native sensor resolution.

The second feature we got confirmed is Quad-Pixel Autofocus. If you look at the list we got last week, you see “60 fps full pixel quad-core auto-focus”. We think it got somewhat lost in translation: it refers to Quad-Pixel Autofocus, a feature already rumored to come to future EOS R cameras. Several patents have been spotted so far.

So, the new updated Canon EOS R3 specification list:

  • 45MP image sensor with pixel-shift
  • Quad-Pixel Autofocus
  • 60 fps with full Quad-Pixel Auto-focus
  • 20 fps mechanical shutter
  • 30 fps electronic shutter
  • New white balance system
  • 8K / 30p RAW shooting

I am still not entirely sold on the 45MP. Seems a bit high of a resolution for a sports camera. Some ideas?

Stay tuned, stay safe.

P:S:: you can get notified when the Canon EOS R3 will be available for preorder.

This Is The Canon EOS R3 – Development Announcement Coming Soon

Canon Eos R3 Specifications

Update: in the meantime we got a set of Canon EOS R3 specifications.

Here is the Canon mirrorless camera no one saw coming (shame on the rumor mills!): the Canon EOS R3.

Is this the flagship EOS R model? For sure it is an EOS R aimed at professionals. The EOS R3 is the direct competitor to the Nikon Z 9. We expect Canon to announce the development of the Canon EOS R3 very soon, most likely within April 2021.

We think the Canon EOS R3 might be one of the professional EOS R cameras on EOS-1D X level we were expecting. So, no EOS R1? Or will the Canon EOS R1 be even more pro-oriented? The EOS R3 has the ergonomics and the vertical grip of the EOS 1D lineup, and shows all external signs of a professional camera. The EOS R3 might be a professional sports camera, and so let some room for the EOS R1. A professional sport camera would perfectly fit with the Olympics this year. The right lenses are also on their way. We do not think the EOS R3 is the anticipated high resolution EOS R camera. Let me know what you think.

Stay tuned, there is more to come soon.

Another Canon Camera Shows Up For Certification, And It Might Be An EOS R

More Canon gear appears at a certification agency. Based on the internal code-name we assume it’s an EOS R model.

The new camera has the moniker DS12856. Now, we know that Canon gear having internal codes starting with “DS” refer to an interchangable-lens camera. Since we do not expect any new EOS xxxD/Rebel, we might assume it refers to an upcoming EOS R model. Which one is the guess. The most likely candidate so fare seems to be the highly anticipated high resolution EOS R. It might also be the flagship EOS R model, but we are less confident on this one.

Stay tuned.
