Canon EOS M5 starting at $899 and getting a $100 pre-order discount? [CW2]

EOS M5

Thanks Emanuel

A member of Chinese forum mobile01 claims to know the US prices of the upcoming Canon EOS M5 mirrorless camera. The weird thing: it’s suggested you get a $100 discount if you pre-order the EOS M5.

However, as weird as the rumor may be, here it is:

  • M5 body only $899, pre-order $799
  • M5 with EF-M 15-45 mm lens $1,098, pre-order $998
  • M5 with EF-M 18-150mm lens $1,198, no pre-order discount

An introduction price of $899 for the EOS M5 is absolutely plausible. On the other hand, it’s hard to believe Canon will need to encourage sales for the EOS M5 with pre-order discounts, since this camera will sell like hot cakes at X-Mas.

Last week some reliable specifications leaked:

  • Sensor: 24.2 million pixel APS-C CMOS
  • Dual Pixel AF
  • Touch AF (you can select AF point on the touchscreen while looking through the viewfinder)
  • DIGIC 7
  • 7fps
  • ISO 100-25600
  • Video: FullHD 60fps
  • Dynamic NFC, Bluetooth built-in
  • Media: SD / SDHC / SDXC card
  • Large tilting LCD monitor
  • Fast Start-Up
  • 5-axis electronic image stabilization (IBIS?)
  • Size: 115.6 x 89.2 x 60.6 mm
  • Weight: 427g

I wonder if such a discount was offered before. What do you think, are the discounts a hoax or the real thing?

As you can see most of the rumoured specs happened to be real, included Dual Pixel AF (we reported). Basically, this appears to be a Canon EOS 80D without the mirror etc. The Canon EOS M5 appears to be slightly smaller and a bit heavier than a Rebel.

And what about “5-axis electronic image stabilization“? This sounds very much like IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation) to me. May the Canon EOS M5 have such a technology? Update: it has electronic IBIS.

Well, Canon eventually build the killer-MILC we were all waiting for. The fact that Dual Pixel AF is on board will make a huge difference. We expect Canon to announce the EOS M5 on September 15th. The EOS M5 will go on sale with the following options:

  • M5 body
  • M5 with EF-M 15-45mm kit
  • M5 with EF-M 18-150mm kit

So, what do you think? Is this the enthusiast-oriented Canon mirrorless camera that will destroy the competition? Sound off in the comment section…

Is this the Canon EOS M5?

A list of the upcoming Canon EOS M5 kits leaked at Nokishita Camera.

  • EOS M5 body
  • EOS M5 with EF-M 15-45mm kit
  • EOS M5 with EF-M 18-150mm kit

We still know very little about the Canon EOS M5 specifications. These specs have been rumored:

  • 24MP sensor (80D sensor or some variant)
  • Built-in electronic viewfinder
  • New AF system
  • Classical camera design, more in line with Fuji or Olympus
  • EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM coming as new kit option

Moreover, the EOS M5 might also feature Dual Pixel AF. We expect the announcement on September 15th. Stay tuned!

Canon EVF-DC2 electronic viewfinder may be announced soon, registration at certification authority suggests

Canon EVF-DC2

The announcement of the Canon EVF-DC2 viewfinder may be the matter of a few days. The Canon EVF-DC2 has been registered at Russian certification authority Novocert, according to Nokishita Camera.

  • EVF-DC2
    • Electronic finder
    • SKU: 1727C001AA, 1882C001AA
    • Date: September 6, 2016

As you can see there are two SKUs listed, which may point to two different color options. At the same certification authority, two mirrorless cameras have been registered, one of them coming with two color options. Is the Canon EVF-DC2 meant to be used on this two upcoming mirrorless cameras?

Since one of the upcoming mirrorless cameras is rumored to have a built-in electronic viewfinder, you may wonder for what this new viewfinder is for. If the rumor of a new EOS M with built-in viewfinder is true, then the Canon EVF-DC2 might be the new viewfinder to be used on the EOS M3 and some Powershot G models. But it might also be that the rumored EOS M camera with built-in EVF is not real. Some pictures of an alleged new EOS M camera with built-in EVF are making the rounds.

Stay tuned.
