The Upcoming Canon RF 85mm F/1.2L DS Lens Has “Defocus Smoothing” (trademarked by Canon)

RF 85mm F/1.2L USM

UPDATE: we have reason to believe Canon will announce two RF 85mm f/1.2L lenses, one with and one without “Defocus Smoothing”.

In a few days Canon will announce the EOS RP and five new lenses for the RF mount.

Among the five lenses there is the Canon RF 85mm F/1.2L DS lens. Nokishita found that Canon registered “Defocus Smoothing” as a trademark, and it’s very likely the “DS” in the lens’ moniker stands for “Defocus Smoothing”.

If we have to make an educated guess, “Defocus Smoothing” might be an optical technology to enhance the lens’ bokeh. Since the RF 85mm has f/1.2, and hence already provides a lot of bokeh, it would make sense to enhance it further.

We will soon know more. Stay tuned for the announcement on February 14, 2019. Any suggestion about “Defocus Smoothing” is welcome.

Canon Patent: RF 70-300mm F/4-5.6 IS Lens For EOS R System

Canon Patent

Canon is investing in their new EOS R system in a concrete and solid way. Here is a Canon patent application (2019-020679) for an RF 70-300mm F/4-5.6 IS lens. This lens is the EOS R version of a very common lens aimed at non professionals, for the consumer market.

Next week (2/14/19) Canon will announce the EOS RP, the company’s first entry level full frame mirrorless camera, and a lens like the RF 70-300mm F/4-5.6 IS is sure to hit the market soon (most patent application never do). I’m just not 100% sure it’s also image stabilised.

  • Zoom ratio: 4.11
  • Focal length: 71.40~136.34~293.23 mm
  • F number: 3.94~4.72~5.83
  • Half angle of view: 16.86~9.02~4.22
  • Image height: 21.64 mm
  • Lens length: 165.00~202.03~235.83 mm
  • Back focus: 12.14~31.67~72.45 mm

Canon EOS R vs EOS RP Size Comparison

Canon Eos Rp

ApoTelyt published a rather accurate size comparison between the Canon EOS R and the upcoming Canon EOS RP.

They also list the respective strengths.

Advantages of the Canon EOS R:

  • More detail: Offers more megapixels (30.1 vs 26.2MP) with a 7% higher linear resolution.
  • More detailed viewfinder: Has higher resolution electronic viewfinder (3690k vs 2360k dots).
  • Easier setting verification: Features an LCD display on top to control shooting parameters.
  • Larger screen: Has a bigger rear LCD (3.2″ vs 3.0″) for image review and settings control.
  • More detailed LCD: Has a higher resolution rear screen (2100k vs 1040k dots).
  • Faster burst: Shoots at higher frequency (8 vs 5 flaps/sec) to capture the decisive moment.
  • Better sealing: Is weather sealed to enable shooting in dusty or wet environments.
  • More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in September 2018).

Reasons to prefer the Canon EOS RP:

  • Better sound control: Has a headphone port that enables audio monitoring while recording.
  • More compact: Is smaller (133x85mm vs 139x98mm) and will fit more readily into a bag.
  • Less heavy: Has a lower weight (by 175g or 27 percent) and is thus easier to take along.
  • Sharper images: Has stabilization technology built-in to reduce the impact of hand-shake.
  • More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced category (30 percent cheaper at launch).
  • More modern: Was introduced somewhat (5 months) more recently.

Review: Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L (superlative image quality, Photography Blog)

Canon RF 28-70mm F/2L Review Rf Mount Canon Eos R

Photography Blog reviewed the Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L lens for the EOS R system. A lens that’s universally considered being of outstanding optical quality.

From their conclusion:

There’s no getting away from the fact that the new Canon RF 28-70mm f/2 L USM lens is very big, heavy and expensive, but there’s also no getting away from the fact that it’s extremely well-built, fast in terms of the maximum aperture, and capable of delivering superlative image quality.

We’ve seen the Canon RF 28-70mm f/2 L USM described as offering four prime lenses in one, and after using it for an extended period of time, we’d certainly agree with that assessment. Whether using it as 28mm, 35mm, 50mm or 70mm, it delivers tack-sharp images both in the centre and at the edges of the frame, with no need to stop down to get acceptable results. That means that you can shoot at f/2 at any focal length and get buttery-smooth bokeh as a result of the 9-blade aperture and that maximum aperture that is one-stop faster than most zooms of this type. Slight vignetting at wide-open apertures and a little barrel distortion at 28mm are the only real optical issues of note from what is optically an incredible lenses. Read the review…

Are These The Canon EOS RP Specifications? [CW2]

Ibis Canon Rumors Canon Full Frame Mirrorless Canon PowerShot G7 X Canon Eos 90d Coronavirus

A list of specifications for the upcoming Canon EOS RP full frame mirrorless camera emerged from the web.

We expect Canon to make a major mirrorless related announcement on February 14, 2019. Five upcoming RF lenses have already leaked.

We know (now) that the EOS RP will be an entry level model in the EOS R line-up, these are the suggested specifications:

  • Camera weight is 400g, the lightest full-frame mirrorless camera ever
  • A side-articulated monitor and a comfortable grip
  • A new 24MP CMOS sensor. Expect the performance similar to EOS R
  • No Touch Bar and top monitor but an extra dial
  • 5FPS
  • Standard ISO 100-40000
  • Eye AF now supports Servo AF and Video AF
  • Dual Pixel AF speed is 0.05 sec.
  • USB-C and headphone jack are available. Battery charging while shooting issupported
  • Canon Log, HDMI clean output, and 1.56x 4K crop
  • Price is about $1300USD for body (We’re really hoping it’s priced this aggressively)

Take this with a grain of salt. It looks legit but we have no confirmation. Some of the stuff above looks to good for an entry level full frame mirrorless camera made by Canon. Our information about the price differs, we have been told the EOS RP will sell at $1,600.

Stay tuned…
