Nokishita leaked images of five upcoming lenses for the Canon EOS R system.

As you can see, there are some hot pieces of glass among them. Anyone still doubting Canon is taking their EOS R system seriously?

The lenses are going to be announced on February 14, 2019.

Photographer Dustin Abbott posted his final verdict on what is the kit lens for the EOS R system, the Canon RF 24-105mm F/4L IS.

From Abbott’s conclusion:

I don’t get overly excited about lenses with a maximum aperture of only F4, but there’s no question that this is a very useful lens.  You can do about 80% of your photography (or maybe 100%, depending on your needs) without the Canon RF 24-105mm F4L IS USM ever leaving your camera. 

I would recommend a good telephoto lens and perhaps a wide aperture prime lens to compliment this lens.  At the time of this review, the only camera that it can be used on is the Canon EOS R, but that will undoubtedly change as Canon introduces more cameras supporting the RF mount moving into the future.  I noted in my EOS R review that the EOS R (at present) seems to be more a delivery system for the excellent new lenses that the RF mount has unlocked.  The RF 24-105L is a great place to start in building your new lens kit, though, as it manages to avoid many of the common pitfalls from such lenses and delivers above-average image quality and truly excellent autofocus performance.

Canon’s Next EOS R Model Is Entry Level, Costs $1600, And Has One Card Slot, Announcement Feb 14

Canon’s next full frame mirrorless camera will most probably not be a high resolution model as we wrote. It will be a competitively priced entry level model.

A good source told us it will sell at $1,600, and have one card slot, which is to expect at this price. The moniker EOS RP is most likely.

So far we do not have more specifications to share but I’m sure more information will show up soon.

So what conclusions can be drawn? Which of the two cameras – the Canon R or the Panasonic S1 – has the upper hand? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants. 

Arguments in favor of the Canon EOS R: 

  • Better moiré control: Has an anti-alias filter to avoid artificial patterns to appear in images. 
  • Better video autofocus: Features on-sensor phase-detection for more confident movie autofocus. 
  • Larger screen: Has a bigger rear LCD (3.2″ vs 3.0″) for image review and settings control.
  • More selfie-friendly: Has an articulated screen that can be turned to be front-facing.
  • More compact: Is smaller (139x98mm vs 149x110mm) and thus needs less room in the bag.
  • Less heavy: Is lighter (by 238g or 27 percent) and hence easier to carry around.
  • Easier travel charging: Can be conveniently charged via its USB port.
  • Faster data transfer: Supports a more advanced USB protocol (3.1 vs 3.0).
  • More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced segment (23 percent cheaper at launch).
  • More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in September 2018).

Reasons to prefer the Panasonic Lumix DC-S1: 

  • More detail: Has more megapixels (47.3 vs 30.1MP), which boosts linear resolution by 25%.
  • Maximized detail: Lacks an anti-alias filter to exploit the sensor’s full resolution potential. 
  • High quality composites: Can combine several shots after pixel-shifting its sensor. 
  • Better video: Provides higher movie framerates (4K/60p versus 4K/30p). 
  • Better sound control: Has a headphone port that enables audio monitoring while recording.
  • More detailed viewfinder: Has higher resolution electronic viewfinder (5760k vs 3690k dots).
  • Easier setting verification: Features a control panel on top to check shooting parameters.
  • Faster burst: Shoots at higher frequency (9 vs 8 flaps/sec) to capture the decisive moment.
  • Sharper images: Has stabilization technology built-in to reduce the impact of hand-shake.
  • More solid recording: Has a full-sized HDMI port for a sturdy connection to an external recorder.
  • Greater peace of mind: Features a second card slot as a backup in case of memory card failure.
  • More modern: Was introduced somewhat (4 months) more recently.

Information About A Canon EOS R Model With 26MP Making Rounds

A rumor claiming that a Canon EOS R model with 26MP is in Canon’s pipeline is making its rounds on the web.

The rumor builds on a post by Nokishita dated March 2018, where a list of unreleased Canon gear is published (see image below).

UPDATE: we posted the wrong model number. There is indeed a unreleased 26MP full frame mirrorless camera.

  • Mirrorless camera
  • Full size [full frame, editor’s note]
  • Wi-Fi · Bluetooth installed
  • Maximum image size of test machine: 6240 × 4160 [makes up to 26MP, editor’s note]
  • Probably will be released within 1 year data as 5D Mark IV [K349], the image size may be a dummy possibility)

While there might be a 26MP EOS R model on Canon’s agenda, so far nothing ever leaked about such a camera nor have there been any reliable hints in this direction. For the time being, this is a wishmor (wishful rumor),

A Third Canon EOS R Model Coming In 2019? [CW 1]

Shortly before the expected announcement of a new Canon EOS R model, a new rumors emerges from the web.

Latest has it that Canon might announce a third Canon EOS R model in 2019. So far we are reasonably sure only about one model, which we expect to be announced on February 14. It will most likely be named EOS RP.

However, Canon Rumors seems to rather confident that there might be a third Canon EOS R model on Canon’s 2019 agenda:

  • The camera is in “final” development, but production has not started.
  • Dual card slots are present in the body, one being SD, the other being something else.
  • The touch bar is gone, replaced by a familiar joystick.

This is the first time we here about a third EOS R model. It’s possible, but we think it’s highly unlikely. It also puzzles us that the only specifications so far are related to two of the strongest criticism the EOS R had to face: no dual card slot and the touch bar.
