Canon EOS 80D coming with 28MP and new Auto-Focus system? [CW3]

Eos 70d

After all those fake rumors, I was glad to hear news from one of my trusted sources. This source may be wrong but at least it is not intentionally delivering fake rumors.

I have been told (thanks) that the Canon EOS 80D will feature a 28MP sensor. The source mentioned also a “more advanced AF system” (compared to the EOS 70D). I am not sure what to think here. I do not believe the EOS 80D will get the same advanced AF system as the EOS 7D Mark II, but anything is possible. If I am not wrong, there was a rumor floating around the web a month or two ago that also suggested a high resolution for the EOS 80D.

The source also said that the EOS 80D will get some of the features of higher models. The 70D got the AF system of the EOS 7D, and it is usual practice by Canon to add features of higher models in a new mid-level camera. So what can we expect from the EOS 80D? Other rumors I got (by less reputable or unknown sources) suggest the EOS 80D will get the anti-flickering technology employed on the EOS 7D Mark II but I am somewhat sceptical about this feature being implemented on a mid-level DSLR like the EOS 80D. Dual Pixel AF will not get lost, that’s sure. It will likely have a new AF system but it is unclear how advanced it will be. In the past I got a suggestion the EOS 80D may have focus peaking on board (introduced with the EOS M3). That would be a powerful and very welcome addition to the next xxD model, though I do not think Canon will feature it on a DSLR. WiFi and NFC will also be on board, but no GPS. Another suggestion I got, says the EOS 80D will have something around 8fps (the 70D has 7fps), which is a plausible frame rate for this camera. Sure thing that the EOS 80D will have a tiltable display, one memory card slot, and no dual CPU (like 7D2). Please note that it may still be early to have reliable specs for the EOS 80D. Take anything with the usual salt.

The EOS 70D was announced in July 2013. Since the announcement of EOS 60D Canon released a new xxD model every three years. 2016 would be year of the EOS 80D. There have also been some suggestion about the announcement, nothing to take seriously. The EOS 80D will likely be announced in Summer 2016. However, given Canon recent and not foreseen announcements and technological innovations, I wouldn’t be too much surprised if the EOS 80D would be announced before the expected time-frame.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II lens coming? [CW2]

EF 70-200mm F/4

Latest rumor has it Canon may be working on a new EF 70-200mm L lens. The rumor says nothing about the aperture, it may be a f/2.8 or a f/4 lens. My guess is, if the rumor is reliable, it’s an EF 70-200mm f/4L II lens that could go to market next. The Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II was announced in 2010, the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L in 2006. Following a mere chronological order, then the EF 70-200mm f/4L II is the candidate. It’s also my tip.

Please note that this is a very vague rumor, referring to a product that will be announced somewhen in the future, which is in any case something that will happen, sooner or later. However, the rumor suggests the lens may be announced soon, possibly in November 2015.

Zeiss Otus 28mm f/1.4 lens coming [CW4]

Zeiss Otus 55mm F/1.4

Sony Alpha Rumors reports that a new Zeiss Otus 28mm f/1.4 lens is coming in mid October 2015. Please note that f/1.4 is our speculation, though a very likely one. All we know so far is that it will be a massive lens. Canon and Nikon mounts are expected to be announced. There have been some suggestions around the web the lens may be a 24mm. We are pretty sure it will be a 28mm.

We had a suggestion for a new Zeiss Otus lens in September, the Zeiss Milvus line-up was announced instead. However, the rumor wasn’t entirely wrong.

A new, entry-level EOS M body coming in October? [CW2]

Eos M3

This comes pretty as a surprise. Latest murmurings have it that Canon may announce a new EOS M body in October, an entry-level camera positioned below the EOS M3 (our review) and selling for $200 less.

While this is not entirely implausible, it’s a somewhat odd rumor. The EOS M3 was introduced to the European and Asian market in Spring 2015, and was just announced to the US market a few months ago. It would be an unusual move by Canon to announce another EOS M mirrorless camera in such a short time. However, anything is possible. So far there are no specs, and honestly I do not know what to think about this rumor.

Lots of Canon announcements coming in October (new EF-M lenses, PowerShot G16 & S120 replacements, more)? [CW4]

EOS M3

It appears October is the month when we will see some new Canon gear. What can we expect?

An ImagePROGRAF Pro-1000 17″ printer, anticipated by Canon’s Masaya Maeda in a recent interview. Most probably we will also see the PowerShot G16 and PowerShot S120 replacements. We do not have any specs so far. And it appears, and I am pretty sure about it, that we will eventually see the EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens for EOS M system. This lens leaked months ago, and according to information I got it should have a retractable design. It may well be the next kit lens for the EOS M3, which would also explain why we can buy the M3 only with the 18-55mm IS STM lens (in EU). It’s since some time that I have the feeling Canon is clearing stocks of the nowadays dated EF-M 18-55mm IS STM lens. The rumor suggests that also another EF-M lens will be announced, it could be a prime. It’s very likely the listed stuff will indeed be announced.

Canon Rumors, where the rumor leaked, speculates that there could be more to get announced: a DSLR announcement (though no major release), which may be the Rebel SL2, a new EF-S lens, and maybe some more EOS M related announcements.
