LensRentals reviewed the new Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art lens, a lens many people was waiting for.

About build quality:

One of the biggest changes Sigma has had in the last few years comes in the build quality of their lenses. Before the Art series and rebranding, Sigma was plagued with stories of back focusing, and inconsistent build quality. However, in the last few years, Sigma has risen to be one of the most respected and beloved third-party lens options. And that stellar attention to detail and build holds true with the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art.

Conclusion:

[…] is the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art Series great? Yes…without question. If you’re looking for an 85mm lens, the Sigma should be an obvious choice. While it doesn’t give us that extra 1/3rd of a stop that you get with the Canon at f/1.2, it does out focus, and outperform it on every other level.

The review comes with many sample pic, and more information about the lens.

Ahead of the curve: Canon projectors on show at ISE 2017

Canon press release:

Canon Europe will showcase its latest projectors at the Integrated Systems Europe show (ISE) 2017, the international AV and electronic systems trade show, taking place at the RAI Exhibition and Convention Centre in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from 7-10 February 2017…

Located in Hall 1, Stand F-42, Canon will collaborate with a variety of partners to showcase a range of installations across industry sectors including education, entertainment and digital signage, demonstrating the latest developments in Canon’s 4K projection technology. This includes an immersive domed 4K projection area, a creative blend installation, as well as “touch and try” demonstrations for visitors.

IMMERSIVE DOMED 4K PROJECTION

For the first time, Canon’s XEED 4K600STZ laser projector will be on display, projecting content on a panorama dome screen from Elumenati. The demonstration will show how the XEED 4K600STZ, with native 4K (4096 x 2400) resolution and Canon’s long-life 6,000-lumen solid-state light source technology, can project outstanding 4K image quality onto curved or domed surfaces with consistent focus.

Visitors will also experience an immersive double-4K projection demonstration via two Canon XEED 4K501ST projectors on a curved surface from AV Stumpfl. This is thanks to Canon’s marginal focus adjustment that keeps images perfectly focused even on the edges of a curved or domed screen.

This area will also feature the XEED 4K501ST projector in collaboration with Phoenics 360° displays, showcasing a seamless 360 degree 4K projection on a multi-media column, ideal for digital signage applications such as advertising.

CREATIVE BLEND SOLUTION

The stand will also feature three Canon XEED WUX450ST projectors along a passageway, offering viewers superb image quality as they walk through, without any obstructions such as shadows. This is due to the projector’s vertical lens shift that enables a range of installation options, as well as the flexible picture-by-picture and edge blending options.

TOUCH & TRY DEMONSTRATIONS

The stand will also include a “touch and try” demonstration area, with devices on display including the XC15 video camera, and EOS 5D Mark IV and EOS-1D X Mark II DSLRs. Here visitors will experience first-hand Canon’s high-resolution image quality and superior functionality, demonstrating the company’s heritage, expertise and knowledge of imaging.

Andreas Herrnböck, European Business Development Manager, Visual Communications, Canon Europe, says: “We’re excited to be at ISE this year to showcase our variety of first-class 4K imaging projectors suited for an array of installations from simulation for education, to entertainment at museums, theatres and galleries, as well as digital signage. We’re excited to be working with our partners that have joined us on the stand this year. Together, we’re continuing to push the boundaries on developing innovative and exciting solutions for a range of installation requirements.”

Canon has been exhibiting at ISE for ten consecutive years, demonstrating its long-standing commitment to excellence in the AV market. The exhibition will showcase the benefits of working with Canon’s industry leading technology.

Canon EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM Review (real world useful, D. Abbott)

Canon EF-M 18-150mm

Canon EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM: B&H Photo, Adorama, Amazon USA, Amazon Canada, Canon Canada, Canon USA

At a glance:

  • EF-M-Mount Lens/APS-C Format
  • 28.8-240mm (35mm Equivalent)
  • Maximum Aperture: f/3.5-6.3
  • STM Autofocus System
  • Optical Image Stabilizer
  • Combination IS and Stabilized Panning

Reviewer and photographer Dustin Abbott reviewed the Canon EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens, one of the latest additions to the EF-M lenses line-up.

Dustin Abbott praises the good sharpness, well controlled vignette and chromatic aberrations, fast and accurate focus, a very well working IS system, and even the macro mode. All in all the EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM seems to be a pretty valuable addition to the EOS M system.

In the conclusion he writes:

[…] the Canon EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens is going to find a lot of takers among those who buy into Canon’s mirrorless system.  The lens is the largest Canon-branded lens for the system thus far (by a fraction), though it is still very compact and light.  In many ways the size of this lens makes more sense now that the M series has evolved into more of a mini-DSLR than the square-edged original M that had more of a point and shoot profile.  The M3 and M5 aren’t really “pocketable”, and thus this lens makes more sense.  It is still extremely small and light by DSLR standards, and fulfills the mandate of being a light yet flexible alternative to a heavier DSLR kit.

The Canon EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM comes in two color variants (black and silver) and sells for $499. Dustin’s reviews come as video-reviews (see above) along with a written review with a lot of sample pics.
