Canon EOS 6D Mark II to feature Dual Pixel Auto-Focus (DPAF) [CW4]

Eos 6d

After yesterday‘s bits about the Canon EOS 6D Mark II, we have a small addition today.

I have been told (thanks) by a good source that the Canon EOS 6D Mark II will have Canon’s first tier sensor based Auto-Focus system on board, Dual Pixel AF.

DPAF was first featured on the Canon EOS 70D. It’s available on the Canon EOS 80D, EOS 5D Mark IV, EOS M5, EOS 7D Mark II, EOS-1D X Mark II, and on some Canon Cinema cameras.

CW’s take: the rumor has a good chance to be reliable. I think a Canon EOS 6D Mark II without DPAF would not make much sense for Canon. For the time being these are the rumored Canon EOS 6D MArk II specs:

  • 24MP or 25MP sensor
  • Dual Pixel AF
  • Dual SD card slots
  • NO 4K
  • Full tiltable display
  • New AF system
  • Slightly smaller and lighter
  • Announcement expected Q1 2017

Stay tuned…

These are the image sensors Canon is going to make available to third party manufacturers

Back in August 2016 Japanese business portal Nikkei reported that Canon will start selling the company’s image sensors to third parties. In other words: Canon will enter the image sensor market with their own products (for OEM use).

Back in August:

[Canon] plans to begin selling its CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) sensors within two years and has already assembled a team to launch the business.

The competition that Canon brings to the market could help raise the level of a technology whose use has expanded from taking photos to enabling machines to see the world around them.

Now it seems Canon is ready to enter the image sensor market. Specification sheets for three image sensors which we think are Canon’s first offering to the market and are now available for third party manufacturer have leaked over the web. It’s a 120MP APS-H sensor, a 2.2MP fullframe sensor for use in very low light settings, and a 5MP sensor with global shutter.

Renowned nature, wildlife, and travel photographer Richard Bernabe posted his impression about the new Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. Another positive review for the latest addition to Canon’s winning EOS 5D series.

About the dynamic range:

High-contrast sunrise and sunset situations often needed only only single exposure in order to capture the full range of tones in the scene.

About high ISO:

Properly exposed files were perfectly acceptable at 3200 ISO and even 6400.

About the AF system:

The autofocus system on the Canon 5D Mark IV is very accurate and locks onto any bit of available contrast, even in low light.

From the conclusion:

The Canon 5D Mark IV is a game changer for me. The improvements are exactly what I had hoped for – better dynamic range and high ISO performance – among many others. The results I was able to see with my own eyes this past week have me super excited about my travel schedule for 2017 and the prospect of taking this camera along with me. I suspect the Canon 5D Mark IV will be my landscape, nature, and travel workhorse DSLR for at least the next two or three years.

I recommend you read the review, since it is not based on lab settings but on the impression and the experience of a professional photographer. Moreover, the sample pictures are beautiful.
