Canon EOS R6 Announcement Postponed To July 2020?

canon eos r6 rumor

A new Canon EOS R6 rumor surfaced, suggesting the announcement might be postponed to July 2020.

So far, despite rumors suggesting possible shipping delays, the announcement was expected for May 2020. But maybe that’s not the case. Latest rumor suggests July 2020 as announcement date. The source does not mention if this delay has to do with the COVID-19 pandemic, but we guess it has.

With the announcement getting delayed, the EOS R6 will not begin shipping before August or September 2020. Very unlikely earlier.

These are the rumored Canon EOS R6 specifications:

  • 20mp full-frame CMOS sensor
  • IBIS
  • 12fps mechanical and 20fps electronic.
  • 4K @ 60p
  • FullHD @ 120p
  • Dual card slots
  • No top-down screen
  • Lower resolution EVF than the EOS R5
  • Build quality not as good as the EOS R5
  • New battery (Not sure if it’s the same as the EOS R5)
  • July 2020 launch

Canon And Other Companies Free Patent Rights To Fight COVID-19 Pandemic

coronavirus covid-19 ransomware Chipmaking

Canon, Toyota, and other Japanese companies are freeing their patents in a common effort to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nikkei Asian Review reports:

TOKYO — About 20 Japanese companies, including Toyota Motor and Canon, will release patents and other intellectual property held in Japan and overseas for free to help fight the new coronavirus, Nikkei has learned.

The goal is to make it easier for businesses and research organizations to develop medical devices as well as testing and treatment technologies. The hope is that it will lead to a faster resolution of the crisis, which threatens to seriously affect the global economy.

The idea was initially proposed by Professor Fumihiko Matsuda, head of the Center for Genomic Medicine at the Graduate School of Medicine at Kyoto University. Nissan Motor, Honda Motor, Shimadzu, Ajinomoto Group and Tokyo-based SRL, a member of the Miraca Group, will also participate.

Canon patent applications are something we cover extensively.

These Could Be The EOS R Cameras To Be Announced In 2021

eos r canon cameras

While we are still waiting for the Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6, it’s nice to see some speculations on Canon’s 2021 EOS R cameras system roadmap.

A new rumor tries to shed some light on what kind of EOS R cameras we can expect to see in 2021. The source states that at least two cameras are in the pipelines and already have “internal names”. No specifications have been suggested.

Two new EOS R cameras in 2021, but what kind of EOS R cameras? Enter speculation room and let’s have a look to possible scenarios, ranked from less likely to most likely (in our opinion):

  • One of these two new R bodies might be the EOS R Mark II. However, it’s possible Canon will not release an EOS R Mark II and that the EOS R6 takes the place as replacement for the original EOS R.
  • One of these two new R bodies might be a EOS R1, i.e. a top tier EOS R body which also is rumored since long. But is there already room in 2021 for such a camera after the EOS R5 is released in 2020?
  • One of these two new R bodies might be the replacement for the EOS RP, already dubbed EOS R9 by the intertwined rumor mills network. So, a new entry-level EOS R body
  • One of these two new R bodies might be a high resolution EOS R model, maybe even a high megapixel version of the EOS R5. Canon did it with the EOS 5D lineup introducing the EOS 5Ds and EOS 5Ds R. So, it’s not only possible but the most reliable speculation.

We root for the last two, and think they are what Canon might release in 2021. What do you think?
