Today a bunch of Canon firmware updates was released for mirrorless cameras. Not much to write home about, besides the support for the RF-S 10-18mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM lens.

Canon EOS R50 firmware version 1.1.0 (download) incorporates the following fixes and enhancements:

  1. Adds support for RF-S 10-18mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM lens.
  2. Adds support for the Software Development Assistance Kit (EDSDK/CCAPI).
  3. Fixes minor issues.

Canon EOS R10 firmware version 1.4.0 (download) incorporates the following fixes and enhancements:

  1. Adds support for RF-S 10-18mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM lens.
  2. Fixes minor issues.

Canon EOS R6 firmware version 1.8.3 (download) incorporates the following fixes and enhancements:

  1. Fixes an issue, in which, after touchscreen operation, in rare circumstances, the camera operations cannot be performed, and even if the camera is operated, [BUSY] appears on the screen.
  2. Fixes minor issues.

Canon EOS R7 firmware version 1.4.0 (download) incorporates the following fixes and enhancements:

  1. Adds support for RF-S 10-18mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM lens.
  2. Fixes minor issues.

Canon EOS R8 firmware version 1.2.0 (download) incorporates the following fixes and enhancements:

  1. Adds support for RF-S 10-18mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM lens.
  2. Fixes minor issues.

Canon EOS R3 firmware version 1.5.1 (download) incorporates the following fixes and enhancements:

  1. Adds support for RF-S 10-18mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM lens.
  2. Fixes an issue that may cause the camera, in rare instances, to experience a delayed restart after the camera has gone into Auto Power Off.
  3. Fixes minor issues.

A new Canon patent application for RF mount lenses with “Defocus Smoothing” (DS) optical technology. More about Defocus Smoothing is listed here.

Canon patent application 2023170260 (Japan, published 12/1/2023) discusses optical formulas for a bunch of RF mount lenses:

  • 70-200mm F2-2.8
  • 70-135mm F2.5
  • 28-70mm F1.6-2
  • 80-150mm F1.8

All, apparently, have DS on board. From the patent literature:

  • An object of the present invention is to provide a variable power optical system that obtains a uniform and good apodization effect over the entire zoom range and suppresses peripheral dimming.
  • Background Art
    Conventionally, in order to obtain an appropriately blurred image, an optical system equipped with a filter having a transmittance distribution, such as an apodization filter whose transmittance changes as the distance from the optical axis increases, has been known. There is. Patent Document 1 discloses an optical system in which apodization filters are arranged before and after the aperture of a single focus lens.
  • However, since the optical system disclosed in Patent Document 1 is a single focus optical system, it is insufficient as a method for obtaining a sufficient apodization effect in each zoom state of a variable power optical system. Further, in a variable magnification optical system, it is required to suppress peripheral dimming and to obtain a good apodization effect during variable magnification.

Still having doubts about how shitty the rumor industry is?

A few days ago, a Canon patent for Quad Pixel Autofocus was spotted. Today, it became a rumor.

After the patent, now there is “a strong likelihood of Quad Pixel Autofocus being featured in the EOS R5 Mark II“, although “confirmation on this aspect is not as concrete at the moment“. Of course it is not.

If you want to see for yourself what and how much bs has been spilled so far about the EOS R5 Mark II, have a look here. Believe me, no one knows anything and before the few, reliable Japanese sites post something, no one will know anything. They are just pretending.

Forget rumor bs, use your brain and your camera for photography.
