There Might Be No New Canon EOS R (high resolution) Camera in 2019 [CW2]

Canon Eos R Firmware Update

There has been some rumoring that Canon might announce a high resolution EOS R camera in 2019. Nikon has one, the Z 7, so it appears to be plain logic that Canon will follow.

Apparently not. Latest rumors reaching us suggest the high resolution EOS R camera will not ship in 2019, and that’s likely to be a 2020 affair.

We’re not sure what to think about this rumor. Canon itself said they will announce six new RF lenses in 2019, most clearly aimed to a high resolution sensor, so it seems a bit strange they would hold back the exactly camera that could exploit those lenses. The rumor suggests Canon might withhold the high res body until CP+ 2020.

Now for the stranger part. Same rumor says a “high end” EOS R will be announced within 2019. A contradictory statement and that’s when we decided to downgrade the rumor to CW2.

Stay tuned.

Canon EOS R DxOMarked, Close To Nikon and Sony but Still Behind

Eos R

The Canon EOS R has been DxOMarked and gets a score of 89.

A DxOMark of 89 puts the Canon EOS R behind the competition, with the Nikon Z 6 scoring a 95 and the Sony a7 III a 96. The EOS R’s score is very close to the one of the EOS 5D Mark IV, which is not surprising since these cameras have very similar image sensors.

From DxOMark’s conclusion:

While not possessing the low noise levels of the Nikon Z 6 and Sony A7 III, which have slightly lower pixel density and BSI architecture in their favor, the EOS R’s sensor is one of Canon’s best. It comes very close to the one used in the pro-level EOS 1Dx Mark II, particularly in its low light, high ISO capabilities.

With a low noise floor, the dynamic range of the Canon 30MP sensor greatly improves over its predecessors. The EOS R is much more capable of handling high-contrast scenes, thus allowing a photographer faced with protecting highlights at capture to lift shadows in post-processing without incurring some of the noise penalties.

With its first model in a new system, Canon has equipped the EOS R with one of its best sensors—and that, together with some very interesting lenses, signals that it’s taking “mirrorless” very seriously.

Canon EOS R With IBIS Is Coming, Canon Exec Says, And EF-M Mount Is Not Dead

Canon Eos R Mark Ii Rumor

Amateur Photographer sat down with Canon execs at CP+ 2019, and the talk was about Canon’s mirrorless full frame EOS R system.

The short interview gives some interesting insights in Canon’s agenda. The EOS M is the mirrorless system with APS-C sensor, Canon confirms. However, when asked if they will make an EOS R with APS-C sensor, the answer is somewhat ambiguous while still confirming that the EF-M mount is the APS-C mirrorless mount. Judge by yourself:

[expander_maker id=”2″ more=”Click to read the article” less=”Read less”]

AP: Are you going to keep EOS M in its existing form, or are you going to make a APS-C camera with the RF mount?

YM: That’s a product development for the future so I can’t go into detail, and the market will dictate what sort of direction we should take. If the customers do want a small size, lightweight mount I believe there is room for that, so as we said […] we will continue to work with the M mount.

When asked about IBIS the answer is more straightforward.

AP: There have been quite a lot of requests from customers and reviewers alike for IBIS on the EOS R, not to mention dual card slots. How do you respond to this?

YM: Yes, we are aware of these voices… We are thinking how we can develop the line-up. With the R and RP we look at the entirety of the package, as mentioned. In terms of IBIS, we are looking into it for the future. We believe IBIS will work together hand in hand with optical IS lenses, such as the ones you see in front of you, to offer better features.

There is more to grasp in the interview at Amateur Photographer.
