Canon Shows Official 8K Video Footage Shot With New Cinema Cameras

8k Video

Canon posted a video with the first 8K video footage shot with the company’s new 8K camcorder.

Press release:

Canon and Miyazaki Prefecture collaborate on ultra-high-resolution 8K video “Origins of Japan’s Mythology”

Canon, in cooperation with Miyazaki Prefecture, has produced a new, ultra-high-resolution 8K video highlighting some of the prefecture’s most iconic sightseeing locations and cultural elements. The project, entitled “Origins of Japan’s Mythology,” aims to promote tourism to Miyazaki and to preserve its natural beauty and cultural heritage. Using a Canon 8K camera equipped with the Company’s rich lineup of EF Cinema Lenses covering the full range from wide-angle to telephoto, this video features such scenes as Takachiho Shrine and ritual Kagura dancing, Amanoyasugawara cave and sake making at a brewery in the town of Hinokage. Watch the video and experience the majesty of Miyazaki in exquisite detail!

Sharing his thoughts on capturing Miyazaki with 8K equipment, director of “Origins of Japan’s Mythology” and CEO of Full score Co., Ltd. Ichiro Shimada said,

“Of the six days we spent filming, we only had clear skies for one. But we were still able to capture the full range of Miyazaki’s graceful beauty in 8K, from Amanoyasugawara cave against the backdrop of faint rain to droplets forming outside Amanoiwato. Then on the final day, the sun finally emerged and we witnessed a miraculous sea of clouds from our vantage point at Kunimigaoka. The sublime sight of gentle drifting clouds and the soft glow of the sun is enough to take your breath away, and I feel we fully captured this in our 8K content.

“Canon’s 8K technology not delivers not only extremely high resolution, but also high dynamic range and rich color expression. And with the ability to record in 8K RAW, we could represent our subjects with more true-to-life visuals. Finally, thanks to the ease of scaling our existing 4K equipment to accommodate our workflow, we were able to film without any trouble. I hope our work will allow even more people to experience the beautiful scenery of Miyazaki.”

Canon’s 8K Technologies

Canon is leveraging its proprietary optical and image-processing technologies to develop a full lineup of 8K equipment spanning input to output, including cameras, lenses and displays. The 8K camera used to record this content is equipped with a Canon-developed 8K image sensor that realizes ultra-high resolution of 8192 x 4320 pixels—16x that of 2K—high-precision HDR and a wide color gamut. All of this makes possible the capture of footage with quality, presence and immersion that’s like seeing with the naked eye. In addition to hardware, Canon is pursuing development of such fully immersive experiences as the Free Viewpoint Video System, which gives viewers the feeling of watching an event in person. Going forward, Canon will continue striving to develop and deliver new visual solutions and experiences.

Canon EOS R With IBIS Is Coming, Canon Exec Says, And EF-M Mount Is Not Dead

Canon Eos R Mark Ii Rumor

Amateur Photographer sat down with Canon execs at CP+ 2019, and the talk was about Canon’s mirrorless full frame EOS R system.

The short interview gives some interesting insights in Canon’s agenda. The EOS M is the mirrorless system with APS-C sensor, Canon confirms. However, when asked if they will make an EOS R with APS-C sensor, the answer is somewhat ambiguous while still confirming that the EF-M mount is the APS-C mirrorless mount. Judge by yourself:

[expander_maker id=”2″ more=”Click to read the article” less=”Read less”]

AP: Are you going to keep EOS M in its existing form, or are you going to make a APS-C camera with the RF mount?

YM: That’s a product development for the future so I can’t go into detail, and the market will dictate what sort of direction we should take. If the customers do want a small size, lightweight mount I believe there is room for that, so as we said […] we will continue to work with the M mount.

When asked about IBIS the answer is more straightforward.

AP: There have been quite a lot of requests from customers and reviewers alike for IBIS on the EOS R, not to mention dual card slots. How do you respond to this?

YM: Yes, we are aware of these voices… We are thinking how we can develop the line-up. With the R and RP we look at the entirety of the package, as mentioned. In terms of IBIS, we are looking into it for the future. We believe IBIS will work together hand in hand with optical IS lenses, such as the ones you see in front of you, to offer better features.

There is more to grasp in the interview at Amateur Photographer.

Canon Working On Global Shutter Sensor With Dual Memory Pixels, Research Paper

Global Shutter

Canon published a research paper in the Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, named “A 3.4 μm pixel pitch global shutter CMOS image sensor with dual in-pixel charge domain memory” (by Masahiro Kobayashi, Hiroshi Sekine, Takafumi Miki, Takashi Muto, Toshiki Tsuboi, Yusuke Onuki, Yasushi Matsuno, Hidekazu Takahashi, Takeshi Ichikawa, and Shunpike Inoue).

From the paper’s abstract:

[expander_maker id=”2″ more=”Click to read the article” less=”Read less”]

In this paper, we describe a newly developed 3.4 μm pixel pitch global shutter CMOS image sensor (CIS) with dual in-pixel charge domain memories (CDMEMs) has about 5.3 M effective pixels and achieves 19 ke− full well capacity, 30 ke−/lxcenterdots sensitivity, 2.8 e- rms temporal noise, and −83 dB parasitic light sensitivity. In particular, we describe the sensor structure for improving the sensitivity and detail of the readout procedure. Furthermore, this image sensor realizes various readout with dual CDMEMs. For example, an alternate multiple-accumulation high dynamic range readout procedure achieves 60 fps operation and over 110 dB dynamic range in one-frame operation and is suitable in particular for moving object capturing. This front-side-illuminated CIS is fabricated in a 130 nm 1P4M with light shield CMOS process.

Skylum introduces AirMagic, AI-powered photo editing software for aerial photography

Utilizing Artificial Intelligence, AirMagic gives drone and aerial photographers an automated solution to improve their images.

BELLEVUE, WA – March 7, 2019 — Today, Skylum announced AirMagic, the world’s first fully automated AI-powered enhancer for Mac & PC, created for drone and aerial photography.

While drones let us shoot incredible images from previously unreachable places, the photos themselves often lack quality, making for a lot of manual post-processing work to fix issues like haze, low or extreme contrast, lack of sharpness, undersaturation and chromatic aberration. This tedious editing process requires time, special knowledge and expensive software.

With AirMagic, these problems are a thing of the past. AirMagic was created to automatically resolve issues inherent to aerial photography. It lets photographers process their images without major involvement — all you need to do is drop all your aerial photos into the app, and AirMagic takes care of the rest to make each photo look its best.
