Canon Rebel SL2 eventually coming for CES 2016? [CW3]

canon rumorscanon rumors

Thanks for the tip! Where is the Canon Rebel SL2? Expected in Fall 2015, the replacement for the world’s smallest DSLR is still on the run. Latest suggestion I got say Canon will announce the Rebel SL2 at CES 2016. That’s plausible. The Rebel SL2 is a consumer product, CES may be the right spot to announce it.

This is the second hint I get about a possible Rebel SL2 announcement in January 2016. There is no doubt that there will be a Rebel SL2. The question is: why is Canon delaying the announcement?

Will we see other Canon gear at CES 2016? Unlikely. Some sites report that a possible replacement for the Canon EOS 70D may be announced at CES. I do not think this is likely. CES will also not be the stage where Canon might announce the EOS 5D Mark IV and EOS-1D X Mark II.

For the time being, these are the Rebel SL2 specs I got:

  • 24MP, same sensor as T6i/T6s
  • Smaller than SL1
  • Wireless battery charging, old charger still supplied and works as before
  • 19 point AF system
  • Hybrid CMOS AF III
  • Digic 6
  • New battery type

Canon EOS-1D X Mark II will not be announced in 2015, has dual DIGIC7 and dual cFast [CW2]

EOS-1D X

After a long row of rumors suggesting the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II will be announced in Q4 2015, the rumors mill is now stating the EOS-1D X Mark II will come in 2016, before NAB (which happens in April 2016).

The announcement date is one thing, the specs another. There are still very few specs that leaked, and even less of these are reliable. However, the latest has it as follows. The EOS-1D X Mark II is said to feature dual DIGIC7 processors and dual cFast memory slots. That’s all.

Take it with a grain of salt. An EOS-1D X Mark II announcement in 2016 is an almost safe bet (CW4), the specs are plausible speculations (CW2). But after all those rumors suggesting an imminent announcement of the EOS-1D X Mark II, I would add some extra amount of salt to the usual doses.

For the time being the EOS-1D X Mark II is rumored to have the following specs:

  • 24MP
  • 14 fps in RAW mode
  • 4K video
  • Dual DIGIC7
  • Dual cFast memory slots

Keep in mind that the EOS-1D X Mark II is Canon’s full-frame flagship, the top of the line. Whatever specs it will have, it will be another killer DSLR made for the most demanding pros. Given how secretive Canon has become, do not expect to see some reliable specs until the last weeks before the announcement.

Enjoy life!

EOS-1D X Mark II coming with 4K video?

Back in March we had a first hint that the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II might feature 4K video recording. The suggestion came from Mr. Masaya Maeda in an interview. The possibility of a 4K enabled EOS-1D X Mark II surfaced again in a fresh rumor. Despite being rumored to feature 4K, the EOS-1D X Mark II is said to be a mostly stills oriented cameras.

Canon EOS-1D X Mark II almost ready? [CW3]

EOS-1D X

A new rumor suggests the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II has come out of pre-production. It’s said that the EOS-1D X Mark II is already actively used by photographers around the world, for the latest tests and to produce marketing material.

No specs have been leaked so far. A 24MP sensor is rumored, and a burst rate of 14 fps. Moreover, some bits emerged about a new AF system (every new camera is always rumored to have a new AF system) and some vague new viewfinder technology.

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark II is expected to be announced in 2015, the question is when. Stay tuned for more.

For comparison, the EOS-1D X specs:

  • 18.1 MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor
  • Dual DIGIC 5+ Image Processors
  • 3.2″ 1.04m-Dot ClearView II LCD Monitor
  • Full HD 1080p Video Recording at 30 fps

Canon EOS-1D X firmware 2.0.8 spotted in the field

EOS-1D X

A user of the German forum DForum sent his EOS-1D X in for maintenance, and got it back with firmware version 2.0.8. The latest official firmware for the EOS-1D X is 2.0.7

This happens often. Customer sent in their cameras for various maintenance task and get it back with a newer firmware. Usually this can be interpreted that the new firmware will soon be released. At the time of writing it is not known which bug fixes or new features come with firmware 2.0.8. The user who got the EOS-1D X back with firmware 2.0.8 didn’t find any differences, so it may be safe to assume that it is mainly a bug fix, or that compatibility with new lenses is introduced.

The EOS-1D X replacement, the EOS-1D X Mark II, is rumored to be announced towards the end of 2015. However, though this has been often rumored in the last months, it is still in the realm of speculation. I give an EOS-1D Mark II announcement in 2015 a chance of 50%-60%. In Q1 2016, we expect Canon to announce the EOS 5D Mark IV and the EOS 6D Mark II.

Stay tuned…
