A New Canon 50mm f/1.8 IS Coming Soon? (and some development announcement too?)

A rumor surfaced, and it has word that Canon could soon announce a 50mm f/1.8 IS lens going to replace the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens. The lens is said to be in line with the new(ly) EF 24mm,EF 28mm, and Ef 35mm IS lenses. Price should be higher than the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM(price & specs). THe lens is expected for 2014.

And there is more. Eventually, a new rumour came out saying that Canon could well make a development announcement before the end of 2013. However, it’s unclear what Canon may announce. The hypothesis are these: a pro camera body positioned above the EOS 5D Mark III (price & specs) and/or a new lens.

Everything is far from being sure. It’s true that there are upcoming trade shows (PhotoPlus in NYC, CES, CP+ in Jan, 2014, and NAB in April, 2014). Take all this with a grain of salt. There are no concrete signs that Canon may announce something soon, all past rumors and hints suggested that it’s over with new Canon gear for this year.

Want a Video Rig for the…. Canon EOS 7D Mark II?

EOS 7D Mark II

The Canon EOS 7D Mark II hasn’t been announced so far but you can already buy accessories that are optimised for the 7D Mark II. B&H has a video rig on sale that is touted as “Versatile Video Rig for Canon 7D Mark II“. Just a typo or does it mean the EOS 7D Mark II is close to be announced? :)

Latest rumors had it that there will not be an EOS 7D Mark II announcement this year. But then: who knows?

Update – What’s That? A “1” Series Camera Body with no Model Marking Pointing to a Canon Event in October?

Canon Event in October

Update: thanks to Keith I was able to get the (German) text of the flyer. It says: […] seien Sie live dabei. Translated it means: […] be there with us. Experience the Canon product highlights along with exciting stage performances and seminars around the topic of Professional Imaging. You should absolutely save one of these dates, each at 13-20pm. The flyer refers to several dates. Could this just be a Canon event for pros where Canon shows all their professional stuff?

Intriguing image spotted by Northlight Images. According to NL there are ‘professional’ Canon events in Germany in October, starting on the 12th in Berlin. Why intriguing? Because it shows an “1” series camera body without any model designation. However, checking Canon Germany’s homepage I could find only three events scheduled for October, none appears to be related to DSLRs, let alone to a camera announcement. The three events are:

  • Canon InMotion2013 @ Druck+Form in Sinsheim
  • Canon Business Lounge in Mülheim/Ruhr
  • Fotobookfestival in Kassel

So before you (and me) are hoping to see a big announcement it is better to slow down expectations. :)

More Canon Medium Format Tidbits

Canon Medium Format
Canon Medium Format Mock-Up

Another rumor concerning Canon’s supposedly upcoming MF system surfaced. The MF system will be part of the EOS family, Canon wants to do that because they want to be recognized as a brand that covers the broad market. How to position Canon in the global market thru the MF system is considered a “key aspect”.

Moreover, the medium format EF lenses are supposed to work on other EOS systems (full-frame) by the means of an adapter (same as happens with the EF-M adapter for the EOS M system (price & specs)). Development announcement is expected for Photokina 2014.

I am still rather sceptical about this rumor. How many medium format cameras are sold around the world? Is it really worth to make such a (strategic) investment for what at the end is a niche market? Will this really be profitable? What do you think?

Sony’s Upcoming Full-Frame NEX Camera is Set to Compete With the Canon EOS 6D Price

Sony’s RX1 dissected

Our friends at sonyalpharumors posted a rumor heard from a trusted source saying that Sony will challenge Canon (and Nikon) on the full-frame front thru the pricing of their upcoming NEX full-frame cameras. It appears that Sony will soon announce two mirrorless full-frame sensor cameras, one of them (the cheaper one) is set to compete with Canon’s EOS 6D price tag. That’s to say that the full-frame Sony NEX will have a price tag very similar to the EOS 6D () and the Nikon D600. I think these are good news: more competition will possibly lower the price of the 6D even more. The full-frame NEX that’s going to challenge Canon and Nikon could have a design similar to the Sony RX1 (see pic above).

New Canon Big Megapixel and Medium Format Rumors

Canon Big Megapixel

After a while a new rumor about the mighty Canon big megapixel camera. Rumors say that the 44.7MP camera is undergoing field testing. However, it appears that when used in 4k mode the batteries are draining way to fast. Canon is therefore still working on the sensor development and the software of the camera. The big MP camera could be announced (development announcement) late 2013 or beginning of 2014.

Another rumor concerns Canon’s plans to step into the medium format segment, and it appears Canon is serious about that. Canon could announce a medium format camera at next Photokina, availability will hardly be before 2015. Canon’s medium format strategy could imply an alliance with an already consolidated manufacturer, a joint venture so to speak.

Take all this with a grain of salt. There have been other big megapixel rumors in the past and so far they were either wrong (concerning the announcement) or very vague (concerning features). The MF rumor is pretty recent, and it sounds plausible that Canon would like to step into this market.
