A New Pancake Lens is Coming, the ExperimentalOptics 35mm f/2.7 for FF Cameras

Experimentaloptics 35mm F/2.8

A new lens got a funding campaign at Kickstarter. The ExperimentalOptics 35mm f/2.7 full frame pancake lens claims to the “Smallest Fastest Pancake Lens in the World”.

About the mount type they say “the lens has a clever combined Leica M and M39 mount to make it universally adaptable to virtually any camera (apart from SLRs), especially any mirrorless present or future“. So not Canon DSLRs, but hopefully it will work with the Canon EOS R.

The ExperimentalOptics 35mm f/2.7 full frame pancake lens, 7mm thin, 40g light, stealth, sturdy and razor sharp. This is not just an engineering achievement, it is truly the perfect lens for photographers: it puts the least amount of glass and kit between you and your world. It’s a joy to handle and operate, a beautifully crafted object in itself, and creates absolutely stunning results. Our careful choice of focal length, aperture, design and handling allow photographers to capture the world exactly as they see it and truly express their creative vision.

This is not a toy lens. It is a special piece of equipment for professionals, aficionados and connoisseurs. We spent more than two years developing and testing it, and now it’s ready. Almost, that is, because it still needs to be produced… To bring this unique, uncompromising project to life, we’ve gone on kickstarter.

It all will be handmade and, as a result, in very limited quantities only. We expect to ship a first batch of 20 lenses in 2018 and a second batch of another 20 lenses in 2019. That should make this not only the tiniest, but also one of the rarest lenses in the world.

Is a 35mm f/1.8 STM lens for EOS M coming ahead of Photokina 2018?

canon rumorscanon rumors

We have been told (thanks) that Canon may eventually announce the long rumored 35mm f/1.8 STM lens later this year.

We got similar tips in the past (here), and the last time we heard something about such a lens was one year ago. Last week this very rumor got new life. Now we got another hint. Not much to be honest.

Canon might announce an EF-M 35mm f/1.8 STM lens later in 2018, possibly ahead of Photokina 2018 (starting in September 2018).

While we are confident an EF-M 35mm f/1.8 STM lens may indeed be in the works, we are also getting a bit skeptical with rumors about this lens. Since this is a long running rumor, a bit of skepticism isn’t wrong.

It’s getting weird with the EF-M lens line-up. Canon made some powerful mirrorless cameras (and is about to announce the next one) but still fails to deliver outstanding native lenses. It’s true that on Canon MILCs with Dual Pixel AF you can use most of the EF and EF-S lenses. Never the less, having native lenses would make a huge difference.

Old “35mm lens for EOS M” rumor gets new life

Canon EF-M 32mm F/1.4 STM EF-M 22mm Canon Lenses

New EF-M lenses are rumored since a while, and in the past we got a few suggestions it could be a 35mm prime lens, the first time in May 2016.  The last time we heard something in this direction was one year ago.

The suggestion of a fast, 35mm lens (re-)surfaced on the web. It’s suggested it may be either f/1.4 or f/1.8. We have always been told it would be a 35mm f/1.8 lens.

However, we think (have been told) there will indeed be new EF-M lenses in 2018. A fast 35mm prime lens would be a wonderful addition to the native EOS M lens line-up.

Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM reviewed by Photography Blog

35mm F/2.8 Macro

Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM at a glance:

  • Standard macro prime designed for APS-C-format Canon DSLRs, this lens offers a 56mm equivalent focal length.
  • One glass-molded aspherical element is featured in the optical design to control spherical aberrations and deliver a high degree of sharpness and clarity.
  • Maximum 1:1 magnification and a minimum focusing distance of 5.1″ permits making life-size imagery of close-up subjects.
  • Built-in front-facing Macro Lite LED can be used to produce additional illumination to subjects when working at close distances. The light can be configured to illuminate only the right or left side, or both sides, and the brightness can be adjusted in order to produce greater visual depth and reduce shadows caused by the close proximity of the lens to the subject.
  • Hybrid IS image stabilization minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld.
  • Lead-screw-type STM stepping motor offers fast, quiet, smooth, and accurate autofocus performance that is ideal for video recording as well as still shooting.
  • Full-time manual focus mode (AF+MF) lets you instantly switch to manual focus control in AF mode for making fine-tuned adjustments.
  • Rounded seven-blade diaphragm and bright f/2.8 maximum aperture help to render smooth and pleasing bokeh to benefit shallow depth of field imagery.

One of the less talked about recent Canon lenses, the Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM, got reviewed by Photography Blog. It’s a relatively inexpensive lens, it sells for $349 at Amazon US, and it seems it delivers for the bucks.

From the conclusion:

With a 35mm focal length giving you an equivalent of 56mm, it doubles up as an every day or walk around lens, giving you extra flexibility. Those who have a keen interest in macro photography will of course be particularly drawn towards it though.

The addition of the inbuilt macro lights is great news for anybody who likes to shoot extremely closely, and certain subjects, such as jewellery really benefit from the direct source of light. Certainly, anybody who needs to regularly shoot product photography may find this lens to be particularly useful.

Image quality is excellent, producing very sharp images with a high level of detail, as you would expect from a macro lens. Out of focus areas are also rendered very nicely, with attractive bokeh which would make this lens ideal for creating shallow depth of field shots – portraits would also be a good subject to shoot with it.
