Canon Patent: RF 20mm f/1.8, RF 24mm f/1.8, RF 28mm f/1.8 Lenses

Canon Patent

A new Canon patent application, once more for RF mount lenses.

Canon patent application 2022-20096 (Japan) discusses optical formulas for a bunch of RF mount lenses: RF 20mm f/1.8, RF 24mm f/1.8, RF 28mm f/1.8.

From the patent literature:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical system having good optical performance, easy to manufacture and compact. However, when the optical system of Patent Document 1 is widened, the off-axis aberration increases as the angle of view increases. In order to satisfactorily correct the increased off-axis aberration, it is necessary to arrange a lens having a large diameter in the front group, which is the focus group, on the object side, which leads to an increase in the size of the optical system. Furthermore, since the mass of the focus group also increases, a high-output actuator is required when performing autofocus, which may lead to an increase in the size of the actuator. An object of the present invention is to provide an optical system having good optical performance, easy to manufacture, and a small size, and a lens device and an image pickup device having the same.

Example 1

  • Focal length: 28.60
  • F value: 1.85
  • Half angle of view: 37.1
  • Image height: 20.15
  • Overall length: 81.00
  • Back focus: 13.20

Example 2

  • Focal length: 20.60
  • F value: 1.85
  • Half angle of view: 46.4
  • Image height: 18.71
  • Overall length: 84.87
  • Back focus: 11.00

Example 3

  • Focal length: 24.72
  • F value: 1.85
  • Half angle of view: 41.2
  • Image height: 19.34
  • Overall length: 81.00
  • Back focus: 11.00

These Might Be The Specifications Of One Of Canon’s Next Cinema Cameras (EOS C5?)

We got a rumor from an unknown source. We report it as it is out of duty. Please take it with a grain of salt. Is a Canon EOS C5 coming?

We got tipped about a new, upcoming mirrorless Canon Cinema camera. A Cinema camera that seems to be closely related to the EOS R5/EOS R5 C. This is what we got:

  • The camera is a combination of the EOS R5 C and EOS C300 III, similar in appearance to the EOS R5 C, but more square, with the electric ND filter of the EOS C300 III, the professional interface of the EOS C70, and an extended battery compartment.
  • Its XF-AVC recording format is the same as the EOS C70, but it uses a modified version of the EOS R5 C’s CMOS sensor with a total of 22.5 megapixels.
  • With a sampling resolution of 8192×2160, it is capable of perfect oversampling to 4K 120fps, making it Canon’s current 4K 120fps product with the best image quality.
  • When the frame rate is reduced to 72fps or less, DGO mode is turned on to provide higher dynamic range.
  • Unlike the current EOS C70, it does not offer RAW recording for now.
  • Full pixel QPAF, and RAW internal recording in subsequent firmware.
  • In terms of photography, it no longer offers a mechanical shutter and is replaced by in-body stabilization.

The source suggested the moniker “Canon EOS C5“. Again, don’t forget the grain of salt. Please let me know what you think about this rumor. Anything to take seriously?

Three New Canon EOS R Cameras, Including APS-C, Coming In 2022?

Eos R Model With Aps-c

What a timing! Just a day after a patent was spotted that might point to an Canon EOS R model with APS-C sensor, a new rumor surfaces that suggests exactly that. Man I love this industry! :-)

Rumor has it that Canon might be set to release three new EOS R cameras. So, what are these cameras? One might be the already mentioned EOS R model with an APS-C sensor, said to be “maybe a little M50 mixed with some 7D“. Whatever that means. The “maybe” part sees use a bit skeptical.

Next, there might be a new entry level full-frame EOS R model in the pipeline. This camera is said to use the imaging sensor of the EOS R6. Just above this camera, there might be another EOS R model with “new image sensor, but a lower pixel count than the Canon EOS R5

Finally, the same source suggests that at least one of the three mentioned new EOS R models might come without an Electronic Viewfinder (EVF). This might concern the most entry level of these cameras.

Time will tell, stay tuned.

Canon Financial Results 2021 Published – Company Doing Well, Expects Growth In Profits

Canon Financial Results

Canon published the financial results for 2021. Not only Canon is doing well, they also expect a growth in profits.

The imaging sector is also doing rather good.

In 2020, cameras, which are a core component of the imaging group, saw significant decline in unit sales due to the impact of COVID-19. As a result, we posted a temporary decline in the profitability of this group. However, profitability recovered to a normal double-digit level in 2021.

Cameras are not the only component of our imaging business. It also covers a wider range of businesses, including the input of visual information using lenses and sensors, and also the provision of solutions utilizing this input. In order to further expand our business in the future, we will not only expand sales of network cameras, but also leverage the optical technology we have cultivated over the years and actively invest in the development of new businesses such as automotive sensors and XR.

As for camera demand, despite concerns that it would shrink significantly due to the pandemic, demand remained relatively strong. This reflects a number of factors, including an increase in the number of people using their extra leisure time to capture videos and photos in the home and disseminating them online, and the impact made by new full-frame mirrorless cameras released by each company.

As for the size of the market in 2021, although it shrank by 200 thousand units, due to the insufficient supply of products by each company, it was still 5.4 million units.

Our unit sales in 2021 totaled 2.74 million units, 20 thousand units fewer than in 2020, also due to the insufficient supply of products, particularly entry-class cameras. However, for the EOS R5 and EOS R6, sales volumes and price levels remained stable, despite them being in the market for more than a year. Additionally, unit sales of our RF lens lineup, which was expanded to 26 lenses through the addition of 8 new products, increased substantially, thanks to their synergy with cameras.

We have been expanding our core product lineup by increasing the number of highly profitable EOS R systems over the years. As a result, the sustained profitability of the camera business has increased significantly, resulting in an overall 25% increase in camera sales and a significant improvement in profitability in 2021.

In 2022, the size of the camera market is expected to be 5.65 million units, a 5% increase over 2021, which takes into account thecarryover from 2021 due to supply shortages.

In order to capture the growing need for high-quality image expression, we will continue to further strengthen the cameras and the RF lenses of the EOS R system.

Earlier this month, we introduced the EOS R5 C, a hybrid cinema camera, to further capture growing demand for video. The EOS R5 C is an easy to carry around compact and lightweight model that offers further enhancement in video performance over the EOS R5, enabling long-time shooting of high-quality images at 8K and 60 frames per second.

As for RF lenses, we will work to increase unit sales of our lineup, which currently consists of 26 models, through further synergy with cameras.

Can The Canon EOS R3 Noise Reduction Not Been Turned Off?

Canon Eos R3

It seems the noise reduction on the Canon EOS R3 can not be turned off.

Based on sensor data collected by Photons to Photos, asobinet.com suggests the noise reduction on the Canon EOS R3 can not be turned off. They compared sensor data form the Leica M11 vs the Canon EOS R3. The image below is for the Leica M11, the image on top refers to the Canon EOS R3. Both images show the energy spectrum at all ISO settings. You can clearly see that the M11 sensor data is flat while the sensor data for the EOS R3 shows some prominent signal processing applied. According to asobinet, the signal processing is noise reduction.
