Canon EOS R Model With IBIS And 100MP In The Pipeline?

Top 10 Cameras Canon Rumors Full Frame Mirrorless Camera Canon Eos R Pro Eos R Canon Lens Explorers Of Light

The lack of IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation) on the Canon EOS R stirred a lot of discussion. Along with the “no dual card slot” it’s the most mentioned shortcoming of Canon’s first full frame mirrorless camera.

No wonder that most rumors about future EOS R models revolve around IBIS, especially since a series of interviews with Canon execs killed a lot of potential EOS R rumors.

As most of you likely know, we expect Canon to announce at least one more EOS R model this year, and according to our sources it will be a high resolution model which could replace the the EOS 5Ds(R) lineup.

Latest from the rumor outlets has it that Canon has an EOS R model with IBIS and a 100MP sensor in the pipeline. Canon Rumors seems to be pretty confident about the fact that Canon will release an EOS R model with the specs listed above, though we will not see “such a camera until 2020”. It’s also unclear when Canon will embrace IBIS on their full frame mirrorless cameras.

Canon Watch’s take: While it’s entirely possible that Canon might working on a 100MP EOS R with IBIS, we feel at this point it’s little more than wishful thinking. We do not expect such a camera anytime soon. What we expect, is an EOS R model with a sensor resolution around 50MP.

If you want to know what Canon is going to do with the EOS R system we recommend you have a look at this interview.

Stay tuned…

Canon Waits For User Feedback To Further Develop EOS R, EOS M and DSLR, New RF Lenses To Be Announced Soon, 8K Model On Its Way

Canon Eos R Firmware Update

Imaging Resource’s Dave Etchells interviewed Canon execs about the EOS R system.

The interview discusses various topics related to the EOS R development, to Canon’s market strategy, and future plans. Some excerpts:

DE: Canon continues to offer many capable and high-end DSLR cameras. Do you expect to continue with similar R&D expenditures on DSLR cameras and lenses in the immediate future, or will resources be shifted toward the EOS R system and future mirrorless cameras and lenses?

Canon Inc: It’s a bit too early to make that decision. While we have heard a lot of positive feedback on our EOS R System and wishes for its future, we saw very strong demand [for] DSLRs including 5D Mark IV, 6D Mark II, 80D and Rebel series during the holiday shopping season. Also, the EOS M50 has been very popular since its launch.

Canon offers a wider range of cameras and lenses over any other brand to meet various demands of our customers. Currently, we are simultaneously developing new products in the DSLR family, EOS R series and EOS M series. The most important

When asked if Canon has a clear plan for the future development of the EOS R, EOS M and DSLR systems, the answer was that they are waiting to hear from customers to learn where to focus.

More statements from Canon execs:

[…] sales performance of EOS R camera and RF lenses is almost in line with our original expectation. We have gotten a huge amount of positive feedback on the RF lenses. Everyone who has tried the RF 50mm F1.2 has loved it.

We developed the EOS R System for the next 30 years, and started by introducing higher-end RF lenses. Yes, we are very serious about mirrorless. But please do not get the wrong impression, we will continue to enhance DSLR technology and products as well.

Video will play a huge role in the EOS R System for sure. For example, an 8K video capable camera is already in our EOS R-series roadmap

Canon execs also confirmed that the company is already developing the next RF lenses, and from the wording used it seems clear that the announcement isn’t far away. And as you can read above, Canon has an EOS R model with 8K video on their agenda.

There is a lot to grab from this interesting interview, and I guess it killed a lot of possible EOS R rumors for the next months.

Yet Another Mention Of Major Firmware Update for The Canon EOS R

Canon Eos R Firmware Update

This is the second time that a major firmware update for the Canon EOS R is rumored. The first time was in September 2018, a few weeks after the announcement, and most of us thought it was a completely unreliable rumor.

This time we think it is possible, despite the fact there are no hints on what the “major functionality firmware update”, which apparently should come in Q1 2019, will bring to the EOS R.

A firmware update within 6-7 months after the release of a camera is not uncommon, but there is a serious possibility that the firmware update will just fix some bugs and not bring all kind of supercool functionalities to the camera (this is something Fujifilm does, Canon not). In the past there have been rumors about all sort of firmware updates for the EOS 6D Mark II and the EOS 5D Mark IV, and no one really got it. So, don’t put too much hope on this.

Here Are 5 Reasons To Get The Canon EOS R, And A First Look On The Kipon ELEGANT 75mm f/2.4 Lens

Canon Eos R Firmware Update

Mattias Burling posted a short video where he explains why the Canon EOS R does well for his professional work. And he had a chance to use the new Kipon ELEGANT 75mm f/2.4 lens for EOS R mount.

He says:

[…] there is much more to like about the camera than I list in this video. For example in camera video color, highlight roll off, audio, etc, etc. Another negative is that its a bit too feature rich, capable and easy to use for it to challenge […] creatively on the streets. For recreational shooting I prefer something more limiting.

And I know there will be 4K crusaders commenting on me liking HD. […] I started shooting 4K Raw video before most you even left 720p. So I know all about it. The fact is that I have use had the HD from the EOS-R projected together with FS7 4K on huge screen and no one notices any difference. Law of diminishing return and the right tool for the job.
