Canon’s High Resolution EOS R Camera Gets Another Mention

It was time to stir up rumors for Canon’s next, third mirrorless full frame camera.

We expect Canon to announce a high resolution mirrorless full frame camera, something our sources suggest since a while. There are little doubts that Canon will announce such a camera in 2019.

More uncertain are the specifications for this camera. Rumor has it that the Canon’s high resolution mirrorless full frame camera might have a 70MP sensor and even IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation). That’s a lot. Take this with a grain of salt.

What about the EOS 5Ds and EOS 5Ds R? Suggestions that Canon might ditch the EOS 5Ds(R) in favour of a mirrorless offering have been around since a while. Moreover, Nikon already released a high resolution model, so it’s just logic to expect Canon to do the same.

Here is the first firmware update for the Canon EOS RP. Nothing earthshaking, though.

Firmware Version 1.1.0 incorporates the following enhancement:

1. Support for Camera Control API (CCAPI)* function, for software developers, has been added. *HTTP-based API for camera control.

Canon EOS RP Review (more than the sum of its parts, Photography Blog)

Photography Blog reviewed the new Canon EOS RP, the company’s entry level, full frame mirrorless camera.

From their conclusion:

[…] the EOS RP is surprisingly well-built, with the same level as weather-proofing as the popular EOS 80D DSLR, makes more logical design decisions, most notably the removal of the M-Fn bar and the addition of a dedicated shooting mode dial, and has a great 1080p video mode. It also offers fantastic auto-focusing, USB charging and Bluetooth connectivity, all in a very compact and lightweight chassis. And in some ways, the EOS RP even manages to outperform its big brother, the EOS R, most notably by offering Eye AF in both AF-S and AF-C focusing modes, and incorporating Focus Stacking for the first time on any Canon camera.

[…] Ultimately, the new EOS RP camera adds up to a lot more than the sum of its parts, offering full-frame mirrorless image quality at an APS-C price point. While it’s far from being the most technologically advanced camera ever released, Canon’s cunning repackaging of existing tech in a logical design for its target audience could make it one of the best-selling.

Rumor has it that an RF 14-21mm f/1.4L lens for the Canon EOS R system is currently in advanced development stage and will likely be one of a couple of world’s first lenses coming for the RF mount in 2020.

There is an US patent application (2018-0314060) which supports the rumor.

We are usually cautious with rumors about gear which is said to be announced much later, as it is in this case. On the other hand, Canon stated more than one time that the RF mount will allow them to build “world’s first” lenses, hence a RF 14-21mm f/1.4L lens is in the realm of possibilities.
