Canon RF 100-300mm F2.8L IS Might Get Released Soon, And Cost A Small Fortune

It seems Canon is set to soon release a new lens for the EOS R system, the Canon RF 100-300mm F2.8L IS.

The Canon RF 100-300mm F2.8L IS is a hot topic on 5chan, and some Japanese rumor sites are reporting it and giving it some credit. The price is nothing for budget oriented photographers.

  • RF 100-300mm F2.8L IS USM – $9499
  • Lens Hood ET-124 – $650
  • Lens Cap E-112 – $25

A high end lens for professionals, not foreseen on any of the noisy rumor sites. And it seems it is coming 2023.

Stay tuned.

DPReview Will Not Disappear Any Time Soon (albeit it will become an archive)

DPReview

So, some news about legendary photographic authority DPReview, which has become a victim of Amazon’s greed and dumbness.

A few weeks ago, news broke that DPReview will shut down and some of the staff migrate to PetaPixel. But now there is some hope to preserve the camera and lens tests, the comparison tool and some other stuff. That is: DPReview will become an archive and stay online for the foreseeable future. For how long no one knows. But they will even post some new content while they work to become an archive. Scott Everett, DPReview’s General Manager, wrote:

Dear readers,

We’ve received a lot of questions about what’s next for the site. We hear your concerns about losing the content that has been carefully curated over the years, and want to assure you that the content will remain available as an archive.

We’ve also heard that you need more time to access the site, so we’re going to keep publishing some more stories while we work on archiving.

At least that.

Did Canon Pull Their Canon EOS R7 C Plans?

Canon Eos R7 Review Canon Firmware Updates

Or did they never have a plan to release an EOS R7 C? Just asking for a friend ;-)

Last year the rumor about an APS-C Cinema camera made its rounds, and encountered some skepticism.

Now, it seems, Canon no longer has such plans, i.e. to launch an EOS R7 C. The source of the rumor says the plans “have been scraped” during 2022.

The original rumor stated:

The Canon EOS R7 C will record 7K60P in Cinema RAW Light and will reportedly have the same codec options as other Cinema EOS cameras, including the Canon EOS R5 C.

There is just a little issue here. As far as I know, the EOS R7 sensor can’t scan the full sensor 16:9 area at 60p. It only offers HQ at 30p. So either Canon originally was thinking to release a new “EOS R7 sensor”, or the rumor was just wishful thinking.

Stay tuned.

See For How Long Canon Will Support Your Camera

Eos R5 8k Video

Canon Japan posted an overview of how long the company will support (repair) its cameras.

The full list can be seen here. Below, you see the dates for EF-mount and mirrorless cameras.

TBD stays for “To Be Defined”, meaning there is yet no established end date for support. No need to panic, though. Even if your camera is no longer supported by Canon, you might easily find some third party repair shop.

More Features Coming To The Canon EOS R5 Via Firmware Updates

Eos R5 8k Video

After Canon released firmware 1.8.1 for the Canon EOS R5, the rumor mills already speculate about what the next firmware updates will deliver.

Latest rumor has it that…:

[…] further firmware updates are coming. It was suggested that there would be 2 more feature updates for the Canon EOS R5 before the end of 2023. With the final version being 2.0.

And that’s all. But it is a rumor about future features to come to the EOS R5 via firmware update ;-)

Stay tuned.
