These are the EOS M5 kits Canon will announce next week [CW5]

EOS m5
Is this the Canon EOS M5?

A list of the upcoming Canon EOS M5 kits leaked at Nokishita Camera.

  • EOS M5 body
  • EOS M5 with EF-M 15-45mm kit
  • EOS M5 with EF-M 18-150mm kit

We still know very little about the Canon EOS M5 specifications. These specs have been rumored:

  • 24MP sensor (80D sensor or some variant)
  • Built-in electronic viewfinder
  • New AF system
  • Classical camera design, more in line with Fuji or Olympus
  • EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM coming as new kit option

Moreover, the EOS M5 might also feature Dual Pixel AF. We expect the announcement on September 15th. Stay tuned!

Canon EVF-DC2 electronic viewfinder may be announced soon, registration at certification authority suggests

Canon EVF-DC2

The announcement of the Canon EVF-DC2 viewfinder may be the matter of a few days. The Canon EVF-DC2 has been registered at Russian certification authority Novocert, according to Nokishita Camera.

  • EVF-DC2
    • Electronic finder
    • SKU: 1727C001AA, 1882C001AA
    • Date: September 6, 2016

As you can see there are two SKUs listed, which may point to two different color options. At the same certification authority, two mirrorless cameras have been registered, one of them coming with two color options. Is the Canon EVF-DC2 meant to be used on this two upcoming mirrorless cameras?

Since one of the upcoming mirrorless cameras is rumored to have a built-in electronic viewfinder, you may wonder for what this new viewfinder is for. If the rumor of a new EOS M with built-in viewfinder is true, then the Canon EVF-DC2 might be the new viewfinder to be used on the EOS M3 and some Powershot G models. But it might also be that the rumored EOS M camera with built-in EVF is not real. Some pictures of an alleged new EOS M camera with built-in EVF are making the rounds.

Stay tuned.

Next Canon EOS M camera coming with Dual Pixel AF? [CW3]

EOS M3
The Canon EOS M3. Is the next EOS M coming soon?

A 24MP sensor to be featured on the next Canon EOS M camera has already been rumored. Now I got a new tidbit, suggesting the next EOS M will also have Dual Pixel AF.

This is more likely than you may think at first glance. The sensor that’s rumored to be featured on the next EOS M is a “EOS 80D”-like sensor. While DPAF has been rumored for each and any Canon mirrorless camera since the original EOS M, this time it may indeed be true. If the recently leaked, sketchy images of a new, pro-oriented looking EOS M are real, then it might well have DPAF.

Dual Pixel AF would make a big difference, and it would make for a Canon mirrorless camera no one would complain about the auto-focus performance. Let’s hope DPAF will eventually be featured on a Canon mirrorless camera.

Currently these are the rumored specifications (via CR):

  • 24MP sensor (80D sensor or some variant)
  • Built-in electronic viewfinder
  • New AF system
  • Classical camera design, more in line with Fuji or Olympus
  • EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM coming as new kit option

As you can see, “80D sensor or some variant” and “new AF system” are rumored, hence a sensor with Dual Pixel AF isn’t that unlikely. The images below showed up in a forum and are said to be the real thing:

We expect Canon to announce the new EOS M next week, on September 15th. Stay tuned!

These drawings show how people would like the next Canon EOS M to look

Canon eos m5

Two drawings have been posted in a forum. The sketches depict a possible mirrorless camera with a Canon logo.

Though these sketches are sold as possibly depicting the next Canon EOS M camera, I do not think they have anything to do with the real thing. Most likely the drawings just show what kind of  mirrorless camera people would like Canon to make. There is absolutely nothing that suggests the drawings may point to a real camera.

Canon is rumored to announce two mirrorless cameras before September 15th. Stay tuned…!

What to expect to be announced by Canon before Photokina 2016 (EOS 5D Mark IV and more)

eos 5d mark iveos 5d mark iv

It’s not just about the EOS 5D Mark IV. We are getting closer to the most important Canon announcement of the year so I thought it would be a good idea to sum up what we can expect Canon to announce. I give different ratings. The most likely date for EOS 5D Mark IV and other announcements is August 25 or August 26.

Announcements set for the end of August:

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV (all rumors). Likely the most anticipated DSLR of the year and still no reliable specs. Will it have 24MP or 28MP? First EOS 5D Mark IV product page already showed up – [CW5]

Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS Mark II. Said to be the new kit lens for the EOS 5D Mark IV. Still no specifications. Product page showed up on the Internet – [CW5]

Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III. This lens too will be announced soon. A product page showed up. No specs – [CW5]

Canon W-E1 WiFi adapter. This has just leaked a few days ago. Canon will enter the market with their own WiFi adapter for SD card slots – [CW5]

Announcements that are less likely:

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM. Not sure what to think about this. There have been rumors about a replacement for the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS but I always thought the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS was the lens that replaced the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS – [CW3]

A prosumer Canon EOS M body. This is becoming the white unicorn. No reliable information, just speculation and a lot of wishful thinking. Let’s give it a [CW3]

New EF-M lenses for the EOS M system. There are patents, and rumors. We also have reason to believe that Canon started to take their EOS M system seriously. There will be more EF-M lenses, I am just not sure if we will see those lenses in 2016 – [CW3]

It’s barely 3 weeks until the day we expect Canon to make their announcements. Stay tuned, we will soon know some specifications.
