The Canon Professional Network started a tutorial series for their own photo editing and RAW converter software, Canon Digital Photo Professional (DPP) 4.x (latest version).

Welcome to the Digital Photo Professional video tutorial section! CPN writer and software expert George Cairns unpacks Canon’s popular workflow software and explains key components with video demonstrations on how it can make a difference to your RAW workflow.

We will be publishing one video per week over the next 11 weeks, looking at particular elements of the software, with each video accompanied by a pdf mini guide which includes the the images used in the tutorial. Collect all 11 guides to build up the ultimate DPP library!

Simply click on each video as they are added each week and learn more about the software and how it can make a difference to your photography!

For the time being there are five tutorial videos:

  • Get organised
  • Recover missing shadows
  • Levels and curves
  • Counteract colour casts
  • Improve composition (latest added video)

Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 M IS STM to be announced in April

New tidbits about the prime lens for APS-C DSLRs Canon is rumored to announce on April 5. It may be the Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 M IS STM.

As you can see it’s not the wide angle lens that was suggested until a few days ago. And there is this “M” in the moniker. Most likely the M stays for macro but we do not know for sure so far.

It’s a pity it’s not a wide angle lens. Hopefully it’s really a macro, possibly with built-in LED lights like on the [shoplink 38547]EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM[/shoplink].

Some Canon Rebel T7i news (the Rebel T7i is EOS 800D in Europe). Photography Blog posted a set of sample photos shot with the new Rebel T7i, along with sone first impression thoughts (emphasis mine):

Given the chance to test the camera in challenging low-contrast light conditions, we can report that our first impressions are very good. Image quality is respectable under tough conditions and excellent when the light entering the camera is maximised.

An excellent feature set in a lightweight body with simple layout means the EOS 800D is likely to entice beginners to further explore the world of interchangeable lens cameras.

With dual pixel CMOS auto focus and effective 5-axis stabilisation, the EOS 800D bridges a gap between photo-oriented DSLRs and mirrorless system cameras more suited to video functions.

Perhaps the most impressive aspects of the EOS 800D are its image quality, powerful performance through Canon’s DIGIC 7 processor and its versatile handling through the live view mode of the articulated rear touchscreen.

It seems Canon made a lot right with the company’s latest entry-level DSLR. The feature set is impressing for a Rebel-class DSLR, the image quality is excellent, there is Dual Pixel AF, and more. Hard not to like this new Canon DSLR.
