Next Canon EOS R (high resolution) Model To Be Announced Before Photokina 2019, Most Likely

Canon Eos R

It’s season of the Canon EOS R rumors. A lot of wild speculation are filling our inbox and surfacing allover the web.

While a recent interview with a Canon exec has probably killed most of the potential rumors of the next months, there is still stuff to talk about.

We’ve been told on multiple occasions that Canon has a high resolution EOS R model in development. This was also pretty clearly spoken out by another Canon exec during an interview. The question is when the EOS R high resolution camera will be announced.

Most of the people we have talked to seem to agree that Canon will announced this camera before Photokina 2019 (which happens in May). That makes sense. Photokina is likely the most important event for the photographic industry. Moreover, the fact that Nikon launched a high res model makes it likely Canon will do the same. A mirrorless camera with the same resolution of the EOS 5Ds (R) appears to be a good idea. I guess a lot of photographers would appreciate.

The EOS R system is here to stay, and we can be sure Canon will push it better and stronger than they do with their EOS M system.

Stay tuned.

Steve Huff Switched From Sony To Canon’s EOS R, Here Is Why

Canon Eos R

Well known photographer Steve Huff posted a quite enthusiastic article about the Canon EOS R, and why he switched to it.

I switched to the Canon EOS-R […] and could not be happier. This camera is a gem. Forget the noise created around its release, as it has some Mojo. The EOS-R and EF or RF lenses offers something unique.

As other reviewers pointed out, the EOS R system is made by its outstanding (albeit small) lens ecosystem. The RF 28-70 mm F/2L and especially the RF 50mm F/1.2L are showcasing the optical excellence that can be achieved with Canon’s newly engineered RF mount. And then it’s Canon’s color science, and all the things that make up a Canon camera.

I love this Canon, the color, the control, the new lenses, the ease of use, the video function, touch screen controls, and the swivel screen. The Joystick? I am enjoying this camera without it as I enjoy using my thumb to set the focus point while I shoot. It’s intuitive and natural. I do feel Canon could do a firmware update though to make this process a tad smoother. It can be a tad glitchy at times but all in all, I really enjoy this feature as it allows me to easily select my focus point, in a natural way. They probably should have just put in the joystick to please more of the camera buying audience but they didn’t. Either way this works the same way as a joystick, just takes some getting used to.

Here are some videos Steve Huff posted about his experience with the Canon EOS R. The first video telling the reasons why he left Sony’s system. More insights and a lot of sample photos in his review.

This Reviewer Claims Canon Got It Quite Right With the EOS R

Canon Eos R With Aps-c

Johannes of De.Light Photo got a Canon EOS R, and is very fond of it.

In the conclusion he writes:

Wow, what a camera… It delivers all what I expected to get. Using the EOS M5 since almost 2 years as my main travel camera I knew that Canon is delivering great gear on the mirrorless side as well. Therefore the R is definitely the next level for my “always with me travel camera”! The great thing is that it delivers those features which I missed mostly on the M5: Better low light performance and more bokeh and that’s just related to sensor size. And weather sealing. But unfortunately the first RF-mount lens to come will be the 35mm f1.8 – and this one comes without weather sealing.

The EOS-R is a remarkable camera. It can be a work horse for all “normal” needs – and I believe for working professionals as well. I would think it will become a […] camera for travel photographers, who do want to be a bit more discrete and [want] to carry less.

For many topics which are critizised in the online community there are workarounds or solutions built in which are made pretty awesome. But you have to figure them out and maybe to learn how to use them.

Johannes’ review comes with a lot of sample photos. The EOS R as “always with me travel camera” convinces me a lot. I bought the EOS M3 for the same reason.

Here Is Another Canon EOS R Real World Review (by FroKnowsPhoto)

Canon Eos R With Aps-c

Jared Polin (aka FroKnowsPhoto) posted a 50 minutes, real world review of the new Canon EOS R.

He wonders if it’s time to switch to the Sony a7 III, or to get a Canon EOS 6D Mark II instead, or should you get an EOS 5D Mark IV?

Is 4K Video On The Canon EOS R Just Upscaled From 2K?

Eos R

This is what the folks at Camera Conspiracies claim, and they posted a video about it.

Canon faced a lot of criticism for how they implemented 4K video on the Canon EOS R. But this claim is new, and so far the first we’ve seen it.

What do you think, is this true, is the EOS R’s 4K video nothing more than upscaled 2K?

The “R” In Canon EOS R Stays For “Reimagine”, APS-C Model Not Possible, Canon Exec

Canon Eos R Firmware

DC Watch interviewed Mr. Tsuyoshi Togura, Executive Officer, Canon Inc. Image Communication Division Headquarters.

Its seems the “R” in “Canon EOS R” doesn’t stay for “Revolution”, as was suggested during the Hawaii announcement. It means “Reimagine” followed by “Optical excellence”. At least this is what Mr. Tsuyoshi Togura said in the interview when asked about the “R”. I don’t think the machine translation can get it that wrong.

Machine translated excerpt from the interview:

[when asked about the meaning of “R” in EOS R]

Mr. Tsuyoshi Togura: The development concept word for this new system is “Reimagine optical excellence.” The letter “R” took the first letter of its first word “Reimagine”. However, in the development stage, various words such as “Revert”, “Reborn”, etc. with “R” flickered with the meaning of “redefining” EOS again “to reactivate”. As a result, we have developed the concept of “Reimagine optical excellence.” And decided to use “R” for both product name and system name. I felt that I could put down the feelings of the development team well.

About the advantages of the new RF mount, Mr. Tsuyoshi Togura says that the RF 28-70 mm F/2L and RF 50mm F/1.2L lenses would have been difficult to make for the EF mount because of the resulting size and weight. The RF 28-70 mm F/2L and especially the RF 50mm F/1.2L are the lenses to showcase the capabilities of the system. Mr Togura compares the latter to the Canon EF 50mm f/1.0, which had a comparable role for the EF mount when it was introduced.

And how do the EOS M and the EOS R relate to each other? From the answer we understand that the EOS M system has its own role on Canon’s agenda, and that the EOS R can not be adapted to APS-C format:

Since EOS R is a full-size system, it can not be downsized to EOS M size. EOS M has a role / existence value as an APS-C system.

Here again we think not much could have been get lost in (machine) translation. EOS M system is Canon’s APS-C mirrorless system, EOS R is the full frame system. No intersection, no EOS R with APS-C sensor, as some rumors suggested.

Read the interview here.

Another interview, a very interesting one, is here.
