Canon Dominates The Mirrorless Market In Japan (in Q1 2022)

Canon appears to be the undisputed mirrorless market leader in Japan. That’s what the latest BCN report suggests.

According to the aggregate data from January 1st to March 30th, 2022, Canon ranks in the first three positions of mirrorless market shares in Japan:

  1. Canon EOS Kiss M2 Double Zoom Kit White
  2. Canon EOS Kiss M2 Double Zoom Kit Black
  3. Canon EOS RP / RF24-105 IS STM Lens Kit
  4. Sony α6100 Double Zoom Lens Kit Black
  5. Sony α7 IV
  6. OLYMPUS PEN E-PL10 EZ Double Zoom Kit White
  7. EOS Kiss M Double Zoom Kit White
  8. Sony α6400 Double Zoom Lens Kit Silver
  9. Nikon Z 50 Double Zoom Kit
  10. LUMIX G100 Standard Zoom Lens Tripod Grip Included

Note that the first two positions are hold by the Canon EOS M5 Mark II (named EOS Kiss M2 in Japan), a camera (and line-up) that some people can’t wait to see disappear. Nope, me says. Even the upcoming release of the EOS R7 and EOS R10 won’t mean that the EOS M system will disappear any time soon.

Besides us having been utterly wrong, it seems now ascertained that Canon will soon announce two EOS R models with APS-C sensor: the Canon EOS R7 and Canon EOS R10.

The Canon EOS R7 and Canon EOS R10 are very clearly the replacements for the Canon EOS 7D Mark II and Canon EOS 90D, respectively. Both lineups, the xD and xxD series, made Canon glory in the APS-C imaging sensor realm. We have no doubts that the EOS R7 and EOS R10 will continue the legacy.

We expect both the Canon EOS R7 and Canon EOS R10 to get announced along with some RF-S lenses on May 24, 2022, as we posted first. Here are the rumored specifications for the EOS R7 and EOS R10:

Canon EOS R10 specifications:

  • 24.2MP
  • 15-23 fps (Mechanical/Electronic)
  • 1x UHS-II
  • HDR PQ

Canon EOS R7 specifications:

  • 32.5mp APS-C Dual Pixel CMOS AF
  • 15-30fps (mechanical/electronic)

The Canon EOS R10 seems to be Canon’s entry level EOS R camera with an APS-C image sensor. Here are some possible Canon EOS R10 specifications:

We got a tip from a very good source. Canon will make an announcement on May 24, 2022.

At this point we have no doubts it will be for the Canon EOS R7 and Canon EOS R10, and for a bunch of RF-S lenses.

It seems we were utterly wrong about the EOS R7. Not only now it seems ascertained that Canon will release an EOS R model with APS-C sensor, but there is more we can expect.

Latest, reliable rumors from Japan suggest that Canon is set to announce a bunch of new gear, all related to APS-C imaging sensor. This is the list:

  • EOS R7 body
  • EOS R7 18-150mm Kit
  • EOS R10 body
  • EOS R10 18-45mm Kit
  • EOS R10 18-150mm Kit
  • RF-S 18-45mm IS
  • RF-S 18-150mm

So, it seems we will soon see not one but two EOS R models with an APS-C imaging sensor.

It seems the Canon EOS R7 is coming. I still have a hard time buying it, but I might well be wrong.

Born again Canon Rumors posted a set of alleged Canon EOS R7 specifications. They seem to be pretty confident it is the real thing. Here they are:

  • 32.5mp APS-C Dual Pixel CMOS AF
  • 15-30fps (mechanical/electronic)
  • 2x UHS-II supported
  • 4K @ 60/50fps (NTSC/PAL)
  • 1080p @ 120/100fps (NTSC/PAL)
  • C-Log 3/HDR PQ
  • In-Body IS
  • Announcement in June/July 2022

The EOS R7 (moniker invented by the community) would be a mirrorless camera with an APS-C imaging sensor and the RF mount. Along with the set of specification comes the years old suggestion that the Canon EOS M system is dead. We will see. Time will tell. Any ideas about the topic are welcome.
