Canon EOS 90D and EOS 7D Mark II Last Of Their Kind?

Is the Canon EOS 90D the last iteration of the highly popular EOS xxD lineup? We got a tip pointing in that direction.

Canon will not replace the EOS 90D with a new model, we have been told. Instead, Canon will release a new APS-C mirrorless camera as replacement. The source didn’t tell if this new camera will be an EOS M or an EOS R model.

Not the first time a rumor suggests the end of the long running EOS xxD lineup. In the past we had a rumor suggesting there would be no EOS 90D and a MILC instead. It didn’t happen.

And the Canon EOS 7D series? Rumors suggests Canon might see a mirrorless future here too. This could get interesting since the EOS 7D lineup was always intended for the pros who wanted or needed an APS-C body (for instance to get more reach with their telephoto lenses). Canon has to release a truly amazing APS-C mirrorless camera to replace the EOS 7D Mark II (and the EOS 90D too, for that matter).

A recent rumor suggests an EOS R camera with APS-C sensor might be on Canon’s radar. Rumors that Canon might release an APS-C camera in the EOS R lineup are surfacing since a while. 2021 might be the year for such a camera.

I’m particularly fond of the Canon EOS xxD lineup. The EOS 40D was my first “serious” DSLR. A great camera, I still have it. Then came the EOS 70D and later the EOS 80D, the latter being my favorite all-round DSLR.

Btw, how would the next iteration of the xxD lineup be named, Canon EOS 95D? EOS 100D is already taken (the Rebel SL1 is named EOS 100D in Europe).

The Canon EOS M50 Mark II Might Get Announced In 2020

Here is some murmurings about the replacement for the highly popular EOS M50, the Canon EOS M50 Mark II.

The Canon EOS M50 Mark II could be announced before Christmas 2020. The weird thing: according to the source the EOS M50 replacement might first ship in Japan, and only in 2021 in the rest of the world.

The Canon EOS M50 is the company’s top selling mirrorless camera and it is to expect that Canon will follow up with a worthy replacement. The EOS M50 Mark II won’t be Canon’s APS-C mirrorless flagship but I think it’s safe to assume that Canon will announce a feature-rich successor, and it will be another best seller.

What To Expect Next From Canon?

Time to sum up the speculations about what we might see next from Canon.

What’s happening on the RF lenses front? These lenses are likely to be announced next from Canon:

  • RF 50mm f/1.8 IS STM
  • RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM
  • RF 18-45mm IS STM
  • RF 100-400mm IS USM
  • RF 24mm f/2.8 IS STM Macro

Note that only the first two lenses (50mm and 70-200mm) are expected to be released this year. The remaining three lenses are most likely a 2021 announcement. Moreover, there might be more L-tier lenses on Canon’s release radar.

Canon might also release one more adapter for the RF mount. No reliable intel here so far.

Will there be more EOS R cameras to get released in 2020? We think that’s unlikely yet not impossible. Don’t put your stakes to high, though.

Will Canon release a new EOS M camera? A new flagship EOS M camera might indeed be announced in 2020. Here too we don’t yet have any reliable information.

And EF-M lenses? Canon might announce one or two new EF-M lenses for the EOS M system.

Will there be a Canon EOS 5D Mark V? Well, that’s a tough question and honestly we have no clue so far. Is there space for a 5D Mark V after the EOS R5? You tell me.
