Canon vs Sony vs Fuji vs Nikon: Continuous 4K Video Shooting With Eye AF

Eye Af

Geek alert! A Canon vs Sony vs Fuji vs Nikon shootout on Eye AF performance.

Here is a 22 minutes video where Hidema Nakajima compares the Eye AF of various mirrorless cameras. To be more precise, he compares the Eye AF performance while shooting 4K video. The compared cameras are the Canon EOS R, Nikon Z 6, Sony a9, and Fujifilm X-T3.

Canon released firmware updates for the Canon EOS R and EOS RP that dramatically improved AF performance. More Canon EOS R Eye AF comparison reviews are here and here.

Canon Seems To Be Lagging In Mirrorless Camera Sales 2018

Japanese Site Toyokeizai Published Some Statistics On The Mirrorless Camera Market In 2018. The Data Comes From Techno System Research,

Japanese site Toyokeizai published some statistics on the mirrorless camera market in 2018. The data comes from Techno System Research, a private marketing research company.

There is nothing really new here. Sony is the top dog in mirrorless sales, followed by Canon and the rest of the pack.

  • Sony 42.5%
  • Canon 19.8%
  • Fujifilm 17.5%
  • Olympus 8.4%
  • Panasonic 7.0%
  • Nikon 4.6%

A note of caution. I was not able to understand for sure if the used data refers to the Japanese market or to the global market, though I tend to believe it’s the latter.

Given that we are almost in 2020 I wonder if these stats really matter.

Nikon releases the DX-format Nikon Z 50

Experience the superior rendering capabilities and rich power of expression of the Nikon Z mount system in a compact and lightweight body

TOKYO – Nikon Corporation (Nikon) is pleased to announce the release of the APS-C size (Nikon DX-format) Nikon Z 50 mirrorless camera, as well as NIKKOR Z DX lenses.

Details regarding the NIKKOR Z DX lenses can be found in the following press release, issued today:

The Z 50 is Nikon’s first DX-format mirrorless camera. It inherits its design and operability, reliability, and future possibilities as a mirrorless system from the Nikon Z 7 and Nikon Z 6, further improving on those characteristics and condensing them into a compact, lightweight, and durable body capable of superior rendering capabilities and rich power of expression. It is equipped with the Z mount, which is compatible with both the NIKKOR Z DX and NIKKOR Z FX, ensuring support for all NIKKOR Z lenses and allowing users to enjoy great variety in imaging expression.

The Z 50 has an effective pixel count of 20.9 megapixels, and is the first Nikon DX-format camera to be equipped with a CMOS sensor that incorporates focal-plane phase-detection AF pixels. Adoption of this image sensor, along with the EXPEED 6 image-processing engine, has made a broad range of standard ISO sensitivities — ISO 100-51200*1 — possible for superior image quality with very little noise throughout that range. The camera is also equipped with features such as mid-range sharpening and Creative Picture Control, enabling support for creative imaging expression equivalent to that offered by the Z 7 and Z 6. When NIKKOR Z lenses are used, the Z 50 demonstrates superior resolution and rendering capabilities with both recording of still images, and videos.

Nikon, Leica And Olympus Will Not Attend Photokina 2020

Photokina 2020 Coronavirus

Well, this comes as a surprise. A big player like Nikon not going to attend Photokina 2020?

That’s what a Photokina 2020 press release unveils (emphasis mine):

“We look forward to strong demand and applications from both the new and the classic segments of companies like Canon, CEWE, GoPro, Sony, Panasonic, Kodak Alaris, Sigma, Tamron, Carl Zeiss, Hasselblad, Hahnemühle, Arri, Rode Mikrophones, DJI and Insta360”, says Christoph Werner, Vice President of Koelnmesse. These are contrasted by cancellations, including from Leica, Nikon and Olympus.

It’s not just Nikon to let us puzzled. Leica is a traditional German camera manufacturer and maybe it is even weirder that they do not partecipate to Photokina 2020. Wonder if there are more, untold reasons that motivated Nikon, Leica and Olympus to not attend Photokina 2020.
