Canon EOS 5D Mark III Firmware Update Out In The Wild

While new rumors surfaced concerning the firmware updates Canon is going to release soon, there is proof that Canon’s EOS 5D Mark III (price & specs) firmware update is already out in the wild undergoing testing.

The firmware update was seen at the Atomos Ninja booth at NAB 2013 by the guys over at dslrfilnoob:

I was hanging out at the Atomos Ninja booth checking out their new (and beautiful) Samurai Blade when I noticed a 5d mark III on display. I started playing around with the settings and suddenly I had a clean 1080p output. I grabbed one of the Atomos reps and he confirmed that this5d mark III on display was in fact running the yet to be released clean HDMI firmware update.

An Atomos rep said they are testing the firmware since six months.

Rumor: Canon EOS 5D Mark III, EOS-1D X And EOS-1D C Firmware Tidbits

EOS 5D Mark III

New tidbits about upcoming Canon firmware updates surfaced on the web. As you know, Canon is going to release three firmware updates, specifically for the Canon EOS 5D Mark III (price & specs), the Canon EOS-1D X (price & specs) and the Canon EOS-1D C (price & specs).

The firmware for the EOS 5D Mark III should be released by the end of April 2013. This appears to be rather sure.

The firmware for the EOS-1D X will be available in May as it was announced.

The firmware for the EOS-1D C appears to be a little bit more problematic. Canon may make an announcement by the end of April to let us know when the firmware that will deliver the 25p/4k will be released. It is said that there are some issues with the encryption of the firmware, in order to avoid hacking or reverse engineering. The rumored 120fps at 720p mode now is said not to be part of the release version of the firmware. Stability concerns are the reason.

The EOS-1D C is sold for $11,999 at the following shops: B&H and Adorama, and you can rent it here.

Rumor: Canon EOS 5D Mark III Price Set To Be Lowered After April 9?

EOS 5D Mark III Freezing

This news surfaced on the web, on a site I didn’t know before. They suggest that “according to information portals” the price tag of the Canon EOS 5D Mark III (price & specs) will be lowered after April 9th, and that it is related to the announcement of the Canon EOS 7D Mark II, the eagerly awaited successor of the Canon EOS 7D (price & specs). The EOS 7D Mark II is said to have a price tag below $1800.

I am somewhat perplexed, since none of my sources ever told me or can confirm this.

Will The Canon EOS 70D Be Announced On April 23?

EOS 70D

Latest EOS 70D rumors suggest an announcement on April 23 for the successor of the highly popular Canon EOS 60D  (price & specs).

It appears that Canon sent out invites for a press event on April 23, though there is nothing official yet. The only additional information we have is that the new sensor featured on the Canon Rebel SL1/EOS 100D could be featured also on the Canon EOS 70D. An announcement at the end of April is plausible.

Rumor: Canon EOS-1D C Firmware Update Problems

EOS-1D C Firmware Update

Just some days ago a screenshot of the upcoming firmware update for the Canon EOS-1D C showed up. We reported that the firmware update is undergoing field-testing. I have also been told that the firmware update for the EOS-1D C is set to be released immediately after NAB 2013.

Now it appears that there are some issues with the release candidate of the firmware update. The issues are said to be related to the use of external HDMI recorders: users have reported corrupted frames when externally recording the uncompressed output signal taken from the HDMI port.

There is no exact information about when the firmware update should be released, but it is expected for late April or beginning of May.

The EOS-1D C is sold for $11,999 at the following shops: B&H and Adorama, and you can rent it here.

Next Canon EOS 7D Mark II Specification List

EOS 7D Mark II

DigitalRev published an article where they compare the Nikon D7100 to the upcoming Canon EOS 7D Mark II, the successor of the highly popular Canon EOS 7D (price & specs). While discussing the features and more of both DSLRs, they also posted a list of supposed specs of the EOS 7D Mark II taken “from various sources in the know, (a.k.a. employees working in Japan who can’t keep their mouths shut)“. The specs are a bit different from the specs we published some days ago. Here they are:

  • 24.1 megapixel APS-C sensor
  • New 61 point AutoFocus system
  • Larger 3.2” screen with 100% coverage
  • Dual DIGIC V processors
  • 10 fps continuous shooting
  • Dual Memory Card slots
  • ISO and build quality close to the 5D Mark III
  • GPS and Wi-Fi built in
  • Around US$2,200

Still sounds plausible, maybe even more than the previously reported specs.
