This Photographer Switched From Sony To The Canon EOS R, Here Is Why

Photographer Tyson Robichaud switched to the Canon EOS R after years using Sony cameras (and other brands too). In a recent post he reviews the Canon EOS R, compares the EOS R to the Sony a7R II, and explains why he switched to Canon.

Tyson’s review is a real world review, with many sample photos, ISO test charts and more useful insights. As you can see below, Canon’s sensor is still behind Sony’s when it comes to high ISO performance.

In his conclusion he writes:

The EOS R has a lot going for it, and a few bizarre omissions/inclusions in my personal opinion.  How those sit with any given shooter will certainly come down to personal needs and expectations for the cost.

Short and sweet, the image quality is still behind the better performing, comparably priced full frame cameras right now.  That, in and of itself may be enough for many to steer clear and go elsewhere with their hard earned money.  The tradeoff for that IQ, in my experience, has been a much better and more solidly operating tool in most every regard.  Less the omission of in body stabilization, and some of the odd and arguably excusable/ignorable design choices, I find the EOS R to be provide a better shooting experience for me, compared to my Sony cameras.  Canon, for their faults, have always been great at building a camera that integrates well with the shooter, and photographic task at hand.

Canon Has An EOS R Model With IBIS On Their Agenda

The image on top shows a slide that was presented during the Canon EOS R announcement/presentation (so we were told).

If real it might give us reason to think Canon is indeed working on a full frame mirrorless camera with IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation). Canon execs always stated that optical IS (i.e. image stabilisation in the lens) is the better technology. It seems they are about to change their mind, or maybe their just responding to user requests.

The Canon EOS RP, the company’s first entry level full frame mirrorless camera was announced yesterday. And it has a price that we didn’t expect from Canon. In an interview with Imaging Resource, Canon execs stated clearly that the EOS RP has the same internals as the EOS 6D Mark II, something we reported over two years ago.

I wonder when we will see a Canon mirrorless camera with IBIS, in one, two, three years?

The Canon EOS RP Has The Same Sensor As The EOS 6D Mark II, And More Tidbits From Interview

We were wrong assuming the new Canon EOS RP did not have the same sensor as the Canon EOS 6D Mark II.

In an interview with Imaging Resource’s Dave Etchells, Canon execs reveal some technical bits about the EOS RP. It turns out the EOS RP sensor is the same sensor as featured on the EOS 6D Mark II, with the exception of the micro lenses optimised for mirrorless lenses. The EOS RP also has the same degree of weather sealing as the EOS 6D Mark II.

This confirms one of our early Canon mirrorless rumors, stating an upcoming Canon mirrorless camera would have the same internals as the EO 6D Mark II.

The Autofocus on the EOS RP should have the same speed as the EOS R. While not having the same number of focus points as the EOS R, 5000, the EOS RP still has more than 4000.

Some excerpts from the interview:

DE: We’re very interested in how you made the RP so light. Even though it’s so light, it still has excellent feel, it just feels very rigid, very stiff. How did you accomplish that? What can you tell our readers?

Canon: So handling is obviously key in this type of camera. It was really important that we choose to use magnesium in the right places and plastic in the right places, so that we [could] make the camera body substantially smaller, but at the same time maintain the same kind of feel or build quality [as our past cameras]. We didn’t want to sacrifice build quality; that was something we paid particularly extreme attention to.

About the upcoming RF 85mm f/1.2L DS (Defocus Smoothing) lens Canon says:

It uses basically the same technology as apodization. There are several manufacturers that have apodization lenses, but our approach to apodization is slightly different. What we do is we use coating technology to make the apodization.

About the upcoming pro EOS R model:

We know there’s a lot of customers and there’s strong demand for a pro body. We’re aware of that. But at the same time, the expectations in terms of performance are really high as well, so we need time to make sure that we get everything right in the body.

MELVILLE, NY, February 13, 2019 – Responding to the demand from amateur and advanced amateur photographers for an entry-level, full-frame mirrorless camera, Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the second camera in the EOS R lineup, the EOS RP. The EOS RP is designed for photographers looking to step up from Canon’s APS-C cameras: the EOS Rebel, EOS M and the EOS 80D, into the world of full-frame mirrorless photography. Weighing in at just 17.29 ounces, the EOS RP camera is lighter than a 500ml bottle of water and smaller than Canon’s popular APS-C DSLR camera, the Canon EOS Rebel T7i, coming in at approximately 5.0in (w) x 3.77in (h) x 2.36in (d). With optics at its core, the EOS RP takes full advantage of the complete line up of RF lenses and is compatible with the existing collection of Canon’s EF and EF-S lenses with the use of one of three optional RF EOS-R Mount Adaptersi.

The new Canon EOS RP full-frame mirrorless camera features a 26.2 megapixel CMOS sensor that is powered by the company’s DIGIC 8 image processor, providing users with high-image quality, outstanding operation and functionality. The new Canon EOS RP features Dual Pixel CMOS Auto Focus (AF) with 4,779 manually selectable AF pointsii and a wide AF coverage area of 88 percent horizontal and 100 percent vertical. With f/1.2 lenses, the camera astonishingly boasts AF sensitivity in low light in as little as Exposure Value (EV) -5. When using the RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM lens with the EOS RP, the camera can focus in as little as 0.05 seconds with Dual Pixel CMOS AFiii. When using eye detection AF, the camera can automatically detect faces and focus on the eye of the subject. This feature is supported when the camera is set in either servo AF mode during continuous shooting and movie servo AF, as well as one-shot AF.

Like the EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera that was announced in September 2018, the EOS RP is built around the same 54mm mount diameter and short-back focus. This allows for the use of one of three optional mount adapters for full compatibility with all existing EF, EF-S, TS-E and MP-E lenses. Through the use of the optional Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter or Control Ring Mount Adapter, these lenses, in fact, gain functionality.

For photographers looking to further expand their abilities and capture a wide variety of both still and video images, the EOS RP features Visual Guide mode. First introduced with the EOS Rebel T7i and EOS 77D, this mode allows users to see on screen how switching modes on the mode dial or tweaking settings can alter the image they are about to capture. This mode helps to guide photographers to capture more compelling images, such as ones with a shallow depth-of-field or being able to give moving subjects a frozen or flowing look. For those looking to expand their imaginative options, the camera also features Creative Assist mode that allows photographers to use new and unique visual effects and adjustments when shooting, such as brightness, contrast, saturation, color tone, monochrome and background blur. In addition, the design, ergonomics, layout and ease-of-use of the camera are very similar to that of other Canon cameras consumers might already be familiar with.

Additional noteworthy features of the EOS RP camera include:

  • Built-in 0.39 inch, 2.36 million dot Electronic Viewfinder with Touch-and-Drag AF
  • Vari-Angle LCD touchscreen
