Canon planing to give up small sensor manufacturing? [CW2]

canon rumorscanon rumors

After the rumor of a few days ago, suggesting Canon may give up their sensor labs and factories, I got a new, yet similar rumor.

This time a slightly more plausible scenario is suggested. I would like to reproduce the original text:

There is an internal Canon strategy paper which says that under the current market trends the company ought to lower its total ownership cost of its sensor fabs by selling off its small-sensor manufacturing business, by small it means anything smaller than APS-C. Sensor manufacturing capability for sizes equal or larger than APS-C will be retained. There is no executive approval yet for this plan, but it’s likely to go ahead if the current market trends continue for a year or so.

Whatever you might think of this rumor, it is less unlikely than it might appear. If you have a look at Canon’s latest financial results, you’ll see what we all know since a while: smartphone photography is eating away the profits made with small sensor cameras (i.e. compact cameras). Hence, there might well be a scenario where Canon decides that manufacturing sensors smaller than APS-C has a total cost that’s too high. Canon is already featuring Sony sensors on some of their 1″ sensor Powershot cameras.

So, if the assumptions we made above have some plausibility, then Canon might give up producing small sensors, and start to purchase such sensors from Sony (given how well they perform). It will likely depend by how pragmatic Canon is as a company.

Our rumor about a Canon full-frame mirrorless camera gets another mention

canon rumorscanon rumors

Back in September I got a rumor suggesting Canon is actively working on a full-frame mirrorless camera. This very rumor today got another mention on the web.

I repost the rumor I got back in September:

I have been told (thanks) that Canon may indeed announce a full-frame mirrorless camera in 2016. I rate the rumor CW2 since I had so many misleading rumors about Canon’s mirrorless plans in the past. The source insisted to say that some sort of early prototype already exists, though it never came out of Canon’s labs. That’s to say that there are no test units out in the wild but just (if true) a prototype in a very early stage of development, still undergoing lab tests and development. It sounds at least plausible.

While I am sure Canon has the skills and the know-how to produce a full-frame mirrorless camera, I am pretty cautious with such rumors. A full-frame mirrorless camera is rumored since at least two years. The source promised to deliver some specs in the near future. We will see.

Unfortunately, we still do not have any specs. As I wrote back in September, the suggested mirrorless full-frame camera may likely be announced in 2016. Back then I rated the rumor CW2, today I tend more toward CW3.

The source who sent me the rumor in September promised to let me soon know more about Canon’s plans with a full-frame mirrorless camera. Stay tuned.

Canon testing third-party full-frame sensor for their DSLRs? [CW1]

Canon rumors

I got a tip from a new source, stating that Canon is actively testing a third-party full-frame sensor on a DSLR, along with a Canon sensor. If true, it could be a Sony sensor. This is the text of the mail I got:

I hear that Canon is considering to sell off its sensor fab and acquire from other manufacturers the sensors of its future cameras. Furthermore, I learn that an EOS camera currently in testing is being tested with two different sensors, one made by Canon and the other one made by another sensor manufacturer.

If it wasn’t for the “Canon is considering to sell off its sensor fab” I would have took this rumor more seriously. But so it is only a CW1 rumor to me. However, Canon did already feature third-party sensors on the Powershot cameras with 1″ sensor, and they always stated they would use the best sensor on the market, regardless of who manufactures it.

It is not the first time we are told Canon may abandon their sensor business and adopt third-party sensors (1 | 2 | 3). Nevertheless, I think this rumor is nothing but a hoax. What do you think?

Canon EOS-1D X Mark II to be announced in 2016?

EOS-1D X

After a lot of rumors suggesting the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II would be announced before end of 2015, now an announcement in 2016 is murmured.

Latest EOS-1D X rumor has it that we will see the Canon EOS-1D X not before April 2016. Until now April 2016 has always been traded as the announcement date for the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. Will the EOS 5D Mark IV announcement be postponed to Photokina 2016 (that’s in September 2016)? The EOS-1D X Mark II is still rumored to feature 4K video.

Take everything with a grain of salt, there are no really reliable Canon rumors around for the time being.

More Canon EOS M10 and EF-M 15-45mm IS STM images leaked (M10 has tiltable screen, lens is retractable)

EOS M10

More images of the upcoming Canon EOS M10 and EF-M 15-45mm IS STM lens have leaked at Digicame Info.

The EOS M10 has a tiltable screen, despite being incredibly small. Could the EOS M10 be the smallest APS-C mirrorless camera in the industry?

canon_ef-m15-45_b_001

The EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens has a very compact design, and it is retractable, as we anticipated here on Canon Watch. If you look at the pictures of the lens, you can see the switch to release the lens (same as on the [shoplink 14076]EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM[/shoplink]). You can also see that the 15-45mm IS STM has a plastic mount.

There are very few controls on the M10, so it will be operated mainly through the touch interface. While the EOS M10 is definitely an entry-level MILC, it seems to be an interesting piece of gear. Incredibly small and compact, with a tiltable screen, coming with a new super-compact kit lens. WiFi and NFC also seem to be on board. Not the enthusiast-oriented mirrorless camera we hope to see one day, but still: kudos Canon!

Announcement very soon. Stay tuned…
